A reproductive caste and adaptive-selection dossier for Cthulhu Eternal
Three instruments looked at the animal and disagreed completely about what was inside the shell. They agreed only on its mass, its temperature, and its pulse. When labor began at 02:14, four shadows separated around the shell, and every one of them called Dr. Lin by the nickname her mother had used when she was a child.
Obstetric record EM-23
The animal arrived in a ceramic transport shell with no opening large enough to admit it.
Dr. Hester Lin measured one body through the shell. Radiography found a six-limbed skeleton curled around a clutch of dense eggs. Ultrasound showed a sac of moving fluid with no bones in it. Magnetic imaging resolved a segmented organism whose long axis ran through the shell wall and came back from the opposite side.
All three instruments agreed on mass, temperature, pulse rate, and exterior position.
Lin repeated the scans with independent equipment. Each result came back exactly the same.
The veterinary team prepared for several hazards. They rounded the containment room, installed continuous optical surveillance, lowered the temperature, and sealed the ventilation system. Lin argued that redundant precautions made sense while the patient’s anatomy was still unknown.
The next radiograph showed the eggs developing compound eyes.
Ultrasound picked up larvae pressing against the ventilation ducts.
The magnetic image acquired a ring of photoreceptors facing every camera.
At 02:14 the patient went into labor. Four shadows separated around the shell, and each shadow belonged to a different animal.
The attending team heard four voices through four instruments. Every voice called Lin by the nickname her mother had used when she was a child.
Three begged her to change the room. One thanked her for choosing.
Classification
An Eigenmother is a mobile reproductive caste that carries several mutually incompatible organisms as coherent developmental alternatives. Before delivery, its curved-space projection exposes only the coarse properties every candidate form happens to share. Internal anatomy, metabolism, movement, offspring, and cognition all stay encoded inside an angularly protected subsystem.
Reproduction correlates each possible maternal form with its corresponding offspring. Once those offspring interact independently with the environment, one correlated form becomes the stable classical outcome.
An Eigenmother gives an angular incursion rapid ecological adaptation without waiting for conventional evolution to discover a solution after arrival. Fire, surveillance, rounded architecture, vacuum isolation, chemical defenses, available hosts, and the rest of the local conditions all influence which candidate lineage becomes objective.
The maternal organism survives selection in the chosen form whenever development runs normally. The unselected candidate identities stop contributing to the projected body. Whether they die, become inaccessible, or persist elsewhere in angular time cannot be settled from curved-space evidence.
One exterior, several anatomies
Represent the protected maternal state as
Each basis state
describes a complete candidate organism. The alternatives are orthogonal at the scale reproduction cares about, because their anatomical states are macroscopically distinguishable. One may have lungs and another gills. One may produce Corner Brood while another produces a tunnelling juvenile. Their tissues cannot share one ordinary physiological arrangement.
The exterior projection reveals observables for which the candidates carry roughly the same eigenvalues. Suppose an external interaction measures only total mass, coarse position, and boundary temperature. If
for every candidate, the interaction picks up little information capable of telling them apart. Coherence among those alternatives can stay hidden from that particular channel.
An instrument probing internal structure couples to an observable that separates them. So different instruments may correlate with different internal decompositions while still agreeing on the exterior quantities available to ordinary handling.
Real macroscopic animals cannot hold this arrangement together in a room. Their surfaces scatter photons, exchange heat, collide with gas, vibrate the floor, and put out chemical products specific to their anatomy. Those interactions record which alternative is present almost at once.
The biological mystery starts with the fact that the Eigenmother’s ordinary exterior does not expose enough of its internal state for the room to make that distinction.
Decoherence and the preferred basis
Consider a system initially in a superposition
and an environment beginning in state
Interaction can correlate the system alternatives with distinct environmental states:
The reduced density operator of the system becomes
When the environmental states tied to different alternatives become nearly orthogonal,
the off-diagonal terms drop out of any local observation. Interference between the alternatives is suppressed.
The interaction Hamiltonian helps decide which states stay stable under monitoring. These robust states are usually called pointer states. Environment-induced superselection, or einselection, describes how particular alternatives become privileged by their stability under environmental coupling.
