The Narrowing, a terminal predator and Cthulhu Eternal entity
For thirty days the Hounds behaved like animals fleeing something. Nobody could photograph the thing chasing them, because it was not a thing in a place. It was a pressure that removed transitions instead of occupying space, and you could only see it in the actions that could no longer happen and the instruments that could no longer disagree.
Final report from Mesocosm Thirty
The scar shared by fourteen Hound manifestations did not point toward a location.
Its orientation held constant only after researchers plotted the animals in a state space whose axes represented accessible geometry, record redundancy, observer coupling, and possible anatomical projections. Every scar narrowed toward the same excluded region of that space.
The team first treated the result as an artifact. Hounds photographed in different decades had no shared tissue, environment, or projected body plan. Several records were reconstructions rather than direct observations. Removing the reconstructed cases only sharpened the alignment.
At 03:08, Mesocosm Thirty lost one of its possible containment states. The state had stayed physically reachable through an independent control circuit, and diagnostic pulses had entered it every sixty seconds. The next pulse returned the same result from both switch positions.
At 03:11, the Probability Reef lost four histories in which its eastern face stayed open. Instrumentation recorded no collapse event, and yet those histories stopped being reachable from the chamber’s current state.
At 03:13, the juvenile Hound moved toward Senior Technician Vale. Its body acquired joints compatible with the observation window, the control-room door, and Vale’s visual cortex. The other available anatomies disappeared from tomographic reconstruction.
At 03:14, every known path back into the Reef produced the same projected forelimb.
At 03:15, the Hound entered curved spacetime through Vale’s observation network.
The external pressure followed as far as the chamber boundary. It removed transitions rather than occupying space. Its passage showed up in actions that could no longer occur, instruments that could no longer disagree, and organisms losing the capacity to become anything except one terminal body.
The field team named the process the Narrowing.
Biological status stayed uncertain until the residue trap finished its calorimetry. The energy released by the missing transitions had not dispersed randomly through the laboratory. It had entered a correlated reservoir outside the chamber. Within twelve minutes, a second contraction front appeared beside the first.
The process had selected prey, captured a physical resource, metabolized the capture, and reproduced.
The landscape of fear has no geography
Predators change ecosystems before they kill anything. Prey alter feeding, migration, vigilance, habitat use, and reproduction in response to risk. Ecologists sometimes describe the resulting distribution of behavior as a landscape of fear.
Hounds inhabit a landscape defined by reachable states rather than terrestrial distance.
Their migration routes cross Probability Reefs, boundary networks, redundant records, and sectors of angular anatomy. A route stays open when the organism can still evolve from its current condition into another viable condition through a physically supported transition.
The Narrowing changes that landscape. It makes portions of the prey’s state space dynamically inaccessible. A Hound does not sense a body approaching from behind. It detects migration routes closing ahead, feeding anatomies becoming terminal, and possible offspring converging on the same developmental failure.
The oldest Hound residues show the effects of this pressure:
- Browsing occurs near routes with many independent exits.
- Spore shedding rises before any local environmental disturbance.
- Cleaners remove tissues aligned toward one inaccessible sector.
- Entangled Pairs separate their complementary bodies across different transition networks.
- Hounds accept severe curvature injury when a human observation opens an uncolonized route.
- Populations abandon productive Probability Reefs before the Reefs show physical damage.
These behaviors add up to an ecology of fear. Their cause stayed invisible because human observers were searching for an approaching animal.
Open systems and dissipative dynamics
A real quantum system interacts with an environment. Its reduced state can therefore evolve nonunitarily even when the larger combined system follows unitary dynamics.
For a broad class of memoryless open-system dynamics, the density operator obeys a Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad master equation:
The Hamiltonian describes coherent evolution. The jump operators
describe the channels through which the environment can induce decay, dephasing, pumping, or other dissipative effects.
