False Vacuum Nest

An environmental-organism entry for Cthulhu Eternal

Ground-penetrating radar described an empty room stretching farther than the building itself. The thermal camera showed the far wall straight through a sphere that had masonry standing behind it. When the foreman hit the boundary with a sledgehammer, something hit back from the empty side.

The cleanest part of the building

The demolition crew found the volume behind a partition wall in the abandoned maternity hospital.

It was almost spherical, 2.8 meters across, and perfectly transparent. It reached through concrete, through copper plumbing, through an examination table and a filing cabinet, and each object ended at the same smooth boundary. Nothing looked cut. There was simply no material inside the sphere.

Dust would not enter it. Smoke split around it without a trace of turbulence. A work light shone through with a delay too small for anyone to see and just large enough to ruin the surveyor’s interferometer.

Ultrasound came back with no echo. Ground-penetrating radar described an empty room extending farther than the building. A thermal camera showed the opposite wall through the sphere, even with masonry standing behind it.

The foreman struck the boundary with a sledgehammer, and something struck back from the empty side.

Classification

A False Vacuum Nest is an angular reproductive habitat built out of a finite region of metastable field vacuum. It occupies a location, grows, develops offspring, reacts to injury, and eventually either collapses or spawns. It has no locomotor body, and it never gives chase.

Human investigators usually meet one as a volume of excessive emptiness:

  • Dust and gas flow around an invisible boundary.
  • Matter ends cleanly at the wall, with no exposed fracture surfaces.
  • Sound crosses with frequencies missing, or fails to return at all.
  • Light picks up a small phase delay.
  • Clocks disagree across the diameter.
  • Chemical reactions near the surface change rate.
  • Heat transport runs along the outer wall instead of crossing the interior.
  • Instruments report mutually incompatible distances through the same volume.

The nest is biological in its organization and environmental in its scale. Its gestational patterns live on the domain wall. Its interior supplies the field conditions in which angular anatomy can take on structure before it enters curved spacetime.

Vacuum as a field state

In quantum field theory, a vacuum means a lowest-energy or locally stable state of the fields in question, which is a more specific idea than the colloquial “empty space.”

Consider a scalar field

\phi

with an effective potential

V(\phi)

A local minimum at

\phi_f

may hold greater energy density than a deeper minimum at

\phi_t

The state at

\phi_f

is a false vacuum. It can stay metastable because a potential barrier separates it from the lower-energy state, and quantum tunnelling can nucleate a bubble of that lower-energy phase.

The semiclassical decay rate per unit volume has the form

\frac{\Gamma}{V} \approx A e^{-B/\hbar}

where (B) is the Euclidean bounce action and (A) collects fluctuation and dimensional factors. That exponential is what makes small changes in the bounce action matter enormously.

In the thin-wall approximation for a lower-energy bubble, let

\epsilon=V(\phi_f)-V(\phi_t)>0

and let

\sigma

be the wall tension. Coleman’s four-dimensional Euclidean bounce has radius

R_B=\frac{3\sigma}{\epsilon}

and action

B=\frac{27\pi^2\sigma^4}{2\epsilon^3}

The matching real-time thin-wall energy for a spherical bubble is schematically

E(R) = 4\pi R^2\sigma - \frac{4\pi}{3}R^3\epsilon

Surface tension pulls toward contraction. The lower interior energy pushes toward expansion. The unstable critical radius in this real-time energy picture is

R_c=\frac{2\sigma}{\epsilon}

Subcritical bubbles collapse. Supercritical bubbles grow, their walls accelerating fast toward relativistic speeds.

Why a discovered nest has not destroyed the world

A lower-energy vacuum bubble above the critical radius makes no useful game situation. The advancing wall rewrites the local field state and can alter particle masses, interactions, stable nuclei, chemistry, and every material structure it reaches. Nearby observers get no practical warning before a relativistic wall arrives on top of them.

A survivable False Vacuum Nest runs the opposite energy ordering. Its interior holds a higher vacuum-energy density than the state around it:

\Delta V = V_{\mathrm{inside}}-V_{\mathrm{outside}} >0

Its ordinary thin-wall energy is

E_{\mathrm{ordinary}}(R) = 4\pi R^2\sigma + \frac{4\pi}{3}R^3\Delta V

Both terms favor inward collapse. A finite higher-energy pocket needs something extra to hold it open.

The Tindalosian axiom

A False Vacuum Nest uses a nonlocal network of angular boundary conditions to stabilize a finite higher-energy vacuum pocket and to encode reproductive information as domain-wall modes.