The environment needs no mind and makes no decision. Air, photons, instruments, walls, and living tissue carry off distinguishing information through ordinary physical interaction.
For an Eigenmother, the delivery room is part of the measurement apparatus. Its geometry, atmosphere, temperature, radiation, sensors, and organisms all influence which reproductive alternatives get redundantly recorded.
Decoherence-free subspaces
Quantum information can sometimes be encoded so that the relevant environmental noise acts identically on several logical states. When the environment cannot tell states within that encoding apart, their relative coherence can be protected. This is the motivation behind decoherence-free subspaces and subsystems.
For a system-environment interaction written schematically as
a protected subspace can exist when every interaction operator acts identically on its basis states:
for all states
within the encoding and for every relevant
The environment then learns nothing about the logical distinction among those states from that noise channel.
Laboratory decoherence-free encodings involve carefully controlled quantum systems and symmetries. They do not hide several animal anatomies behind one membrane. What the concept supplies is a legitimate mathematical pattern for the fictional mechanism: several alternatives stay coherent because ordinary curved-space interactions get the same coarse response from each of them.
Reproduction as a measurement interaction
Let the undifferentiated offspring state be
Development correlates the maternal alternatives with their corresponding offspring:
The offspring states start out within the same protected angular encoding. During separation, they contact the environment independently:
Once the environmental records become effectively orthogonal, the curved-space description behaves like a mixture of correlated mother-offspring outcomes:
Each experienced outcome holds a mother and offspring matched to one reproductive alternative.
This interaction does not universally clone an unknown quantum state. The no-cloning theorem forbids a fixed physical operation that perfectly copies every arbitrary unknown state. Orthogonal basis states can be correlated with distinguishable apparatus states, which is exactly how an ideal measurement records alternatives. The Eigenmother works from a finite reproductive basis chosen by its own biology.
The impossible part stays enormous. No known organism preserves macroscopic superposition, hides candidate anatomies from uncontrolled interaction, or coordinates childbirth with environment-induced selection.
The Tindalosian axiom
An Eigenmother encodes several complete reproductive phenotypes within an angular decoherence-free subsystem. Its curved-space membrane presents the same coarse interaction signature for each candidate. Offspring separation breaks that protection, letting local environmental coupling select a stable correlated maternal and offspring form.
The axiom adds four capabilities that known physics lacks:
- Macroscopic coherent encoding across incompatible anatomies.
- Selective shielding of internal structure through angular degrees of freedom.
- Developmental correlation between maternal and offspring alternatives.
- Biological control over which environmental interactions define the reproductive pointer basis.
The mother cannot choose any organism she likes. Her candidate basis is finite and physically prepared before discovery. Environmental conditions shift the selection among those candidates. They do not grant limitless adaptation after the fact.
Why the ecology needs her
An angular incursion enters an environment full of unfamiliar constraints. Local gravity, temperature, chemistry, geometry, predators, instruments, and containment methods may all differ from the conditions its projected anatomy developed in.
Conventional natural selection needs variation across generations. The Eigenmother carries several already-organized variants through one gestation. Delivery exposes them to local selection at the exact moment the reproductive state becomes public.
That makes her a portable adaptive bottleneck. A False Vacuum Nest can generate and sustain developmental modes at a location. An Eigenmother carries a compact set of those modes into new territory and turns local hazards into selection pressure.
Corner Brood stay colonial organisms bound to defects and vertices. They may show up among her candidate offspring, but they are one ecological option, not universal Hound larvae. Hounds may transport or guard an Eigenmother, because she can seed organisms capable of weakening the curved-space conditions that trap them.
The process carries a severe cost. Every unselected candidate loses access to the shared body. Mature Eigenmothers often delay reproduction, seek out low-information environments, or attack instruments that push one outcome into dominance too soon.
Cognition among candidates
Some Eigenmothers support distinct mental states inside each candidate anatomy. The shared exterior feeds them common sensory information, while internal interpretation, memory, appetite, and reproductive interest all differ.
