The Eraser

An ontological predator dossier for Cthulhu Eternal

The video showed the security officer following someone the camera had never once recorded. For nine seconds after that, the whole world had exactly one surviving reason left to include Dr. Mara Venn, and it was a phone call from a child asking why her middle name was Mara.

Case E-21: The employee in the supply closet

Dr. Mara Venn arrived at the Halberg Institute carrying eleven years of staff identification cards, tax forms, conference photographs, and private correspondence. She said she had run its low-temperature laboratory since 2015.

The laboratory existed. Its published papers existed. Every paper thanked an unnamed supervisor for correcting the same uncommon experimental error. Payroll carried a recurring monthly discrepancy that came to exactly Venn’s salary. The staff photographs left an undamaged gap between the same two researchers.

Nobody at Halberg remembered her.

Venn unlocked the laboratory, entered valid credentials into three obsolete systems, and identified a helium leak by ear. Human Resources gave her a temporary office while the institute looked into it. The room had been a supply closet for eleven years.

On the second day the investigators found her doctoral thesis. Its author field was blank. The acknowledgments thanked the author’s mother, who remembered having one child rather than two.

On the third day Venn’s fingerprints stopped matching the prints on her identification cards. Her childhood vaccination scars vanished while she was being examined. A dental crown sat in her mouth over a tooth that showed no history of drilling.

On the fourth day a security officer watched Venn walk down an empty corridor. He looked away to answer his radio. When he looked back the corridor was still empty, and he could not say why he had drawn his weapon.

The video showed him following someone the camera had never recorded.

At 19:12 Venn took a call from investigator Noel Park’s daughter. The girl asked why her middle name was Mara.

Every monitor in the institute showed a narrow black figure bending toward the telephone.

For nine seconds, the world had one surviving reason to include Dr. Mara Venn.

Classification

An Eraser is an angular predator that consumes the redundant physical records supporting a macroscopic organism’s history. Its prey usually survives until late in the feeding. Records fail first, then relationships, then bodily continuity, then immediate observability, and only at the end the reliable connection between one moment of the victim’s life and the next.

The creature feeds on existential redundancy: all the independent ways a life has pressed itself into the world.

That is what sets it apart from the other information-feeding organisms in the Tindalosian ecology.

Entity or processPrincipal targetTypical result
The UnrememberingOne observer’s access to an encounterThe witness cannot retrieve the memory
Tindalosian CleanerCorrelations joining records of an angular eventFacts survive while their shared history becomes unrecoverable
Palimpsest HoundReconstruction from surviving consequencesAn erased encounter regains coherent anatomy
EraserRecords supporting an organism’s entire worldlineThe environment becomes able to account for itself without the victim

An Eraser may swallow evidence of a Hound encounter along with the rest of a person, but that is incidental. Its feeding starts before the encounter when it has to, and it follows the prey’s history back through childhood, ancestry, institutions, injuries, friendships, and material consequences.

Why a person has a public existence

Every macroscopic object interacts endlessly with its surroundings. Photons scatter off it. Air molecules collide with it. Floors carry its weight. Other nervous systems encode their encounters with it. Cameras, databases, handwriting, scars, antibodies, habits, and rearranged furniture each hold a different piece of its history.

This abundance matters because observers rarely inspect an object directly. They pull information from environmental fragments instead. You see another person by catching photons that have just bounced off them. An investigator learns that someone attended a meeting through memories, minutes, access logs, fingerprints, and the consequences of decisions made in the room.

Quantum Darwinism studies how information about selected states of a quantum system can spread into many environmental fragments at once. Multiple observers then sample different fragments and reach agreement without touching the original system. This redundant encoding is part of how stable, apparently objective classical properties emerge from quantum interactions.

Let (S) denote a system and let (F) be a fragment of its environment. Their quantum mutual information is

I(S:F) = H(S)+H(F)-H(SF)

where (H) is the von Neumann entropy. The mutual information measures the total correlations between the system and that environmental fragment.

Suppose almost all of the classically accessible information about a selected property of (S) can be recovered from a fraction (f_\delta) of the environment, with deficit (\delta). A common measure of redundancy is

R_\delta = \frac{1}{f_\delta}

A large (R_\delta) means many disjoint environmental fragments each carry nearly complete information about the same property. An illuminated macroscopic object can leave a staggering number of records in scattered photons. The environment has effectively broadcast where the object was.

