The Ecology of Tindalos

Mesocosm report, ecological synthesis, and Cthulhu Eternal operation kit

For nineteen days the captive organisms kept one another alive. The team had built the chamber expecting to watch one thing eat another. What they got was grazing, succession, wound cleaning, habitat construction, and reproduction. Then, on day thirty, every organism in the tank reacted at once to something outside the measured state space, and all of them began to flee.

Interim report from Mesocosm Thirty

The chamber held a Probability Reef no larger than a conference table.

Its visible structure changed with the instrument used to examine it. Under coherent illumination, it resembled sheets of mica intersecting at wet black seams. Thermal cameras showed an irregular cavity colder than the surrounding laboratory. Gravimeters registered several overlapping distributions of the chamber’s own mass. None of these measurements described the Reef completely. Together, they maintained a region in which incompatible environmental histories stayed locally available.

Vacuum Grazers appeared on the fourth day. They gathered along the chamber’s suppressed electromagnetic modes and left moving gaps in the Casimir-force map. Corner Brood occupied defects in the containment frame. A Tindalosian Cleaner emerged from a residue trap and began consuming the correlations between the Reef and its monitoring equipment.

The Hound arrived on day eleven.

It did not pursue the staff. It placed a structure resembling a jaw against one of the Reef’s densest junctions and removed a closed loop of mutually supporting records. The Reef expanded into the released alternatives. Vacuum Grazers entered the new boundary modes. Corner Brood opened fresh vertices behind them. The Cleaner passed again and again through the Hound’s projected thorax, removing the blue membranes that formed wherever the animal’s body touched the chamber’s curved geometry.

For nineteen days, the organisms maintained one another.

The research team had expected predation. What they observed was grazing, succession, wound cleaning, habitat construction, and reproduction.

At 02:14 on day thirty, every organism reacted to an event outside the measured state space.

The Grazers abandoned the active field modes. Corner Brood withdrew into vertices too narrow to image. Developing Spores terminated their curved-space bodies and distributed their remaining structure across three disconnected archives. The Cleaner entered the Hound through an open seam beneath its forelimb and did not come back out.

The Reef contracted around histories in which the chamber had never been built.

The Hound struck the observation window until its facial structures came apart. It then followed the gaze of Senior Technician Vale into the control room. Vale died beside a wall display with no physical corner larger than two millimeters.

Instrumentation recorded nothing entering Mesocosm Thirty.

It recorded a moving region from which the entire captive ecology was fleeing.

We have sampled a wreckage field

The known Tindalosian catalogue is dominated by organisms that cross into curved spacetime, survive forced localization, exploit the damage that crossing causes, or grow from human attempts to document it.

This is a severe sampling bias.

Marine biologists would not reconstruct an ocean solely from the animals stranded on beaches. Paleontologists do not assume that the organisms most likely to fossilize were the most abundant organisms in their communities. Ecologists separate the processes that generate a living assemblage from the processes that determine which members an observer detects.

Human observers have mostly encountered:

  • Large organisms capable of forcing a projection into ordinary spacetime.
  • Small organisms carried along with those projections.
  • Scavengers drawn to projection injuries.
  • Parasites able to use human records, instruments, or causal systems as hosts.
  • Reproductive stages activated by our models.
  • Pathological forms manufactured by incompatible observation.

The bestiary that results resembles a pathology department more than a census.

Hounds sit at the center of it because they are conspicuous, durable, and strongly coupled to observation. Frequency in human reports is no evidence that they dominate their native ecosystem.

A niche with unfamiliar axes

G. Evelyn Hutchinson described an ecological niche as a region in an abstract multidimensional space. Each axis represents an environmental condition or resource that affects whether a population can persist. Temperature, moisture, prey size, nesting sites, salinity, and season can all become niche dimensions.

Angular ecology needs different axes, though the basic idea survives.

Let the local resource state be represented schematically by

\mathbf{R}(x)= \left( F, C_{\mathcal B}, I_{\mathrm{red}}, G_{\partial}, A \right)

The components are:

  • F: available nonequilibrium free energy.
  • C_{\mathcal B}: coherence relative to a physically selected basis \mathcal B.
  • I_{\mathrm{red}}: redundant information distributed among environmental records.
  • G_{\partial}: density and connectivity of usable boundaries, vertices, horizons, and metastable interfaces.
  • A: accessibility across relevant observers, histories, and causal channels.