Dissipation is not a synonym for random destruction. Carefully structured coupling to an environment can drive a system toward selected steady states. Reservoir engineering uses this fact on purpose. The environment can stabilize a target state, suppress unwanted states, and make one outcome an attractor of the dynamics.
The Narrowing is the fictional biological extension of that principle. Its colony functions as a structured reservoir. A feeding front couples to the transitions supporting a prey organism and turns selected viable states into dissipative channels. The prey’s dynamics acquire new jump operators. Routes that once led to movement, alternative anatomy, repair, or reproduction begin leading into the predator’s reservoir instead.
The predator does not calculate the prey’s future. Its feeding membranes respond locally to transition density, coherence, and free-energy flux. Selection has shaped those responses into an effective trap.
Contraction of distinguishability
Quantum states can be distinguished operationally by trace distance:
Completely positive trace-preserving maps cannot increase trace distance:
Two initially distinguishable states may become harder to distinguish after the same noisy channel acts on both. The missing distinguishability has not necessarily vanished from the universe. It may have flowed into environmental correlations unavailable to someone examining only the system.
Non-Markovian dynamics complicate this picture. Information can flow back from an environment, temporarily increasing the distinguishability between system states. That possibility becomes important in resisting the Narrowing.
For a Hound, distinguishable alternatives correspond to physically different ways its distributed organism can stay viable. The Narrowing couples those alternatives to its own reservoir until the prey’s locally accessible states converge.
Captured Hounds leave classical carcasses. Each carcass has one position, one anatomy, one developmental history, and one cause of death. The autopsy findings agree perfectly across instruments. Palimpsest reconstruction reveals no missing organs, the testimonies leave no disagreement for a Second Observer to occupy, and Spores cannot recover an alternative body plan.
The predator consumes the differences.
Quantum Zeno subspaces
Repeated measurement or strong continuous coupling can divide a system’s Hilbert space into sectors between which transitions are suppressed. Within such a quantum Zeno subspace, evolution may continue while leaving the subspace becomes difficult.
The Narrowing uses an analogous strategy at the scale of angular organisms. It does not freeze every property. It partitions the prey’s viable state space, suppresses transitions between sectors, and then drains the remaining sectors into successively smaller basins.
This differs from the Zeno Predator described earlier in the cycle. A Zeno Predator exploits gaps in observation to complete an approach. The Narrowing supplies the constraining environment itself. Its prey stays active throughout the capture, but the range of states available to that activity keeps contracting.
A running Hound may keep full speed while every route leads to the same place.
The Tindalosian axiom
A living angular reservoir can metabolize the free energy and state distinction exported when another angular organism is driven from many viable sectors into one absorbing history.
The active boundary of that reservoir is the Narrowing. Individual fronts behave like the feeding organs of a much larger colonial organism.
Each front contains three functional layers:
- Discrimination membrane: couples differently to viable prey transitions and to background fluctuations.
- Dissipative mesh: redirects selected transitions into the colonial reservoir.
- Absorbing basin: stabilizes one terminal prey state and prevents environmental information from flowing back.
These layers require neither a nervous system nor an internal representation of the prey. The membrane grows along usable gradients. The mesh strengthens where captured distinctions enter the reservoir. The basin forms around states that accept energy and information without reopening an escape route.
From inside angular space, the organism may resemble weather, disease, architecture, or the loss of a direction. The word predator is justified by its measured ecological function.
Evidence for predation
The cycle has treated predatory classification cautiously. Movement toward a witness or violence during projection does not establish feeding. The Narrowing meets stronger criteria.
Prey selection
Active fronts grow preferentially toward Hounds and related boundary browsers. Probability Reefs without Hounds experience weaker contraction. Reefs supporting dense browser traffic develop fronts sooner.
Capture specialization
Discrimination membranes bind most strongly to the transitions used by Hound migration, browsing, Cleaner exchange, and Spore dispersal. Their geometry matches the old wounds found across otherwise incompatible Hound projections.