A human life carries redundancy far more elaborate than that. Records encode different properties at different times, and many records depend causally on earlier records. The intuition still holds either way: public facts become robust once many physically distinct systems agree about them.

Histories that cease to interfere

The decoherent-histories approach describes a possible history as a sequence of alternatives represented by projection operators at successive times. For a history

\alpha=(\alpha_1,\alpha_2,\ldots,\alpha_n)

one may write a class operator schematically as

C_\alpha = P_{\alpha_n}(t_n) P_{\alpha_{n-1}}(t_{n-1}) \cdots P_{\alpha_1}(t_1)

Given an initial density operator (\rho), the decoherence functional is

D(\alpha,\beta) = \mathrm{Tr} \left( C_\alpha\rho C_\beta^\dagger \right)

The diagonal term supplies the candidate probability for a history:

p(\alpha)=D(\alpha,\alpha)

Ordinary probability rules apply to a suitably decoherent set once the off-diagonal terms are negligible:

D(\alpha,\beta)\approx0 \qquad \text{for }\alpha\ne\beta

Put plainly, macroscopically different histories stop producing observable interference once their alternatives have become strongly entangled with distinct environmental states. A history in which Mara attended a conference and a history in which she did not pick up different photographs, memories, air currents, electronic records, and downstream decisions. Those environmental states are effectively orthogonal, and the alternatives then behave like exclusive classical possibilities.

Decoherence does not hand you one universally privileged narrative for every event. A consistent set depends on its coarse graining, and incompatible consistent descriptions can coexist. What it does explain is why arbitrary superpositions of familiar macroscopic histories are simply unavailable to ordinary observation.

Records and retrodiction

A present record can correlate with a past alternative. If a record projector (R_\alpha) is strongly associated with history (\alpha), finding that record lets you retrodict what happened.

The practical version needs no exotic interpretation. A scar supports a history of injury. A degree supports a history of study. A child supports a complicated history of ancestry and caregiving. None of them gives you a complete biography. Together they constrain which pasts could plausibly produce the present.

The Eraser weakens these constraints in a characteristic order. It eats the isolated records first, then the independent corroboration, then the consequences that would require larger and larger portions of the world to be different.

Its prey does not become forgotten all at once. The set of viable explanations for the present just keeps widening, until a history with no prey in it fits the remaining evidence nearly as well as the history everyone remembers living through.

Why macroscopic erasure is physically monstrous

An ordinary attempt to erase a person from history only makes more records. Burning photographs produces ash, heat, combustion products, purchases, witness memories, and unexplained absences. Editing a database changes logs and backups. Murder produces a body, disturbed matter, biological traces, frightened people, and a causal trail.

Information has physical carriers. A logically irreversible reset also carries a thermodynamic cost. In the ideal limit, erasing one unbiased bit while coupled to a thermal reservoir at temperature (T) dissipates at least

Q_{\min}=k_B T\ln2

Landauer’s principle is about a logical operation that maps distinguishable inputs to one standard output. It does not claim that deleting a computer file destroys its microscopic information. Most everyday deletion leaves recoverable states behind, or shifts the distinguishing information somewhere else.

Fully reversing a macroscopic history would demand control over an absurd number of correlated degrees of freedom. Photons have escaped. Molecules have mixed. People have changed how they behave, and those changes produced further changes. Unitary quantum mechanics does not hand anyone a practical universal Delete key.

The precision and the entropy management this would take put the Eraser well beyond known physics.

Quantum erasers do not rewrite yesterday

The creature’s field name invites a common mistake.

Quantum-eraser experiments manipulate which-path information in controlled interference systems. Interference can be recovered in selected correlations once the alternatives become indistinguishable in the relevant measurement basis. Delayed-choice versions can make the experimental ordering sound retrocausal, but they never permit controllable signals into the past, never alter an already observed macroscopic event, and never make laboratory personnel disappear from payroll.

The real lesson is narrow and useful: interference depends on whether physical information distinguishes the alternatives, including information stored in correlated systems.

Everything to do with removing a human worldline belongs to the fiction.

The Tindalosian axiom

An Eraser can couple to records distributed along a curved-space history, transfer their distinguishing information into angular degrees of freedom, and export the associated entropy outside the victim’s ordinary causal future.