This vector is an accounting device. Real quantum theory does not describe ecosystems living in probability, and information is not interchangeable with calories. The components name physically different resources. A process able to consume one may be unable to use the others.

An organism’s fundamental niche is the region of this resource space in which its organization can persist. Its realized niche is smaller, because other organisms consume, modify, obstruct, or create those resources.

Distance inside that space need not match distance in a room. Two physical corners may be adjacent for Corner Brood because they support coupled boundary modes. Two years may be adjacent for a Worldline Leech because both lie on trajectories reaching the same terminal condition. A human memory and a server backup may occupy the same feeding patch for a Cleaner because they carry redundant records of one event.

Angular ecology remains ecology, because survival still depends on resources, tolerances, competition, reproduction, waste, and death.

The resource economy

Free energy

For a system with state \rho, Hamiltonian H, and temperature T, ordinary nonequilibrium free energy can be written

F(\rho)=\mathrm{Tr}(\rho H)-kT S(\rho)

where S(\rho) is the von Neumann entropy. Relative to a thermal state \gamma, the excess free energy is related to quantum relative entropy:

F(\rho)-F(\gamma)=kT D(\rho\Vert\gamma)

This places a real thermodynamic limit on state transformations. Microscopic quantum thermodynamics can require a family of monotones rather than one average free-energy inequality, especially when fluctuations and exact transformations matter.

Vacuum Grazers exploit changes in available field modes and boundary conditions. Redshift Carrion exploit the disequilibrium around lapse and projection injuries. Neither extracts unlimited energy from nothing. Their feeding changes a constrained physical system and exports entropy elsewhere.

Coherence

Quantum coherence is basis dependent. A state can carry off-diagonal terms relative to one basis and be diagonal in another. Coherence also obeys restrictions separate from free-energy accounting. A system may hold energy it cannot convert into work through an allowed operation, because the required phase reference or symmetry-breaking resource is absent.

The Decoherent and the Unmeasured occupy this part of the ecology. Their dangerous forms depend on which interaction selects a basis and how precisely the resulting projection is stabilized. Calling them “coherence feeders” would overstate the evidence. They are organisms whose bodies require coherence relations that ordinary environments destroy or redistribute fast.

Redundant records

Quantum Darwinism studies how information about selected pointer states can proliferate into multiple environmental fragments. Many observers then recover compatible information indirectly, which produces the practical objectivity of classical properties.

Redundant records are valuable to several Tindalosian organisms, because they stabilize projected anatomy. They also impose constraints. A Hound described, photographed, remembered, and measured from several directions has fewer ways to stop being that particular body.

Cleaners consume residual correlations. Erasers reduce historical redundancy. Palimpsest manifestations grow when separated fragments are assembled into one recoverable model. Second Observers occupy the failures of consistency between record families.

These processes require physical carriers. A Cleaner cannot eat abstract knowledge detached from matter. It acts on neural tissue, documents, storage devices, copied signals, trained behavior, architecture, or another system carrying the relevant correlation.

Boundary geometry

Edges, corners, interfaces, horizons, and defects can support localized physical modes. The exact behavior depends on the field, the material, the topology, and the boundary conditions. Corner Brood exploit the fictional extension of this principle most directly, maintaining projected bodies in vertex-localized modes.

Probability Reefs and False Vacuum Nests are habitat engineers. They change which states, modes, and histories stay locally accessible. Other organisms live on the boundaries those habitats maintain.

Accessibility

Information can exist while remaining inaccessible to a particular observer. Horizons provide the clearest physical example, though observer-relative access shows up in less dramatic settings too. The Horizon Shepherd moves organisms and records across such access boundaries. Worldline Leeches and Causal Parasites exploit connected trajectories and intervention channels.

Accessibility is relational. An archive may be available to one institution and causally closed to another. An environmental record may exist globally while no local agent can reconstruct it. Tindalosian organisms respond to the physical network carrying that access, not to human notions of secrecy or importance.