Write its total effective energy as

E_{\mathrm{nest}}(R) = 4\pi R^2\sigma + \frac{4\pi}{3}R^3\Delta V + E_A(R,\{\theta_i\})

where

E_A

is the fictional angular contribution and

\{\theta_i\}

describes the brace network coupled to corners, cracks, records, scars, and other suitable boundaries.

A stable nest radius (R_*) requires

\left.\frac{dE_{\mathrm{nest}}}{dR}\right|_{R_*}=0, \qquad \left.\frac{d^2E_{\mathrm{nest}}}{dR^2}\right|_{R_*}>0

Established field theory offers no angular term that could hold a room-sized false-vacuum pocket open inside a hospital. That term is exactly where the fiction lives.

Reproduction on the wall

The nest’s developmental information exists as coupled excitations of its domain wall. Nodes, standing waves, phase defects, and localized modes form a shifting pattern across the otherwise invisible surface.

Each gestational pattern specifies a boundary condition from which projected anatomy can develop. Matter shows up later, assembled from wall energy, captured environmental particles, Hound residue, and whatever field excitations survive the spawning.

A single nest may turn out several forms:

  • Corner Brood adapted to the vertices on hand.
  • Microscopic Zeno Parasite nodules.
  • Tunnelling organisms suited to thin barriers.
  • Undifferentiated angular larvae.
  • Sensory or anchoring organs built into some larger organism.
  • Symbionts that latch onto a passing Hound during manifestation.

This reproductive medium may be shared across taxa. A Hound can seed or transport a nest without being biological parent to everything it produces. Blue residue provides angular topology, field contamination, energy, and molecular feedstock all at once.

Growth cycle

Seeding

A microscopic field defect anchors to one or more sharp boundaries. Good sites include architectural corners, fractures, scar tissue, instrument cavities, database omissions that have a physical carrier, and damaged Hound anatomy.

The seed shows up only through repeated phase anomalies, or through the unexplained exclusion of particles from a tiny volume.

Excavation

The interior field state displaces ordinary matter as the pocket grows. Gas and loose particles flow around it. Solids that intersect the expanding wall are converted, displaced, or folded into wall excitations.

The location turns unnaturally clean.

Inflation

Angular braces establish a stable radius. The domain wall grows strong enough to exclude macroscopic matter while staying weakly transparent to selected radiation.

The nest starts harvesting ambient energy and contamination.

Patterning

Standing modes spread across the wall. Interferometry, clock comparison, acoustic spectroscopy, and vacuum sensors all pick up organized periodicity.

Every stable mode maps to a developing structure or a support system.

Projection

Partial organs form where wall modes cross braces. Their movement becomes visible through condensation, dust, blue residue, detector noise, or matter shed from the outer surface.

The nest starts answering disturbances defensively.

Spawning

The braces change phase in a coordinated sequence. The pocket contracts as wall energy and gestational patterns convert into daughter defects and projected organisms.

A healthy spawning event can leave the site structurally intact and thoroughly infested.

Gestation Track

GestationDevelopment
0Dormant seed or sterilized pocket
1Microscopic exclusion and phase anomalies
2Stable braces; wall modes begin organizing
3Macroscopic pocket; environmental matter is harvested
4Distinct developmental patterns can be mapped
5Functional organs and daughter defects appear on the wall
6Spawning sequence begins

Gestation normally rises by 1 after a site-specific interval: hours in a laboratory, days in a building, years in a dormant ruin. Abundant Hound residue, Corner Brood activity, directed radiation, or repeated Tindalosian manifestations can shorten it.

Investigators can lower Gestation by dephasing the developmental modes. Physical damage usually raises Wall Stress instead.

Wall Stress

Wall Stress measures how far the nest has drifted from its stabilized configuration.

StressCondition
0Stable equilibrium
1Measurable oscillation; no immediate hazard
2Radiation, clock drift, acoustic loss, and brace movement
3Matter crosses or leaves the boundary unpredictably
4Partial organisms are shed; collapse becomes possible
5Brace cascade; one Observation Interval remains before failure
6Inward collapse, spawning rupture, or vacuum inversion

Add 1 Stress when:

  • The wall takes a significant mechanical impact.
  • A brace is destroyed without compensating for the load.
  • High-energy radiation is deposited asymmetrically.
  • Rapid temperature, pressure, or vibration changes distort the host structure.
  • A technical attempt to manipulate wall modes fails.
  • An offspring tears free before maturation.