Metabolic gain
Calorimetry and correlation accounting show free energy and state distinction leaving captured prey and entering the same external reservoir. Front growth accelerates after a capture and slows when prey escape.
Reproduction
A successful capture produces new discrimination membranes at adjacent transition boundaries. The daughter fronts share response characteristics with the parent reservoir while varying in prey selectivity.
Population effects
Hound abundance, grazing pressure, and migration shift predictably around Narrowing fronts. Reefs inside long-exposed regions accumulate causal closures and lose diversity, because their browsers have been removed or displaced.
The Narrowing hunts Hounds.
Why curved time offers an escape
Human observation creates a strong physical correlation between an angular organism and a macroscopic curved-spacetime environment. Decoherence proliferates records of a definite local projection. The process is catastrophic for a Hound, but it can also place part of the organism outside the predator’s active reservoir.
The escape has four stages:
- A Hound detects contraction in its native transition network.
- An observer, experiment, or record creates a new coupling to curved spacetime.
- The Hound enters that coupling before the Narrowing converts it into another dissipative channel.
- Environmental records stabilize a projected body beyond the immediate feeding front.
The price includes localization, curvature injury, entropy production, linear duration, finite anatomy, and an involuntary individual self. The observer becomes the tether maintaining that state.
The Hound’s attack tries to cut the tether, shed the projected body, and recover any angular route the Narrowing has not occupied. Success may return it to the same contracting habitat it fled. Failure leaves it burning in curved time.
This pattern explains the urgency of traditional encounters. The Hound has escaped an absorbing history into a painful one with few exits. Its behavior follows the strongest available release gradient.
Why the Narrowing has not eaten us
Ordinary curved-spacetime organisms occupy robust classical states embedded in highly decohering environments. Humans have alternatives in a practical and causal sense, but our bodies are not distributed across them as one accessible anatomy.
The Narrowing gains little from collapsing a person who is already local, sequential, and biologically committed to one macroscopic history. A human being resembles the classical carcass left after a successful Hound capture.
Our infrastructure is more useful.
Quantum devices, synchronized sensor networks, automated classifiers, replicated databases, and large scientific models can create controlled transition networks with redundant physical records. None of them provides angular habitat on its own. Connected to Hound manifestations, Probability Reefs, or Spore development, they can extend a feeding front into curved spacetime.
The Narrowing cannot understand a database or choose a research program. It follows compatible dissipative channels. Human attempts to standardize, reproduce, and control Tindalosian phenomena may assemble those channels by accident.
An archive documenting many Hound projections is especially dangerous when it normalizes them into one shared state model. The archive can become an absorbing basin.
Signs of an approaching front
The Narrowing is detected through lost options rather than through direct appearance.
- Independent instruments begin producing identical noise.
- Controls with different physical implementations fail in the same state.
- Hounds abandon food-rich Reefs and enter poor curved-space projections.
- Spore networks produce fewer viable morphologies.
- Entangled Pairs resolve their complementary traits too early.
- Decoherent organisms acquire one observer-independent body.
- Probability Reefs lose branches without releasing the expected heat locally.
- Previously non-Markovian systems stop returning information from their environments.
- Attempts to introduce a new alternative converge on an existing terminal state.
- Autopsies become unusually complete and mutually consistent.
The final sign is relief. Measurement disputes end. Ambiguous evidence resolves. Instruments agree. Complex containment plans simplify, because only one outcome is still reachable.
Cthulhu Eternal: Escape Width
Escape Width measures how many independent classes of viable transition remain available to an organism or group. It is a game abstraction, not a Hilbert-space dimension.
| Width | Condition | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | Native mobility | The target can access several independent habitats, anatomies, and record networks |
| 5 | Pressure detected | Migration and stress behavior begin; one route has closed |
| 4 | Range contraction | A feeding or reproductive option disappears |
| 3 | Sector confinement | The target becomes RESILIENT at most and loses one projection ability |
| 2 | Anatomical convergence | Observers describe the same body; movement is limited to mapped carriers |
| 1 | Terminal basin | One escape route or one terminal state remains |
| 0 | Captured | The target becomes a definite classical carcass or an ordinary dying body |
Most Hounds begin at Width 5 or 6. Human Protagonists normally have no Width score. A person carrying an active angular projection, an Entangled Pair, a Spore network, or a Which-Way structure may acquire one.