Its feeding changes the decoherence functional tied to a carefully chosen coarse graining. Let (H_V) describe a history containing the victim and (H_0) a compatible history without them. The Eraser drives

\left|D(H_V,H_0)\right|

away from its effectively decohered value while removing the accessible records that distinguish the two histories.

The equation is schematic. Known physics offers no operation that makes two human-scale histories recohere after years of uncontrolled environmental interaction. The Eraser pulls off the impossible by treating angular time as an information and entropy sink.

Even inside the fiction the process stays finite and local enough for play. An Eraser cannot casually rewrite the universe. It attacks one coarse-grained proposition:

Did this organism persist through this interval of curved time?

The creature removes evidence relevant to that proposition. It favors records with low independence and consequences that can be reassigned without forcing large contradictions. A heavily entangled life is difficult prey. An isolated survivor who has already destroyed their own records is easy.

Feeding progression

Peripheral records

Loose photographs, neglected accounts, old correspondence, and memories held by distant acquaintances fail first. The physical carrier usually survives in some altered or ambiguous form. A photograph keeps a fitting background. A letter loses a name but keeps its grammatical sentences. An account balance turns into a correction.

Provenance

Records connected through one institution or index pick up substitute explanations. Publications become group efforts. Rent payments belong to a former tenant. A personal telephone number now looks like it was always a service line.

Relationships

Shared episodes become hard to retrieve. Affection, resentment, and learned habits can persist with no identified source. A spouse wakes grieving with no concept of a bereavement. A dog waits at a door that belongs to no recognized person.

Somatic history

The body loses the evidence of its own development. Scars disappear. Antibodies have no plausible exposure behind them. Dental work sits over anatomy that never justified it. Genetic tests return incompatible ancestry across repeated samples.

Immediate objectivity

Different observers stop agreeing about the victim’s present state. Cameras leave them out. Witnesses lose the thread whenever they look away. Pressure sensors register weight with no stable source. A conversation continues across sentences nobody can reconstruct.

Temporal succession

The link between successive moments weakens. The victim changes rooms without crossing the corridor between them. Injuries show up before the accident that could cause them. Their inner experience stays continuous while the outside records fill with longer and longer gaps.

Historical ambiguity

The present now admits a coarse-grained history in which the victim never occupied it at all. The victim may still appear wherever a surviving record demands their presence. Between those anchors, their projected body becomes optional.

Appearance

No two sightings pin down a complete anatomy. Witnesses report coordinated absences around a narrow moving volume:

  • Snow falls across a yard except along a path with no footprints.
  • A crowded room keeps space around an unoccupied chair.
  • Reflections hold every object except the cause of one moving shadow.
  • Speech loses its nouns as something nears the speaker.
  • Dust rises from floorboards without keeping the shape that disturbed it.
  • A video runs continuous timestamps across several seconds nobody can describe.

Up close, overlapping versions of the environment become visible. The victim stands in some of them and is absent from others. The Eraser occupies the boundary where those accounts almost agree.

Recovered images suggest a tall bilateral organism with a featureless wedge for a head and many fine limbs reaching backward into earlier states of the room. Each limb ends at a physical record: a camera, a scar, a witness, a document, a changed object. The projected body grows clearer as the prey grows less so.

Blue fluid gathers in objects whose provenance has just been removed. Analysis finds polymers, proteins, and isotopic ratios compatible with several mutually exclusive manufacturing histories at once.

Ecology

Erasers seem to be predators or large scavengers of time-thick organisms. Their preferred prey has a long, redundant, causally productive history. Human civilization manufactures unusually rich individuals through identity documents, mass photography, networked communication, medicine, education, property, and social interdependence.

They rarely attack at random. Early victims tend to share one or more traits:

  • Survived an angular manifestation.
  • Destroyed personal records to reduce Scent.
  • Lived under several names or outside formal institutions.
  • Lost family and community ties.
  • Underwent the Unremembering.
  • Became the sole surviving witness to an erased event.

The prey’s own earlier effort to become untraceable hands the Eraser a partly prepared meal.

Hounds respond to all this inconsistently. Erasure can weaken the records localizing a Hound, which helps the injured animal, and the complete removal of an observer also destroys the strongest tether. Yet an Eraser feeding too close to an active manifestation may consume records the Hound is trying to sever in a specific order, which sets off violent interference between both angular bodies.

Cleaners often trail Erasers and graze on orphaned correlations. Palimpsest Hounds turn up near failed erasures, because the pattern of missing evidence can itself become a recoverable record. The Last Witness, if the reports are accurate, is an organism or a state that forms when one surviving observer carries more historical weight than an entire damaged environment.