Functional catalogue

The entries collected during this cycle fit more coherently into functional guilds than into a conventional taxonomy.

Guild membership does not settle ancestry. An Eraser may be a predator in one environment and a detritivore in another. A Cleaner may be a Hound symbiont without sharing any lineage with it. The Entangled Pair may represent a taxon, a sex, a developmental strategy, or a common response to projection risk.

The category projection syndrome corrects the most consequential early mistake. Several named “species” may be ordinary angular organisms deformed by different human measurement environments.

A Palimpsest Hound is a Hound forced back into anatomy by reconstructed evidence. A Many-Hounded Thing is a single animal distributed across a finite set of prepared outcomes. A Decoherent body reflects incompatible observer couplings. These names describe how the patient was injured.

Our taxonomy contains diagnoses.

Hounds as boundary browsers

The Hound’s native feeding behavior was first observed in Mesocosm Thirty and later inferred from older incidents.

Probability Reefs accumulate regions where environmental records support mutually restrictive closures. Left unchecked, one closed structure can monopolize the accessible boundary space and reduce the Reef’s diversity. Hounds travel along the junctions and cut these structures away.

The comparison with terrestrial grazing is functional rather than anatomical. Browsers modify habitat while feeding. Their movement redistributes propagules. Their selective pressure changes which growth forms persist. Their waste supports scavengers and decomposers.

Hounds perform the same work:

  • Their mouthparts shear dense correlation boundaries.
  • Their passage opens routes between Reef regions.
  • Blue material shed during projection carries Spore networks.
  • Cleaners remove indigestible records and damaged localization tissue.
  • Corner Brood colonize the vertices exposed by cropping.
  • Vacuum Grazers enter the field modes released by the removed closure.

The traditional encounter places this behavior in the wrong substrate. Observation forces a Hound into one definite body. The record network connecting witness, room, instruments, memories, and copies becomes a dense closure attached to its projected anatomy.

The animal answers with the same structures it uses to remove closures from a Reef.

In curved spacetime, the closure runs through a human observer.

This explains why pursuit follows records rather than geography. It also explains why destroying the observer can release the Hound without feeding it. The jaws are involved, but the event is closer to an animal chewing through a snare than to one consuming prey.

Predation stays possible in particular Hound populations. The current evidence supports browsing as the ancestral or common niche. Demonstrating a predatory lineage would take repeated prey selection, ingestion, metabolic gain, capture specialization, or improved reproduction.

Why the Hound looks built to kill

Large herbivores and omnivores can carry horns, tusks, crushing jaws, defensive armor, speed, and highly developed threat responses. Anatomy reflects feeding, competition, defense, and locomotion all at once.

A Hound has to cut structures that are mutually supported across several physical carriers. Its browsing apparatus has to stay effective while the substrate changes state, basis, geometry, and accessibility. When projected into human anatomy, those surfaces resemble teeth, claws, proboscides, or cutting limbs, because curved-space observation demands localized tools.

Its apparent smoke is also an artifact of projection. Endlichwerden describes the experience from within: discarded possibility, entropy, and raw existence leave the body as it is forced into one history. A healthy Hound in a compatible angular habitat does not trail blue vapor. Persistent emission is a sign of localization injury.

Cleaner attendance provides further evidence. Cleaners concentrate around blue membranes, highly redundant wounds, and structures imposed by observation. Their activity reduces the Hound’s Scent and may permit delocalization. The relationship looks like grooming, wound debridement, and the removal of attached parasites.

Ecological networks and cascades

An ecosystem contains more than a food chain. Species compete, facilitate, parasitize, engineer habitat, transport offspring, recycle waste, and alter detection or access for one another.

Represent a local angular community as a directed network. Each node is an organism, population, habitat, or resource pool. Each edge records a tested interaction:

  • Resource: one node consumes or transforms something supplied by another.
  • Regulation: one node prevents another from monopolizing a limiting resource.
  • Carrier: one node transports another organism or developmental state.
  • Habitat: one node creates the boundary conditions another requires.
  • Interference: one node blocks or damages another’s process.