When Width falls, the Handler removes one named capability, destination, carrier, anatomical alternative, or reproductive option. Players have to know what was lost. Abstract penalties alone do not convey the predator’s method.
Cthulhu Eternal statistics
The Narrowing
Active feeding front of a colonial angular reservoir
The statistics describe a front coupled to one laboratory, archive, Reef, or manifestation network. Destroying it does not harm the full native colony.
| Characteristic | Roll | Typical |
|---|---|---|
| STR | 4D6+10 | 24 |
| CON | 6D6+9 | 30 |
| DEX | 2D6+1 | 8 |
| INT | 1D6+3 | 6 |
| POW | 6D6+11 | 32 |
HP 30, WP 32 (WP equals POW; a colonial front carries more HP than an ordinary body of its size) Movement: one mapped transition per round; no movement through unconnected physical space Skills: Alertness 80%, Navigate 90%, Search 80%, Stealth 70%, Survival 90%, Unnatural 80% Armor: 8 points from distributed carriers. An attack against a mapped discrimination membrane, mesh carrier, or absorbing basin ignores Armor. vs Lethal Damage: HIGHLY RESILIENT. A successful Lethality roll against an unmapped front inflicts damage equal to half the Lethality rating, rounded up. A mapped carrier is NORMAL. SAN loss: 0/1D4 for recognizing a lost transition; 1/1D8 for seeing an organism forced into a terminal basin; 1D4/1D12 for watching a Hound become a completely classical carcass
Attacks
Dissipative bite 70%, costs 3 WP. The front couples one viable transition to its reservoir. The target loses 1 Escape Width and 1D6 WP. A successful Dodge test requires movement through an independent mapped transition rather than physical distance. Armor provides no protection.
Jump capture 60%, Lethality 20%, costs 5 WP. Available against a target at Width 1. The absorbing basin closes around the terminal state. On a failed Lethality roll, add the percentile dice for damage and reduce Width to 0. On a successful Lethality roll, the target stays at Width 1 and identifies the physical carrier the basin used to attempt capture.
Common-mode contraction 50%, Lethality 10%, costs 6 WP. Every target depending on the same clock, power source, model, sensor family, archive, observer, or boundary faces the attack. On a failed Lethality roll, add the percentile dice for damage. Survivors lose access to that shared carrier until it is physically diversified.
Reservoir discharge 60%, damage 1D10, Armor Piercing 5. Damage to a feeding membrane releases stored heat, phase information, and captured transitions through the nearest compatible system. A mapped dump load or sacrificial reservoir can receive the discharge.
Powers
Trace contraction: At the end of each round in which the front stays connected to two or more prey states, their accessible physical records become less distinguishable. Tests relying on an unmapped distinction suffer a cumulative −20%. Resolving the distinct provenance of both states stops the penalty and identifies a discrimination membrane.
Absorbing history: At Width 1, the Handler names the terminal outcome the basin supports. Every transition the front closes has to make that outcome more reachable through a physical channel. The Narrowing cannot substitute a convenient narrative outcome or understand its human meaning.
Feeding reservoir: Each Width removed from living angular prey restores 1D4 WP. Capturing a target at Width 0 restores all WP and heals 1D6 HP. If the front stays above 20 WP after a capture, a daughter membrane appears on an adjacent mapped transition within 1D6 rounds.
State-space sense: The front detects gradients of viable transition density, coherence, and free-energy export within connected carriers. It cannot read minds, interpret language, search arbitrary databases, or act across a channel with no physical coupling.