Communication can isolate one candidate by using a channel that preferentially couples to it:
- Ultrasound may pick up speech from a fluid-borne form.
- Thermal imaging may reveal gestures from a heat-adapted form.
- Vibration analysis may carry a tunneller’s language.
- Camera occlusion patterns may communicate with an observation-adapted form.
- Chemical sampling may expose a parasitic form’s signals.
Every conversation also measures. Sustained exchange builds the environmental record supporting that candidate and can bias the delivery.
The candidates generally understand this. One may beg for continued contact while another damages the instrument carrying its rival’s voice. Several may cooperate to hold the maternal superposition together until a safer environment turns up.
Each candidate treats its own offspring as real and the others as lethal competitors for one shared future.
Appearance
The exterior looks like a heavy translucent membrane stretched over anatomy that never settles into one depth. The shared organs stay visible: a pulsing central mass, branching vessels, a mouth or intake fold, and a distended reproductive chamber.
The candidate structures appear only through interactions that distinguish them:
- X-rays show bones that ultrasound cannot find.
- Magnetic imaging resolves tissue crossing the outer membrane without piercing it.
- Blood samples support incompatible respiratory pigments.
- Different portions survive mutually lethal atmospheres.
- One wound reveals several organs, each responding to a different treatment.
- Shadows separate before any limb becomes visible.
- Surface marks resemble several embryos occupying the same boundary.
Near selection, the candidate anatomies get easier to tell apart. Environmental records pile up faster than the membrane can hide them. The mother may develop several partial silhouettes, voices, scents, and movement patterns while keeping one coarse center of mass.
Blue discharge appears where the shared boundary can no longer reconcile candidate tissue. It separates into chemically incompatible fractions depending on how it is collected.
Gestation and Selection Weight
Use a Gestation Track from 0 to 6 and three to five Candidate Forms. Each candidate has Selection Weight from 0 to 6.
Gestation measures developmental progress. Selection Weight measures how strongly the current environment records and favors one candidate basis.
Starting values
- Gestation normally begins at 2 or 3.
- Each viable candidate begins with Weight 1.
- The Handler defines every candidate, favored condition, warning sign, offspring, and weakness before play.
- At least one candidate should be manageable without forcing the Protagonists to guess an arbitrary secret.
Increasing Gestation
Add 1 after a major interval of undisturbed development, exposure to energy or feedstock, transfer into a False Vacuum Nest, or deliberate acceleration by another angular organism.
Severe injury may also add 1. Emergency delivery grows more likely once the shared maternal boundary fails.
Adding Selection Weight
Add 1 to the relevant candidate when the environment repeatedly distinguishes or favors it. A major deliberate exposure may add 2.
| Environmental interaction | Candidate commonly favored |
|---|---|
| Sharp vertices and fractures | Vertex or Corner Brood form |
| Fire, strong heat gradient, or incineration | Thermal form |
| Continuous optical surveillance | Observation-adapted form |
| Sealed walls, armor, or pressure barrier | Tunnelling form |
| Dense living tissue and close handling | Host-compatible form |
| Vacuum and low particle flux | Radiation or field-feeding form |
The Handler describes an anatomical response every time Weight changes. Cameras may grow new photoreceptors. Heat may darken one silhouette. Sealing the room may reveal structures vibrating inside the wall.
Selection
Selection happens when Gestation reaches 6, one Candidate reaches Weight 6, the mother falls to 0 HP, or investigators deliberately break the angular protection.
If one candidate exceeds every other Weight by at least 2, that form stabilizes.
When the lead is narrower, determine the outcome randomly in proportion to Candidate Weight. The game Weight represents the Born weight
not the amplitude itself.
A tie for highest Weight creates a Degenerate Delivery unless the Protagonists perform controlled basis selection. Two candidate forms partially stabilize, take on conflicting anatomy, and share one damaged body.
Controlled basis selection
Investigators can influence delivery without deciding the result by fiat.