Removing a well-connected node can propagate through the network. Paine’s classic intertidal experiments showed that removing a predator could let one competitor monopolize space and reduce local diversity. Angular communities can undergo comparable cascades without using familiar predator-prey relations.

Remove Hounds from a Probability Reef and closed histories accumulate. The Reef loses accessible alternatives. Vacuum Grazers are shut out of the suppressed modes. Corner Brood overbuild the remaining junctions. Spores fruit into increasingly similar bodies. A habitat once distributed across many compatible possibilities becomes brittle.

Remove Cleaners and Hounds stay attached to their projection wounds. Their Scent rises, Palimpsest recurrences become common, and Erasers arrive to exploit the resulting redundancy.

Remove Corner Brood and some structures become safer for humans. Spore development and Reef repair may fail, because the required vertex modes no longer exist.

Kill a Zeno Predator and its prey may consume every interval in which a habitat can change state.

Correct action depends on function. Species names alone provide little operational value.

Cthulhu Eternal: Ecological Stress

Use Ecological Stress when Protagonists enter a site containing three or more interacting Tindalosian entities. The track measures the loss of functional relationships, not the number of monsters present.

StressCommunity stateObservable effects
0FunctionalResource fluxes stay stable; entities occupy their established niches
1DisturbedFeeding, migration, or reproduction changes near one damaged link
2CompensatingAnother entity expands its activity or enters the vacated niche
3Guild failureOne function such as cleaning, browsing, scavenging, or habitat maintenance stops
4CascadeAt least three nodes change behavior; manifestations spread beyond the original site
5Habitat collapseProjection syndromes appear and organisms use human systems as substitute carriers
6EvacuationThe community abandons its angular habitat through observers, records, geometry, and instruments

The Handler begins by drawing four to eight nodes and the important edges between them. Each edge has to name a physical carrier or boundary. “The Cleaner helps the Hound” is not enough. “The Cleaner consumes redundant records embedded in blue thoracic membranes” is usable.

Raising Stress

Raise Stress by 1 when:

  • Protagonists destroy a node without replacing its function.
  • A key carrier is severed while dependent organisms are still present.
  • A containment procedure forces incompatible niches into one state.
  • A failed intervention lets one organism monopolize a limiting resource.
  • An imported organism establishes a new functional link.

One event raises Stress once even if several consequences follow. A fumble during an intervention may raise it twice when the Handler identifies two independently damaged links.

Mapping relationships

A successful test identifies one node, resource, or edge. Useful skills include Alertness, Anthropology, Archeology, Computer Science, Forensics, Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, Search, SIGINT, Survival, and Unnatural, depending on the carrier.

A critical success also establishes the direction of transfer or predicts the immediate effect of removing a node. A failed roll still reveals observable evidence while leaving the function uncertain. A fumble creates a plausible but wrong classification that has to meet contradictory evidence later.

Correct classification grants Ecological Leverage. Spend one point of Leverage to:

  • Predict where an organism will move when a named resource changes.
  • Gain +20% on one test exploiting a mapped relationship.
  • Replace a lost function temporarily with a physical intervention.
  • Prevent one Stress increase after an announced action.
  • Redirect a dependent organism toward another compatible node.

Leverage cannot command an organism or cancel an unknown power. The players have to name the mapped edge and explain how their action changes its carrier.

Lowering Stress

Stress falls by 1 when the Protagonists restore a missing function, isolate a cascade behind a compatible boundary, or remove a monopolizing organism while preserving the resource network.

Killing every visible creature does not automatically lower Stress. At levels 4 through 6, it usually removes more functions and accelerates the collapse.

Cthulhu Eternal: projected boundary browser

This profile represents a Hound maintained inside a partially compatible mesocosm. A Hound forced directly into an ordinary room may carry different attacks according to the observation and geometry stabilizing it.

Attacks and abilities

Boundary shear 60%, damage 1D12, Armor Piercing 5. The Hound closes its browsing surfaces around a physical carrier supporting an overconstrained record. Against living tissue, the attack follows the carrier through nerves, scars, implants, clothing, or held equipment. Identifying and releasing the relevant tether before the attack grants +20% to Dodge.