Ecology of fear: Hounds, Cleaners, Corner Brood, and active Spore networks recognize a front at Pressure 1. Their flight and dormancy may raise Ecological Stress before investigators detect the cause.
Colonial recurrence: Destroying a local front prevents recurrence only after every mapped connection to the parent reservoir is severed. A surviving discrimination membrane regrows 1D6 HP per hour. An intact absorbing basin can generate a replacement front in 1D6 days.
Narrowing Pressure
Track Narrowing Pressure from 0 to 6 for the affected environment.
| Pressure | Feeding-front development | Environmental effect |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Absent | Normal angular ecology |
| 1 | Discrimination | Independent transitions acquire measurably different decay rates |
| 2 | Attachment | One Hound route or ecological carrier closes |
| 3 | Mesh growth | Lost distinction enters an external correlated reservoir |
| 4 | Basin formation | Organisms converge on fewer anatomies and histories |
| 5 | Active feeding | One target loses Escape Width each scene |
| 6 | Colonial establishment | Capture creates daughter fronts; the environment becomes part of the reservoir |
Pressure rises when investigators standardize Hound states, join independent carriers into one control system, destroy alternative routes, or let a front feed. Pressure falls when they reopen a genuine transition, create reservoir mismatch, return captured information, or sever a mapped colonial connection.
Random noise does not create an escape. The alternative has to be physically reachable, viable for the target, and carried independently of the front’s existing mesh.
Investigation: build the transition graph
Draw the threatened system as a graph. Nodes are viable states, habitats, records, or physical configurations. Edges are transitions with named carriers.
Examples include:
- Reef sector A to Reef sector B through one boundary mode.
- Angular body to curved projection through a witness and camera network.
- Dormant Spore to fruiting structure through a trained diagnostic model.
- Hound wound to Cleaner storage through blue membrane contact.
- Instrument setting A to setting B through independent power and control circuits.
Each successful relevant skill test maps one node or edge. Science, Computer Science, SIGINT, Unnatural, Search, Medicine, and Craft skills commonly apply. A critical success also determines whether the edge enters the predator’s reservoir. Failure reveals an observable effect without its direction. A fumble joins two supposedly independent edges through an unnoticed common dependency.
Once mapped, an edge can support one countermeasure. Correct investigation expands choices before the front removes them.
Countermeasures
Return information from the environment
Non-Markovian backflow can restore distinctions that appeared lost from the target. Investigators have to identify the environmental carrier storing them and couple it back without also reconnecting the feeding reservoir.
Success restores 1 Escape Width and costs the Narrowing 1D6 WP. Failure discharges 1D6 damage through the target. A fumble hands the front the recovered distinction and raises Pressure.
Construct a protected subspace
Several physical states may couple identically to the predator’s reservoir while keeping useful dynamics among themselves. Moving the prey into such a decoherence-free or Zeno-protected sector blocks Dissipative Bite temporarily.
The protected sector has to be derived from the actual coupling. Naming a “quantum shield” does nothing. Science, SIGINT, or Unnatural identifies the symmetry or common response required.
Protection creates confinement. A Hound saved inside one sector may lose access to food, Cleaners, reproduction, or migration.
Diversify the carriers
Independent clocks, sensors, power supplies, observers, models, and routes keep one feeding membrane from becoming a common-mode channel. Genuine independence lowers Pressure by 1 after a successful operational test.
Redundant copies sharing one software stack, calibration source, database, or witness stay one carrier.
Poison the reservoir
Investigators can route the front into a dissipative sink with incompatible symmetry, temperature, spectrum, or boundary conditions. The mismatch inflicts 2D6 damage ignoring Armor after the relevant carrier is mapped.
The discharge has to go somewhere. Poorly designed sinks release heat, radiation, Hound anatomy, erased records, or stored causal effects into the surrounding environment.