Reduce Stress through symmetric support, phase matching, the removal of external vibration, the restoration of braces, or a successful controlled contraction.

Environmental statistics

False Vacuum Nest, mature reproductive habitat

Radius: 0.1 to 20 meters; larger examples should be run as sites rather than single encounter hazards CON 24, POW 20 Wall Integrity: 24 Angular Bracing: 4 independent braces for a typical room-sized nest Gestation: 0 to 6 Wall Stress: 0 to 6 Stored Energy: 1 to 4 Armor: 10 against ordinary kinetic or thermal attack vs Lethal Damage: IMMUNE while Angular Bracing stays active; NORMAL only during controlled dephasing or inward collapse SAN loss: 0/1D4 to recognize that a volume of matter has been replaced by transparent vacuum; 1/1D6 to see gestational anatomy moving across the wall; 1D4/1D10 to witness spawning or an asymmetric collapse

The nest has no STR, DEX, movement, or conventional attacks. Its environmental responses come through the wall, the braces, and the developing offspring.

Boundary contact

Matter pushed into the wall is reflected, converted, or partly excluded. A brief touch inflicts 1D6 damage and leaves a geometric lesion. Limb-scale penetration is Lethality 15%. A whole-body crossing is Lethality 40%.

On a failed Lethality roll, add the dice for damage. Survivors lose tissue in smooth field-selected volumes, gain embedded blue residue, or come away carrying an angular defect.

Vacuum pulse

At Stress 3 or higher, the nest can discharge one wall mode through a brace. Everyone within twice its radius tests DEX×5. Failure inflicts 2D6 damage from radiation, pressure, electrical induction, or flying material. The physical carrier depends on the site.

Defensive projection

At Gestation 5, the nest can spend 3 POW to externalize one immature organ for an Observation Interval. Treat it as STR 16, DEX 14, HP 6, Armor 2, Unarmed Combat 60%, damage 1D8. Destroying the organ adds 1 Stress.

Brace cascade

When a brace fails, test the nest’s CON×5. Success transfers the load and adds 1 Stress. Failure destroys a second brace and adds 2 Stress. Keep going until a test succeeds or no braces remain.

Stored Energy

Stored Energy sets how bad a collapse gets.

EnergyInner zone, within radiusOuter zone, within triple radius
1Lethality 10%1D6 damage
2Lethality 20%2D6 damage
3Lethality 40%Lethality 10%
4Lethality 60%Lethality 20%

Structures, fire, radiation, and secondary hazards can reach farther. Stored Energy describes a gameable local pocket, not the conversion of an entire cosmological vacuum.

Three failure modes

Inward collapse

Angular support fails while the interior is still higher in energy than the ambient vacuum. Surface tension and volume pressure drive the wall inward.

The pocket’s stored energy comes out as wall excitations, particles, radiation, pressure, heat, and malformed offspring. Resolve Stored Energy by zone. Every surviving brace becomes an angular contaminant at the collapse center.

Spawning rupture

Gestational patterns detach before the contraction can order itself. Reduce Stored Energy by 1 and produce one daughter outbreak per point of Gestation above 2.

Choose offspring the site can support: Corner Brood in fractured architecture, Zeno nodules in monitored tissue or equipment, tunnelling forms in thin barriers, undifferentiated larvae around Hound residue.

The building may survive while every suitable boundary in it gets colonized.

Vacuum inversion

An intervention couples the nest interior to a field state lower in energy than the surrounding vacuum. Investigators see a sign change in the effective pressure, outward acceleration despite lost bracing, or a switch from inward to outward wall curvature.

This event is a narrative red line. It is never rolled off a random failure table. A supercritical lower-energy bubble cannot be contained with ordinary field equipment, weapons, or Cthulhu Eternal combat mechanics.

The Handler should use inversion only when the campaign is explicitly about preventing nucleation before it happens. Once a supercritical expanding bubble exists, local play is over.

Survey procedure

Establish the boundary

Use smoke, suspended particles, acoustic pulses, low-power radar, thermal gradients, clock comparison, and interferometry. Do not treat any single instrument as authoritative near an altered vacuum state.

Each successful Science, Search, Engineering, or SIGINT test maps one sector without raising Stress. Direct probing risks Boundary Contact.

Determine the energy ordering

Measure whether the wall accelerates inward or outward after a tiny controlled perturbation. Compare field pressure, wall curvature, and brace response. This takes three successful Science tests using at least two independent methods.