Map candidates
Each successful Science, Medicine, Pharmacy, Surgery, Veterinary Medicine, Unnatural, or suitable technical test identifies one candidate’s favored coupling and one warning sign. A failure produces ambiguous data without changing Weight. A fumble adds 1 Weight to the candidate most strongly coupled to the instrument.
Establish a dominant environment
Create one controlled condition favoring the intended candidate while suppressing the others. Complete three successful tests using at least two distinct skills. Each success adds 1 Weight to the target. Each failure advances Gestation by 1. A fumble adds 2 Weight to an unintended candidate.
Preserve shared observables
Care that addresses mass, hydration, gross temperature, and shared membrane integrity can support the mother without distinguishing candidates. Successful Medicine, Science, or Unnatural tests delay Gestation for one scene without changing Weight.
Transfer the basis
Move the mother between prepared environments while overlapping their shared conditions. Three successful tests transfer 1 Weight from one candidate to another. Failure exposes both bases and advances Gestation. A fumble triggers Degenerate Delivery.

Attacks
Membrane lash 50%, damage 1D8. The shared exterior folds into a temporary limb. On a critical success, the target is pinned against the membrane and supplies a living measurement channel.
Diagnostic inversion 60%, opposed by POW, costs 3 WP. The mother forces a target to experience two incompatible readings of their own body. Success inflicts 1D6 WP and a SAN test at 1/1D6. Medical or sensor equipment the target is using fails for 1D4 turns.
Emergency selection 70%, costs 6 WP. The mother exposes one candidate anatomy long enough to use its signature attack, then adds 2 Weight to that candidate and advances Gestation by 1. The attack uses the selected package below. At Gestation 5 or higher, this power triggers delivery once it resolves.
Powers
Shared Boundary: External effects aimed at a feature common to every candidate work normally. A targeted effect aimed at candidate-specific anatomy reduces damage by the mother’s Armor and adds 1 Weight to the candidate best adapted to it.
Protected Alternatives: Mind reading, biological scanning, and divination pull information from the candidate they physically couple to. No single method reveals the complete set. Comparing three independent methods grants +20% to map a candidate.
Maternal Multiplicity: Each candidate may communicate through one suitable channel. The mother has one shared WP pool. SAN losses or coercive mental effects applied through a candidate hit the shared pool and may add Weight to that candidate.
Reproductive Selection: Resolve delivery through the Selection rules. The mother replaces this profile with the base selected profile plus one Candidate Package. Offspring appear according to that package.
Collapse Trauma: Controlled selection inflicts 1D6 damage with Armor ignored. Uncontrolled selection inflicts 2D6. Degenerate Delivery inflicts 3D6 and cannot reduce the mother below 1 HP until the resulting form acts once.

Candidate Packages
Vertex mother
Modification: DEX +4, Armor +2, Movement 14 through connected vertices. Offspring: One Density 3 Corner Brood colony or 2D6 mobile vertex nymphs. Attack: Facet birth 60%, damage 1D8 and Faceting +1. Armor protects only when it rounds or separates the target from occupied vertices. Power: Vertex Transit. Spend 2 WP to move between connected sharp corners without crossing intervening space. Weakness: Removing or rounding mapped vertices reduces Armor by 1 each, minimum 0.
Thermal mother
Modification: CON +4, Armor +3 against heat and fire, Movement 8. Offspring: 1D6 heat-feeding sacs that mature near active gradients. Attack: Gradient discharge 60%, Lethality 10%, costs 3 WP. Failed Lethality inflicts the sum of the percentile dice as damage. Power: Waste Heat Metabolism. Recover 1D4 WP after absorbing a major heat source. Weakness: Slow, spatially uniform cooling removes all package Armor.
Observation mother
Modification: POW +4, Stealth 80%, Movement 12. Offspring: 2D4 sensor-seeking organisms with 2 HP each. Attack: Blind the basis 70%, opposed by POW, costs 3 WP. One observer or instrument loses the ability to distinguish the mother for 1D6 turns. Power: Record Evasion. The first attack each turn that relies on a previously used observation channel suffers a 20% penalty. Weakness: Three simultaneous heterogeneous channels remove Record Evasion.