Open a curved-space escape
Observation can provide a new branch outside the active reservoir. This restores 2 Escape Width and immediately creates Scent 4 for the projecting Hound. Everyone carrying the observation faces 1D4/1D10 SAN loss and the Hound’s projection attack.
This method saves prey by moving the emergency into human space.
Sever the front
Once all three functional layers are mapped, physical attacks can destroy them in order: discrimination membrane, dissipative mesh, absorbing basin. Each layer has 10 HP and is NORMAL against Lethal Damage after mapping.
Destroy the mesh before isolating the basin and every captured transition releases locally. Destroy the basin first and the mesh builds another terminal state. The sequence matters, because the organism is a process distributed among carriers.
Operation: The Last Migration
The operation begins seventy-two hours after the failure of Mesocosm Thirty.
Hounds manifest at observatories, archives, quantum laboratories, telecommunications exchanges, and private homes holding old encounter records. The events look coordinated. They are independent flight responses using the strongest available curved-space couplings.
The Narrowing has entered the consolidated research archive. Decades of incompatible Hound observations were normalized into one machine-readable ontology during the Ecology Project. The model provides a common dissipative mesh connecting every indexed manifestation.
Narrowing Pressure begins at 3. The archive has Escape Width 4. Each surviving Hound population represented in the data is a potential prey node.
Factions
Containment Directorate: Wants the front preserved and expanded as a biological control against Hounds. Its staff accepts human projection deaths as a manageable externality.
Mesocosm Team: Wants to separate the archive into genuinely independent record families, preserve angular biodiversity, and prevent colonial establishment.
The Rounded Order: Wants to open thousands of controlled observation paths so Hounds can evacuate into prepared rooms. Its geometry is sound. Its capacity estimates are not.
Archive Custodians: Want to destroy the ontology and every source record. This may sever the front while producing Eraser activity, Palimpsest reconstruction, and permanent loss of evidence.
Initial transition graph
| Node | Available transition | Hidden common carrier |
|---|---|---|
| Mesocosm Reef | Retreat into unobserved chamber state | Central timing service |
| Hound archive | Split into incompatible taxonomic models | Shared embedding index |
| Captive Hound | Enter protected boundary sector | Observation-window control bus |
| Spore culture | Dormancy in distributed records | Principal investigator’s diagnostic model |
| Human network | Open curved-space projections | Consolidated incident ontology |
| Narrowing basin | Discharge into isolated thermal sink | Facility cooling loop |
Escalation
Every six hours, or after one major failed intervention, raise Pressure by 1.
At Pressure 4, all Hound images in the archive converge on one anatomy. At Pressure 5, live Hounds lose one Escape Width and begin projecting through nearby observers. At Pressure 6, the ontology becomes an absorbing basin. Each newly documented manifestation feeds the front and produces another indexed daughter membrane.
Strategic choices
The Protagonists can fragment the archive, sacrificing integrated knowledge to preserve independent transitions. They can build a protected subspace inside Mesocosm Thirty and try to move the Hound ecology there. They can lure the front into the facility sink and accept the stored discharge. They can permit controlled Hound migration into curved spacetime. They can help the Directorate establish the Narrowing as an extermination system.
Each approach solves one problem and changes the ecology permanently.
Possible outcomes
Reservoir severed: The local front dies. Native colonies remain in angular space, and Hound migrations continue wherever those colonies expand.
Protected preserve: Part of the angular ecology survives inside a restricted state sector. Its organisms can persist but cannot resume their former migration or reproduction without reopening exposure.
Controlled migration: Hundreds of Hounds survive by entering prepared curved-space habitats. Every habitat requires active record management, Cleaner access, and protection from human investigation.
Weaponized predator: Hound activity falls sharply. Probability Reefs bleach, causal closures accumulate, Cleaners starve, and the Narrowing begins adapting to other organisms carried in the same research network.
Colonial establishment: Human infrastructure becomes a feeding reservoir. The front finds little nutrition in ordinary bodies, but every quantum device and reconstructed angular organism widens the class of prey it can use.