Historical Support

For play, represent the victim’s public existence with six Historical Supports. Each Support is a domain holding independent physical evidence that the victim persisted through time.

SupportExamples
MemoryFriends, enemies, family, colleagues, eyewitnesses
RecordWriting, photographs, recordings, databases, correspondence
MatterRooms altered, possessions worn, tools made, soil disturbed
BodyDevelopment, scars, immunity, genetics, procedural memory
InstitutionEmployment, education, citizenship, property, finance
ConsequencePeople, discoveries, promises, rescues, injuries, and decisions the victim caused

Write one concrete anchor under each category. “Records” is too broad. “The sealed paper personnel file in the East Annex” is playable.

Several copies descended from one source count as one Support. Independence matters more than volume. A thousand synchronized cloud backups can fail as one record family. A handwritten diary, an estranged witness, and a scar may each survive a separate attack, because they encode the history through different physical pathways.

Support loss

At the end of a feeding interval, the Eraser targets one known Support. The Handler names the observable degradation before resolving the attack. The victim or an investigator may oppose it with a relevant skill, some preparation, or a power as described below.

Supports remainingGame effect
6Peripheral discrepancies; no mechanical penalty
5Bureaucratic and relationship tests concerning the victim suffer a 20% penalty
4The victim loses access to one Bond or institutional resource until the Support is restored
3Each period spent outside direct observation costs 1 WP; witnesses test SAN 0/1D4 after noticing a discontinuity
2Observers test Alertness to keep hold of the victim when they leave immediate focus
1Each unobserved feeding interval costs the victim 1D6 WP and 1D4 HP
0The Eraser may attempt Historical Excision

Lost Supports should change the shared fiction. A Bond drops out of other characters’ recollection. A qualification stops opening doors. A treasured object shows no sign of its owner. Reduce the track to bare penalties and you waste the premise.

Creating support

A deliberate record becomes a Support only when it is physically independent, specific enough to distinguish the victim’s history, and protected from the same failure mode as the existing anchors.

One successful relevant test can create or harden an anchor. Try Art for a handmade portrait, Bureaucracy for distributed institutional attestations, Computer Science for independently administered records, Forensics for preserved biological traces, History for established provenance, Psychotherapy for structured witness recall, Science for physical signatures, or SIGINT for externally timestamped communications.

A failed test produces a usable clue but exposes its dependence on another anchor. A fumble hands the Eraser a route into the source record.

Creation is never free. New records may raise the victim’s Scent. When a Support explicitly holds information about a Hound encounter, increase the relevant Scent Track by 1 once the record picks up independent corroboration.

Attacks

Record incision 60%, damage 1D8. Fine limbs cut tissue and nearby record carriers along matching lines. On a critical success, the Eraser learns one anchor connected to the victim.

Consume Support 70%, opposed by victim’s POW, costs 3 WP. The Eraser attacks one identified Historical Support. Success removes it at the end of the current scene. The victim loses 1D4 WP, and anyone who recognizes the loss tests SAN according to the stage. The Support stays recoverable inside the Eraser until it performs Angular Export.

Unwitnessed Reduction 60%, opposed by POW, costs 4 WP. Available with 3 or fewer Supports. The Eraser targets a victim outside every ally’s direct observation. Success inflicts 1D6 WP damage and moves the victim to another spot within 20 meters/yards without crossing the path between. At 1 Support, the attack also inflicts 1D4 HP.

Historical Excision 50%, opposed by POW, costs 8 WP. Available at 0 Supports. Success removes the victim from ordinary observation. Their body persists only beside unresolved contradictions or records held inside the Eraser. Failure leaves the victim present at 0 Supports and makes the Eraser vulnerable to all attacks until the end of the next turn. A critical failure restores one recoverable Support.

Historical Excision does not give the Handler permission to remove a character without warning. The track, the threatened anchors, and the final attack all stay visible parts of play.

Powers

Peripheral Appetite: The Eraser senses the least independent record of its current prey. It knows the physical direction of that record and which other anchors lean on it. It gains no general knowledge of protected records with genuinely separate causal origins.

Record Transit: After consuming or touching a Support, the Eraser may spend 2 WP to emerge beside another physical carrier in the same record family. It crosses the historical relation, not the intervening space. Severing or falsifying that relationship blocks the movement only when the change survives independent verification.