Crop closure 70%, costs 3 WP. The Hound removes one mapped record edge or boundary obstruction. If the closure is harming the local ecosystem, Stress falls by 1. If the closure is maintaining containment, Stress rises by 1 and the contained entity gains an exit route. The Hound responds to the physical density of the closure and cannot read the investigators’ intent.

Flight through observation, Lethality 15%, costs 6 WP. Available at Stress 5 or 6, or when the unnamed flight stimulus appears. The Hound follows the strongest active observer coupling into an adjacent environment. Everyone physically carrying that coupling faces the Lethality attack. On a failed Lethality roll, add the percentile dice for damage. Breaking line of sight alone does nothing after cameras, memories, and instruments have copied the record.

Cleaner tolerance. A Cleaner may enter the Hound without provoking an attack. Each uninterrupted round of cleaning removes one projected wound, restores 1D4 WP, and reduces the Hound’s contribution to Scent. Killing the Cleaner during contact inflicts 1D6 damage on the Hound and releases the consumed records into nearby carriers.

Spore shedding. When the Hound loses 5 or more HP from one attack or projection event, one developmental network enters nearby residue, records, or trained observers. Use the Tindalosian Spore rules if the network later receives a viable model and fruiting geometry.

Curvature injury. At the end of each scene spent outside compatible geometry, the Hound loses 1D4 WP. At 0 WP it loses 1 HP per scene and uses Crop Closure against the strongest tether available. This behavior continues even when the tether is a person.

Operation: Mesocosm Thirty

This compact operation begins after nineteen days of apparent stability. The Protagonists are brought in because a containment review has found disagreements among the biological, quantum-information, and security teams.

Initial network

NodeFunctionPhysical carrier
Probability ReefHabitatCoherently controlled chamber states and mutually inconsistent environmental records
Vacuum GrazersPrimary conversionSuppressed electromagnetic modes near the Reef
Corner BroodBoundary constructionDefects in the containment frame
Juvenile HoundBrowsing and Spore transportDense Reef closures and angular junctions
CleanerWound treatment and detritivoryBlue membranes and copied observation records
Spore patchReproductionResidue, laboratory models, and the staff’s trained diagnostic behavior

Begin at Ecological Stress 1. The security director wants the Corner Brood burned out. The principal investigator wants to increase measurement precision. The biosafety officer wants the Cleaner isolated. Any of those actions can be attempted safely after the relevant functions are mapped and replaced.

Evidence

  • Wear patterns on the Hound’s mouth correspond to Reef closures rather than animal tissue.
  • Grazers enter modes released right after browsing.
  • Spore markers concentrate in freshly cropped regions.
  • The Cleaner reduces both thoracic injury and record redundancy.
  • Brood-free sections of the frame accumulate malformed Reef boundaries.
  • Every entity shows synchronized stress responses several seconds before equipment registers any local change.

The flight stimulus

The external stimulus begins when the Protagonists obtain four Ecological Leverage or when Stress reaches 4. It occupies no node in the local network. Its presence is inferred from simultaneous flight responses, missing accessible states, and the compression of the Hound’s realized niche.

Each round after onset, Stress rises by 1 unless the group expands the Reef into an unsurveyed state or provides a controlled observer coupling leading to prepared containment. At Stress 6, the Hound uses Flight through Observation. Spores distribute into staff and archives. The Cleaner enters the Hound. Corner Brood fracture the frame into escape geometry.

The group can save Vale by redirecting the coupling through an instrument, an artificial observer, or an isolated volunteer. Doing so determines where the Hound manifests and which records carry its Scent.

Resolution

If the Protagonists preserve four functions and provide an escape history inside the Reef, the community survives. Data recovered from that history contains the first measurable outline of the flight stimulus.

If they evacuate the Hound into curved spacetime, Mesocosm Thirty stabilizes without its browser. Closed histories begin accumulating within days. The remaining community eventually collapses unless another browser is introduced.

If they sterilize the chamber, the immediate threat ends. Several records show that something followed the departing organisms as far as the observation boundary and then turned toward the human archive.