A failed test yields ambiguous data, and it adds 1 Stress only if the team ran a physical perturbation.

Until the sign of

\Delta V

is known, any competent protocol forbids collapse operations.

Map the braces

Braces show up as nonlocal correlations between wall sectors and external angles. Tap one corner and you may get a phase response on the far side of the nest.

Each successful Unnatural, Science, Search, or Architecture test identifies one brace and its load. Destroying an unknown brace triggers a Brace Cascade.

Resolve the gestational modes

Pattern recognition across interferometry, clocks, acoustic spectra, and blue-residue movement reveals which wall modes support offspring and which support containment.

Three successful tests identify a developmental mode. Five identify enough of the pattern to dephase it safely.

Remediation

Developmental dephasing

Apply low-energy, phase-controlled perturbations around the wall to break up gestational synchronization while leaving the radial support modes intact.

Complete three opposed Science or Unnatural tests against nest POW. Each success reduces Gestation by 1. A failure adds 1 Stress. A critical failure produces one immature Defensive Projection.

Symmetric contraction

Once Gestation reaches 1 or lower, reduce the angular support evenly. Every active brace has to surrender load during the same Observation Interval.

One operator tests the weakest relevant skill among Science, Engineering, and Unnatural, with +20% for a fully mapped nest. Success reduces radius and Stored Energy by one step. Failure adds 1 Stress and triggers a Brace Cascade test.

Repeat until the pocket reaches microscopic scale. The remaining seed can be held in rounded, vibration-isolated material with no sharp internal junctions.

Energy drainage

Couple accessible wall excitations into sacrificial resonators, thermal masses, particle absorbers, or angularly contaminated substrates. This can bring Stored Energy down before contraction.

Every drainage step needs a successful Science or Engineering test. Failure carries a gestational mode along with the energy, and it may turn the receiving apparatus into a daughter seed.

Controlled spawning

When dephasing would destabilize the vacuum, let gestation finish inside prepared containment instead. Map every likely daughter boundary, isolate suitable corners, and install independent capture systems.

At Gestation 6, test Science or Unnatural against nest POW. Success reduces Stored Energy by 2 and releases one viable daughter population into the prepared structures. Failure causes a Spawning Rupture.

Relocate the site

Moving the surrounding building does not necessarily move the nest. Each brace has to stay coupled to its original angular relation.

Relocation means building a new brace network, overlapping it with the old one, and transferring load one brace at a time. This is major engineering work, and it should stay a campaign-scale project rather than a casual equipment roll.

Practices that make everything worse

  • Gunfire deposits energy asymmetrically and gives you no useful control over wall modes.
  • Explosives combine mechanical shock, heat, radiation, and brace destruction in one package.
  • Drilling locates the wall by sacrificing the drill, and possibly its operator.
  • Evacuating the surrounding room changes the pressure without touching vacuum-energy density.
  • Cooling reduces ordinary thermal hazards while leaving the field potential largely alone.
  • Recording only visible light misses most of the developmental modes.
  • Destroying every corner can create fractures, debris, and thousands of new brace candidates.
  • Feeding the nest arbitrary Hound residue speeds development and changes the offspring pattern.

Fair use at the table

  • Fix the nest’s radius, braces, Gestation, Stress, Stored Energy, and energy ordering before play.
  • Let careful remote survey work.
  • Name the physical consequence of every failed manipulation.
  • Keep developmental modes distinct from containment modes.
  • Give players enough evidence to determine the sign of the interior energy difference.
  • Track Stress openly once the nest is recognized.
  • Reward symmetric, low-energy intervention.
  • Keep collapse finite and zoned.
  • Reserve vacuum inversion for an explicitly chosen campaign premise.
  • Treat viable offspring as separate entities after spawning.

The nest rewards technical caution and punishes ordinary combat instincts. Flipping its energy ordering at random after the investigators commit to a sound procedure just turns physics into a trapdoor.

Compact incident: Saint Orison Maternity

Renovators uncover a 2.8-meter nest spanning an examination room and the sealed nursery next to it. Gestation is 4, Stress is 2, Stored Energy is 2, and four braces attach to corners in rooms numbered 1, 4, 9, and 16.

Records show a patient survived an undocumented Hound event in the hospital in 1976. Blue residue entered an oxygen line and seeded the wall cavity. Renovations changed the architecture again and again while carefully preserving those four room corners.

The sledgehammer impact raises Stress to 3. Condensation now outlines several hand-sized forms moving around the inner wall, their limbs dividing at every brace response.