Tunnelling mother
Modification: STR +4, Armor +2, Movement 16 through barriers. Offspring: 1D4 immature Tunnellers. Attack: Boundary drag 60%, damage 2D6. The target is pulled partly through a solid barrier and pinned. Power: Macroscopic Tunnelling. Spend 4 WP to cross one mapped barrier. The movement leaves blue residue and a detectable phase delay. Weakness: Thick heterogeneous layers impose 20% penalties and double the WP costs.
Host mother
Modification: INT +3, POW +2, Armor +1, Movement 10. Offspring: 2D6 tissue-compatible larvae. Attack: Reproductive inoculation 60%, opposed by CON, costs 2 WP. Success implants one larva and inflicts 1D6 WP. Power: Borrowed Physiology. After sampling a living target, spend 3 WP to ignore one environmental hazard that target tolerates for one scene. Weakness: Sterile remote handling and species-diverse biological decoys deny it new adaptations.
Degenerate Delivery
A tied selection partially stabilizes two Candidate Packages. Apply both attacks and powers, half of each Armor bonus rounded down, and the lower Movement value.
At the start of every turn, roll POW. Failure causes 1D6 damage with Armor ignored as incompatible organs compete. A critical failure releases offspring from both packages and triggers an immediate signature attack against the nearest available target.
Investigators can resolve the degeneracy by making one environment dominant. Complete three successful relevant tests before the mother fails three POW rolls. Success removes one package and inflicts 2D6 collapse damage. Failure lets both candidate bodies separate, each with half the mother’s current HP and the full package abilities.
Countermeasures
Keep the room ordinary
Strong defensive conditions exert strong selection. A moderate environment with few specialized hazards may favor the least aggressive generalist candidate. That can mean tolerating proximity while refusing to escalate containment too soon.
Use basis-independent care
Support the shared mass, temperature range, hydration, and membrane integrity. Avoid probes aimed at candidate-specific anatomy until the team understands what each channel favors.
Diversify before comparing
Independent instruments reveal candidates. Combining their outputs into one automated model can turn into a powerful environmental record and accelerate selection. Keep raw results separate until the basis map is complete.
Prepare reversible conditions
Use containment features you can withdraw gradually: movable curved panels, adjustable atmosphere, distributed heaters, switchable detectors, layered barriers. Permanent architecture commits the room before investigators know what it favors.
Negotiate with several mothers
Candidates may hold useful knowledge about one another. Any agreement should specify which communication channel stays active and how much Selection Weight the conversation will add.
Practices that make everything worse
- Installing every available defense favors several dangerous candidates and risks Degenerate Delivery.
- Repeating one diagnostic method strengthens the candidate visible to that method.
- Treating the clearest scan as authoritative confuses channel stability with complete anatomy.
- Injuring a candidate-specific organ selects for anatomy that can survive that injury.
- Sealing the mother in a featureless chamber may strongly favor vacuum, tunnelling, or field-feeding forms.
- Bringing many personnel close to the membrane supplies hosts and observation channels.
- Killing the shared body triggers immediate selection under uncontrolled conditions.
- Letting one candidate design containment hands it control over its own measurement basis.
Running the Eigenmother fairly
- Define every Candidate Package before play.
- Reveal a physical sign whenever Selection Weight changes.
- Let successful tests map the basis without automatically advancing Gestation.
- Track Gestation and Candidate Weights openly after discovery.
- Preserve at least one manageable selection path.
- Apply defenses according to their actual physical coupling.
- Use the proportional outcome rule when no candidate dominates.
- Let careful basis-independent care buy time.
- Give candidate minds consistent goals and memories.
- Keep the incident compact unless the table chooses to build a larger operation around it.
The Eigenmother turns preparation into environmental selection. Changing candidate abilities after the players commit to evidence-based choices would replace that mechanism with a disguised random encounter.
Compact incident: Four rooms for one birth
The ceramic shell holds four candidates: Vertex, Observation, Tunnelling, and Host. Gestation begins at 4. Each Weight begins at 1.