Explanatory Substitution: Whenever a Support is exported, nearby records take on the simplest available account that leaves the victim out. The power can reassign authorship, ownership, causation, or identity within plausible limits. It cannot create a living replacement person or erase a major consequence that still has independent support.

Attentional Lacuna: With 3 or fewer Supports, observers must succeed at Alertness to notice the Eraser before it attacks. Cameras and sensors can observe it, but each independent device needs its own test or a calibrated discriminating protocol. Failure records a continuous environment with no creature in it.

Digestive Counterhistory: Consumed but unexported Supports stay encoded as alternative environmental states within the Eraser. Surgery, Science, Unnatural, or a suitable technical test can extract one Support from an immobilized specimen. Failure costs the operator 1D4 WP and exposes one of their own anchors. Killing the Eraser releases every unexported Support at once.

Angular Export: At the end of a scene, the Eraser may export one consumed Support and regain 1D6 WP. Export produces heat, broadband noise, contradictory timestamps, and blue residue. Recovery afterward requires reconstruction from an independent surviving consequence.

Predatory Recoherence: While the victim has 3 or fewer Supports, the Eraser is RESILIENT against Lethal Damage and may use the victim’s failed observation tests as cover. Restoring a fourth Support or performing Forced Record stabilizes its projected anatomy and ends this protection.

Countermeasures

Audit independence

Map each anchor, its physical carrier, its origin, and its dependencies. Copies produced by one service, person, camera, or database may fail together. A successful Bureaucracy, Computer Science, Forensics, History, Science, Search, or SIGINT test exposes one hidden common dependency.

Distribute heterogeneous records

Place specific records with custodians who share no infrastructure, location, or access procedure. Combine biological evidence, analog writing, human testimony, cryptographic commitments, and material consequences.

Cryptography can prove that a commitment existed before an attack and later confirm matching content. It cannot preserve content nobody retains, and it cannot prove the claimed interpretation was correct. Treat it as one anchor, not as magical immunity.

Maintain witness continuity

Keep at least two observers on the victim through physically independent channels. Rotate them with overlapping handoffs. Each handoff needs an Alertness or relevant professional test once the victim has 2 or fewer Supports. Failure opens an unobserved interval.

Force a record

Investigators can deliberately couple the Eraser to several independent detectors while confronting it with a contradiction that requires the victim.

Complete three successful tests from at least three physical categories: human observation, optical or electromagnetic sensing, mechanical interaction, biological sampling, or an externally administered record. All channels have to agree during one turn.

Forced Record restores one Support, costs the Eraser 1D6 HP with Armor ignored, and makes it NORMAL against Lethal Damage for the scene. Failure lets the Eraser attack the weakest channel. A fumble exposes the operator as new potential prey.

Preserve consequences

The strongest anchors are changes that cannot be reassigned cheaply. A person the victim rescued, a child, a transplanted organ, a unique discovery, a building they designed, or a community organized around their actions may each require many other histories to change first.

These anchors carry moral weight. Treating another person as evidence is likely to damage the relationship even when the physics works.

Create underdetermination

Several authentic histories can jam the Eraser when each keeps independent support and all of them require the victim. Multiple legal identities, compartmented biographies, or incompatible professional records can split its feeding routes. Cheap lies collapse under comparison and only guide the creature toward the authentic source.

Practices that make everything worse

  • Destroying records to hide from the Eraser removes your food only after removing your protection.
  • Uploading thousands of copies to one provider creates volume with no independence.
  • Isolating the victim stops new contamination while also killing witness continuity.
  • Assigning one archivist to understand every anchor creates a single human index.
  • Using only cameras exposes the whole defense to one measurement family and one infrastructure.
  • Publishing the Hound encounter may stabilize the victim while raising Scent catastrophically.
  • Killing the Eraser after long feeding can dump years of records back in one uncontrolled burst.
  • Inventing a replacement biography just gives Explanatory Substitution better material.

Running the Eraser fairly

  • Define all six anchors before the first Support loss.
  • Show peripheral failures before applying any mechanical penalty.
  • Name the threatened Support and allow intervention.
  • Track which consumed Supports are still recoverable inside the creature.
  • Make common dependencies discoverable through competent investigation.
  • Let independent records work even when their form is inconvenient to the planned scene.
  • Tie every penalty to a concrete loss in the fiction.
  • Preserve a final contradiction at 0 Supports when the players have protected one successfully.
  • Apply Scent increases when the defenses encode the Hound encounter.
  • Keep major downstream people fully human. A child or spouse is neither inventory nor bonus armor.