Additional operations

The bleached Reef

A Probability Reef has collapsed into one dominant history after Hounds vanished from the region. Restoring it takes a browser. The only available Hound is still tethered to the descendants of the family it attacked in 1926.

The cleaner strike

An agency exterminates Cleaners after discovering that they consume classified records. Hound manifestations become longer, more violent, and more anatomically complete. The Protagonists have to cultivate a replacement Cleaner population without letting it reach unrelated archives.

The closed reserve

A research organization has maintained an angular preserve by preventing all external observation. Funding auditors require proof that the preserve exists and holds protected organisms. Producing that proof will change the habitat being protected.

The introduced grazer

A Hound is released into a contaminated Reef to control causal overgrowth. It thrives, breeds through Spore networks, and removes closures faster than the habitat can replace them. Investigators have to determine whether predation, sterilization, or migration can regulate a population whose members do not share one present.

The empty niche

Every known organism in an angular community carries an adaptation that makes sense only under heavy predation: synchronized flight, sacrificial projections, rapid dormancy, decoy records, or armor facing the same inaccessible direction. The predator itself has never been observed.

Handler principles

  • Give every ecological effect a carrier, resource, or boundary.
  • Let correct classification produce leverage before it produces danger.
  • Treat guild labels as hypotheses supported by repeated behavior.
  • Require evidence of metabolic or reproductive benefit before declaring predation.
  • Keep organism intelligence local and embodied. Sensitivity to a gradient does not imply understanding of human institutions.
  • Track functions before bodies. Two creatures may perform one function, and one creature may perform several.
  • Make extermination a valid choice with measurable consequences.
  • Allow artificial replacements. A machine, protocol, habitat modification, or captive organism may supply a missing function.
  • Preserve uncertainty where several ecological models fit the observations.
  • Remember that suffering does not make a Hound safe.

Where the science ends

Hutchinsonian niches, fundamental and realized niches, sampling bias, food webs, habitat engineering, ecological succession, trophic cascades, nonequilibrium free energy, quantum relative entropy, resource theories, basis-dependent coherence, decoherence, pointer states, and redundant environmental records all belong to real scientific work.

The equations in this article do not imply that information is a food, that coherence supports organisms, or that ecological communities occupy alternative histories. Quantum resource theories describe constraints on physical state transformations under specified operations. Quantum Darwinism describes the proliferation of information about selected states into environmental fragments. Neither theory supplies biology with access to unrealized possibilities.

An ecological niche is an abstract description of the conditions under which a population persists. It is not a literal higher-dimensional enclosure.

The resource vector, angular guilds, Probability Reef metabolism, boundary browsing, record detritivory, projection syndromes, and Mesocosm Thirty are Tindalosian inventions.

The fiction keeps several real restrictions. Coherence is basis dependent. Information requires a physical carrier. State transformations have thermodynamic costs. Redundancy changes accessibility and stability without creating matter. Later inference changes a model rather than rewriting an event. Ecological claims require repeated observations and should stay provisional when the sampling process is biased.

Sources and further reading

Flight response

The final surviving camera in Mesocosm Thirty recorded one image every eight milliseconds.

During the first image, the Hound was feeding. Its browsing surfaces enclosed a knot of Reef tissue while Vacuum Grazers gathered behind the cut.

During the second, every Brood-occupied vertex closed.

During the third, the Cleaner entered the Hound’s chest.

During the fourth, the animal had turned toward Senior Technician Vale. The Reef behind it held fewer accessible histories than the previous frame.

During the fifth, the Hound struck the window.

Frame analysis found an older injury beneath the new fractures. A channel passed through the animal from several incompatible dorsal surfaces and narrowed toward the same absent source. Scar tissue showed that the wound had begun healing before the Hound entered the chamber.

The same scar appears in fourteen archived Hound manifestations. Its orientation changes with each projected anatomy. Its source stays fixed in angular state space.

The research team revised the Hound’s flight behavior accordingly. Entering curved spacetime causes catastrophic injury, temporal confinement, and probable death. Under natural conditions, the animal still chooses that route.

The next report concerns the condition capable of making curved time the safer habitat.