The facility’s rounded containment adds no Weight. Continuous cameras add 2 to Observation. Sealing the ventilation adds 1 to Tunnelling. Six attending personnel working beside the shell add 1 to Host.
The Observation candidate communicates through camera occlusion and asks Lin to increase the frame rate. The Tunnelling candidate speaks through wall vibration and offers to move the entire shell outside the facility. The Host candidate uses blood samples to reproduce Lin’s childhood nickname. The Vertex candidate stays silent, because the room has denied it a viable structure.
Investigators can shut down most cameras, establish three independent intermittent channels, and reopen a filtered ventilation route. That reduces the Observation and Tunnelling advantages without creating sharp geometry. Remote handling keeps Host from gaining any more Weight.
They may also select one candidate deliberately. Each of them offers information about the Hound event that seeded the ceramic shell. Every conversation pushes its speaker closer to birth.
If Selection is still tied when Gestation reaches 6, Observation and Tunnelling stabilize together. The resulting mother can evade repeated sensors while moving through the barriers those sensors were meant to protect.
Scenario hooks
The adaptive ark
A research vessel recovers an Eigenmother at sea. Pressure, saltwater, sonar, steel bulkheads, and the crew each favor different candidates. Changing course shifts the environmental basis faster than the medical team can map it.
Protective custody
A cult wants one candidate born and has built a sanctuary around its requirements. The architecture looks humane, because every cruelty is encoded in conditions that select against the other mothers.
The premature autopsy
A dead specimen arrives for dissection. The first incision counts as a candidate-specific measurement and begins selection. The body was metabolically inactive because none of its possible anatomies had become public yet.
Mother of remedies
One candidate produces organisms capable of removing a Zeno Parasite. Another produces a form that spreads it. The medical intervention used to inspect the offspring influences which treatment becomes real.
The orphan basis
An offspring has already selected, but the mother is still coherent. Investigators have to locate the environmental record that stabilized the juvenile before they can predict which maternal body will emerge.
Field classification
THE EIGENMOTHER Type: Angular reproductive caste and portable adaptive bottleneck Habitat: False Vacuum Nests, contaminated laboratories, migration sites, and environments that demand rapid ecological adaptation Diet: Shared metabolic feedstock before selection; candidate-specific diet afterward Behavior: Protects several reproductive alternatives, maps local conditions, delays premature observation, and delivers the candidate the environmental coupling favors Reproduction: Correlates a finite basis of maternal forms with matching offspring, followed by environmental selection Movement principle: Shared curved-space locomotion before selection; candidate package afterward Primary sign: Independent instruments agreeing on coarse exterior properties while reproducibly reporting incompatible internal anatomies Containment principle: Map candidate couplings, preserve shared observables, and create one controlled reversible selection environment Critical hazard: Every specialized defense feeds the reproductive basis
Where the science ends
Quantum superposition, density operators, decoherence, environment-induced superselection, pointer states, decoherence-free subspaces, entangling measurement interactions, the Born rule, and the no-cloning theorem all belong to real quantum physics.
Decoherence-free encodings protect carefully structured quantum information against particular noise models. They do not let a macroscopic membrane conceal several incompatible animal anatomies from a warm uncontrolled environment. Measurement correlations among orthogonal alternatives do not violate no-cloning, and they do not produce biological offspring either.
Known physics supplies no angular subsystem, no macroscopic reproductive superposition, no selective biological shielding, no candidate consciousness, and no childbirth steered by an architectural measurement basis.
The Tindalosian axiom supplies those elements. Candidate Forms, Selection Weight, adaptive offspring, and Degenerate Delivery all follow as fictional game consequences.

Final delivery note
Lin switched off the cameras and opened the filtered vent. The magnetic image faded. Ultrasound showed the fluid body settling around one slow heartbeat.
At 02:31, the Eigenmother delivered a pale generalist animal small enough to hold in two hands. It breathed ordinary air. It had no claws, no armor, no photoreceptors, no visible angular organs.
Lin wrapped it in a thermal blanket.
The mother opened familiar eyes and asked which of them had survived.
Before Lin could answer, the newborn turned toward the dark camera. Something behind its eyelid went on recording.