The investigation should force hard archival and social choices. Arbitrary retroactive deletion turns those choices into decoration.

Compact incident: The Halberg contradiction

Mara Venn begins with two surviving Supports.

Her Body Support is a distinctive tremor from a cryogenic accident that Noel Park witnessed. Her Consequence Support is Park’s daughter, whom Venn delivered during an emergency and after whom the child was named. Every other category has already failed.

The Eraser has ingested the institute’s employment and publication history. Those Supports are still visible as moving text and employee photographs beneath its thorax. It will export Institution at the end of the next scene.

Investigators can preserve Venn by separating Park’s testimony from the medical and family records, creating independent commitments, and forcing the institute to observe Venn through human, mechanical, and biological channels. Do that and they restore enough Support to stabilize the Eraser’s anatomy.

The defensive record will also prove that Venn disappeared while investigating angular organisms. Her dormant Hound correlation climbs from Scent 1 to Scent 3.

Conceal the encounter and the Eraser stays difficult to fight. Document it and a Hound begins localizing in the institute’s newly reopened low-temperature laboratory.

The building has many corners and excellent cameras.

Scenario hooks

The unperson pension

A government pension system pays benefits to an account with no beneficiary. Every attempt to close it removes a retired employee from one agency photograph. The payments are the last institutional Support for an intelligence analyst erased during a classified Hound operation.

Negative genealogy

A commercial ancestry service finds a genetic contributor shared by three hundred customers but present in no family tree, census, burial record, or biological sample. Contacting the customers gives the Eraser three hundred new routes into the missing ancestor’s consequences.

The empty electorate

An election margin exceeds the number of recorded voters. The ballots are authentic, the signatures agree, and the winning policy changed thousands of lives. The people who cast the excess votes are losing immediate objectivity together.

The sole author

A famous theorem has no discoverer. Mathematicians retain the proof, published critiques cite blank pages, and one elderly professor remembers a student whose insight redirected the field. The theorem is too consequential for Explanatory Substitution to absorb cleanly.

Witness protection

A protected witness chose isolation, identity destruction, and severed family contact to escape a Hound. The measures worked. An Eraser has found the thinnest human worldline in the city.

Field classification

THE ERASER Type: Angular predator of macroscopic historical redundancy Habitat: Archives, institutions, isolated communities, identity systems, ruins, and the lives of witnesses who have destroyed their records Diet: Independent physical evidence supporting the persistence of an organism through curved time Behavior: Removes peripheral records, consumes corroboration, substitutes victim-free explanations, and attempts historical excision Movement principle: Transit between carriers belonging to one record family Primary sign: Several intact systems agree on an absence they cannot explain Containment principle: Preserve heterogeneous independent records, maintain overlapping observation, and force the creature into one redundantly recorded projection Critical hazard: Every defense that records the victim’s angular encounter may increase Hound Scent

Where the science ends

Decoherence, environmental entanglement, redundant records, quantum mutual information, Quantum Darwinism, consistent histories, the decoherence functional, record projectors, Landauer’s principle, and quantum-eraser experiments all belong to real physics.

None of those ideas implies that existence depends on paperwork or human memory. A poorly documented person remains fully physical. Loss of evidence creates epistemic uncertainty for investigators; it does not ordinarily make macroscopic alternatives interfere or weaken a body.

Known physics offers no feasible operation that collects the environmental record of a human life, reverses years of uncontrolled interactions, exports the entropy, and slides a person out from between compatible coarse-grained histories.

The Tindalosian axiom supplies the coupling across angular time, the selective removal of which-history information, the entropy sink, and the macroscopic recoherence. Historical Support and the creature’s powers are the gameable consequences of that invention.

Sources and further reading

Final record

Three months after the Halberg incident, Noel Park found a photograph in his daughter’s school file.

It showed Mara Venn holding the newborn child while Park slept in a chair beside them. Venn’s face was clear. The hospital clock, the patient board, and the window reflection all agreed on the date and time.

Park turned the photograph over. In Venn’s handwriting, it read:

If this is the last place I exist, please do not let it see you reading.

The chair opposite Park creaked under the weight of an explanation the room no longer needed.