Investigators can establish the higher-energy interior, map the four braces, dephase the gestational pattern, and contract the nest. Or they can permit a controlled spawning to learn what has been developing there for fifty years.

The hospital’s new owner wants the volume gone before an insurance inspection. The organism inside wants the construction noise to stop.

Scenario hooks

Clean room

A semiconductor plant hits impossible particulate control in one fabrication bay. Yield climbs until completed wafers start ending at the same invisible spherical boundary.

The production lasers are feeding a nest whose wall modes resemble circuit layouts.

Displacement

An oceanographic vessel develops unexplained positive buoyancy. Seawater, ballast, hull plating, and part of the engine room have all been replaced by a transparent pocket attached to four structural corners.

Dry-docking changes the load on every brace at once.

Negative conservation

A museum shows an empty glass case as conceptual art. Visitors report that reflections inside it hold objects that are not in the gallery.

The artist found the case in a condemned laboratory and has been adding sharper frames around it to “improve the composition.”

Vacuum fault

A particle-physics laboratory detects a persistent vacuum volume outside its evacuated beam pipe. Safety staff assume an instrument error, because the region holds less gas than the apparatus built to create vacuum.

Beam timing is synchronizing the nest’s gestational modes.

The inheritance

A family has kept one room empty for three generations. Furniture placed inside loses a smooth spherical portion overnight. Family photographs show the missing volume growing by several centimeters each decade.

The will requires the room to stay architecturally unchanged. Altering it may release the thing the restriction has been holding.

Ecological role

False Vacuum Nests provide a reproductive bridge between angular field patterns and curved-space anatomy. They gather energy and local matter, shelter developmental modes, and turn out organisms adapted to whatever boundaries the site provides.

Hounds may carry seeds without meaning to, in damaged tissue or blue residue. Corner Brood can extend the brace network by producing new vertices. Vacuum Grazers may feed on excess wall energy and slow gestation. Zeno Parasites can stabilize particular developmental transitions. Tunnellers can leave the nest before full spawning by working a thin section of the domain wall.

So the nest functions as habitat, nursery, food source, and ecological junction all together. Destroy one and you affect far more than its offspring. Scavengers arrive, symbionts lose their shelter, parasites go looking for new hosts, and dormant seeds soak up the energy the collapse releases.

Field classification

FALSE VACUUM NEST Type: Angular reproductive habitat and environmental organism Habitat: Corners, cavities, scars, laboratories, ruins, vehicles, and structures contaminated by Hound residue Diet: Ambient field energy, matter intercepted by the wall, angular contamination, and organized radiation Behavior: Excavates a higher-energy vacuum pocket, stabilizes it with angular braces, patterns offspring on the domain wall, and collapses during spawning Movement principle: Local expansion, contraction, and brace transfer; no locomotion Primary sign: A transparent volume from which matter, dust, sound, and ordinary distance have been selectively excluded Containment principle: Determine the energy ordering, map braces, dephase gestational modes, drain wall energy, and contract symmetrically Critical hazard: Physical damage destabilizes the field structure while leaving its stored energy and offspring intact

Where the science ends

Quantum fields, effective potentials, metastable vacua, semiclassical tunnelling, Euclidean bounce solutions, domain-wall tension, critical bubbles, gravitational corrections to vacuum decay, and questions about electroweak vacuum stability all belong to real theoretical physics.

The Standard Model vacuum may be metastable when extrapolated to extremely high energies, with the conclusion sensitive to measured parameters and to physics beyond the Standard Model. None of that implies that empty rooms hold detectable bubbles, that ordinary construction can trigger vacuum decay, or that a collider poses a practical risk of destroying the universe.

Known physics offers neither a room-temperature method for stabilizing a macroscopic higher-energy vacuum pocket on architectural corners, nor reproductive code written into domain-wall oscillations.

The Tindalosian axiom supplies the nonlocal brace term, the macroscopic field selectivity, the developmental patterning, and the controlled conversion of wall excitations into anatomy. Gestation, Wall Stress, offspring, and the remediation procedures all follow from that one invention.

Final inspection

The Saint Orison nest was contracted down to a pocket smaller than a grain of sand.

The containment team recovered the examination table, the copper pipe, the concrete, and the filing cabinet from the volume the nest had occupied. All of it came back as warm gray powder with no surviving structure.

They found one intact object in the powder. It was a hospital identification bracelet sized for an infant.

The date of birth on it was tomorrow.