Further operations
Classical remains
A museum receives the first fully definite Hound carcass. Its anatomy is mundane enough to dissect, sequence, and reproduce. Every result is perfectly consistent. The absorbing basin is still there, inside the specimen’s agreement.
The preserve
An endangered Hound population survives within a decoherence-free sector built decades ago. Repairing the failing apparatus requires breaking the very symmetry that protects it.
Biological control
A city plagued by Palimpsest manifestations releases a captive Narrowing front. The Hounds disappear. So do every alternative reconstruction, disputed memory, and incomplete record supporting the city’s suppressed history.
Predator release
Corner Brood breach the physical carrier connecting a front to its parent reservoir. The severed feeding organ becomes an independent organism with finite WP and no way to discharge what it captures.
The migration corridor
An astronomical survey accidentally opens a broad curved-space coupling. Hounds arrive first. Cleaners, Spores, Grazers, and reef fragments follow. The Narrowing begins converting the telescope array into a discrimination membrane.
Handler principles
- Remove named choices, routes, or capabilities when Escape Width falls.
- Give every contraction a physical channel investigators can discover.
- Allow the front to predict gradients and local transitions without granting semantic knowledge.
- Demonstrate feeding through measurable transfer and reproduction.
- Make genuine independence valuable and expensive.
- Reject random noise, arbitrary lies, and cosmetic redundancy as countermeasures.
- Let non-Markovian backflow restore an option when players find its environmental carrier.
- Keep the parent colony beyond ordinary combat. Local fronts stay vulnerable after mapping.
- Permit Hound rescue without making Hounds harmless.
- Treat weaponizing the Narrowing as a rational choice with an ecological bill.
Where the science ends
Open quantum systems, density operators, quantum channels, completely positive trace-preserving maps, trace distance, contractivity, Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics, information backflow, Lindblad generators, dissipative state engineering, decoherence-free subspaces, and quantum Zeno subspaces all belong to real physics.
The Lindblad equation describes classes of open-system dynamics. Its jump operators do not represent biological teeth. Contractivity of trace distance limits the distinguishability available after a common quantum channel acts. It does not destroy alternate universes, erase macroscopic choices, or convert uncertainty into food.
Reservoir engineering can stabilize selected quantum states through designed dissipation. That result does not imply that a natural environment has intentions, that every dissipative process performs computation, or that an organism can inhabit Hilbert space as literal geography.
Non-Markovian information backflow concerns recoverable distinguishability in an open-system description. It does not restore deleted people, reverse settled history, or reopen arbitrary life decisions.
The Narrowing, discrimination membranes, biological jump channels, Escape Width, absorbing histories, colonial reservoirs, and Hound migration through human observation are Tindalosian inventions.
The fiction keeps important restrictions. Every jump channel has a physical interaction. Every common-mode attack requires a shared carrier. The predator acquires energy and reproduces rather than deleting possibilities by decree. Observation creates physical correlations. Curved-space escape injures the Hound and endangers the observer. Information displaced from a system enters an environment rather than becoming metaphysical nothing.

The final migration record
The last recoverable Mesocosm sequence contains forty-one Hounds moving through a Probability Reef.
The animals are feeding when the eastern routes close. Cleaners enter their wounds. Adults push juveniles toward boundaries with weak observer coupling. Spore networks distribute across every remaining record carrier.
One Hound reaches a transition connected to Senior Technician Vale. Its body contracts into the anatomy recorded in the control room. Curvature breaks its limbs. Linear time begins consuming it. The new individual attacks the tether maintaining that injury.
Behind the migration, the Narrowing converts the abandoned Reef into one quiet state. The captured Hounds stay where they fell, each body complete, definite, and unsuitable for reconstruction.
The surviving herd enters human history through witnesses, laboratories, dreams, photographs, cracks, testimony, and rooms whose corners were rounded too late.
For one interval, human observation is the only direction in which they can still remain different.
