Causal Parasites

A channel-infesting organism dossier for Cthulhu Eternal

The brake pedal did everything it was supposed to. Pressure dropped, the cylinders extended, the pads closed on every wheel, and the current poured into the resistor bank. The wheels stayed cold and the speedometer held at 71. The cause had happened. The effect was somewhere else.

Failure report CP-24

The test locomotive entered the west curve at 71 kilometers per hour.

Engineer Safiya Nwosu applied the emergency brake. Pressure dropped through the verified pneumatic circuit. The brake cylinders extended. The pads closed against every wheel. Current from the regenerative system flowed into the resistor bank.

The train did not slow.

Wheel temperature did not change. The resistor bank stayed cold. Track sensors detected no matching momentum transfer. Nwosu applied the mechanical backup and felt the expected resistance in the handle. The speedometer held at 71.

The locomotive left the rails and crossed the maintenance floor without decelerating. It struck an empty concrete barrier at 68 kilometers per hour.

The barrier stayed intact. The locomotive stopped.

Investigators found a pale, jointed organism wedged between the brake command relay and its mounting plate. Its body had the mass of a house cat and the momentum of a locomotive.

When the technician loosened the first bolt, the parasite flexed.

Every brake pad in the depot reached 460 degrees Celsius at once.

Classification

A Causal Parasite occupies a physical process between an intervention and its outcome. It draws off part of the energy, information, momentum, or state distinguishability that would ordinarily travel through that process. The cause occurs. The expected effect turns up weaker, delayed, displaced, or missing.

The organism feeds most efficiently on reliable channels:

  • A brake command causing deceleration.
  • A drug causing a receptor-mediated physiological change.
  • A switch causing current and illumination.
  • A warning causing trained avoidance behavior.
  • An impact causing momentum transfer.
  • A measurement causing a stored record.
  • A trigger causing detonation.

Repeated operation only makes the infestation worse, because each successful intervention hands it another measurable difference to consume.

Other informational organisms occupy different niches.

A Cleaner may later remove the evidence that a treatment once worked. A Causal Parasite stops the next dose from producing its expected effect and stores the missing biochemical influence inside its own body.

Correlation does not establish causation

Two variables can correlate because one causes the other, because both share a common cause, because selection has biased the sample, or because the apparent relationship is pure accident.

Causal inference leans on interventions for that reason. An observer asks what happens when a variable is deliberately changed while the relevant alternatives are held fixed.

For a classical causal model, you can compare outcome distributions under two interventions:

P(Y\mid\mathrm{do}(X=x_0))

and

P(Y\mid\mathrm{do}(X=x_1))

If the distributions differ, changing (X) has causal influence on (Y) within the assumptions of the model.

The practical version shows up everywhere. Apply the brake and compare vehicle motion. Give the drug and compare physiology. Send a calibrated pulse and compare detector output. An observational association may mislead you; a well-designed intervention probes the mechanism.

Causal Parasites prefer systems that engineering, training, or biology has already made dependable. Strong intervention-to-outcome dependence is a large, repeatable meal.

Physical processes as channels

In quantum information, the physical evolution of an open system can often be represented by a completely positive trace-preserving map:

\rho_{\mathrm{out}} = \mathcal E(\rho_{\mathrm{in}})

The map

\mathcal E

is a quantum channel. It describes how allowed input states become output states after interaction with an apparatus, a medium, or an environment.

A sequence of operations can be composed:

\rho_{\mathrm{out}} = \mathcal E_2 \circ \mathcal E_1 (\rho_{\mathrm{in}})

An ordinary physical obstruction inserts another process. A damaged cable, an absorbing filter, a frictional bearing, a metabolic inhibitor, or a noisy communication link changes the effective channel:

\mathcal E_{\mathrm{damaged}} = \mathcal E_2 \circ \mathcal N \circ \mathcal E_1

The lost effect has a physical destination. Energy becomes heat, momentum passes into supports, and information correlates with environmental degrees of freedom. Diagnosis works by finding that destination.

A Causal Parasite acts as

\mathcal P

in the composed process:

\mathcal E_{\mathrm{infested}} = \mathcal E_2 \circ \mathcal P \circ \mathcal E_1

The visible system behaves as though an unmodeled environment has intercepted the transmission. The fictional problem starts when no local environment holds the missing quantity.

Causal influence as distinguishability

Suppose two interventions prepare states

\rho_0

and

\rho_1

After a healthy channel, the corresponding outputs are

\sigma_0=\mathcal E(\rho_0), \qquad \sigma_1=\mathcal E(\rho_1)

Their trace distance is

D(\sigma_0,\sigma_1) = \frac12 \left\| \sigma_0-\sigma_1 \right\|_1

Trace distance has an operational meaning through optimal state discrimination. A larger distance means the outputs are easier to tell apart.

If one input means “brake released” and the other means “brake applied,” a healthy vehicle produces macroscopically distinguishable outputs. After infestation, those outputs grow more similar:

D\left( \mathcal E_{\mathrm{infested}}(\rho_0), \mathcal E_{\mathrm{infested}}(\rho_1) \right) < D\left( \mathcal E_{\mathrm{healthy}}(\rho_0), \mathcal E_{\mathrm{healthy}}(\rho_1) \right)

Quantum channels cannot increase the trace distance between two states through ordinary processing. This contractivity expresses a data-processing principle: a later observer cannot gain a greater ability to distinguish the original alternatives just by passing both through the same channel.

The Parasite weaponizes attenuation. It couples to exactly the degrees of freedom that carry the intervention difference and transfers their distinguishing capacity into its own state.

Distinguishing whole channels

Comparing a single pair of inputs may miss an infestation. A Parasite can preserve the common operating conditions while feeding on rare emergency states, particular frequencies, one drug concentration, or signals that carry a specific meaning.

The diamond norm gives an operational measure for distinguishing quantum channels while allowing an ancillary system:

\|\mathcal E-\mathcal F\|_\diamond = \sup_\rho \left\| \left[ (\mathcal E-\mathcal F)\otimes\mathcal I \right](\rho) \right\|_1

The expression asks for the input, possibly entangled with an ancilla, that best distinguishes two candidate channels in a single use.

Investigators do not need to calculate a diamond norm at the table. They need its experimental lesson: a system can look healthy under familiar tests while differing sharply on a carefully chosen input. Channel diagnosis calls for diverse interventions designed to expose the suspected failure.

A Parasite in a fire-suppression system may pass every daily self-test and consume only the difference between “building burning” and “fire extinguished.”

Processes with memory

Many physical and biological processes cannot be captured as a single isolated input-output map. Earlier interventions change the environment, which later feeds back into the system. These are non-Markovian memory effects.

The process-tensor framework represents multi-time processes operationally by specifying how sequences of interventions map to later outcomes. Schematically,

\rho_k = \mathcal T_{k:0} [\mathcal A_{k-1},\ldots,\mathcal A_0]

where

\mathcal A_j

are interventions at different times and

\mathcal T_{k:0}

holds the process and its memory.

Causal Parasites exploit these temporal structures. A specimen may feed only after a channel has learned a history:

  • A medication stops working after a run of successful doses.
  • A trained response fails only once the warning becomes familiar.
  • A machine loses output only after predictive maintenance confirms its reliability.
  • A detector records the calibration signals and ignores the event those calibrations were meant to catch.

The organism’s own stored effects create still more memory. Removing it may release outcomes in the order they were consumed, long after their original causes.

Conservation has to close somewhere

An electric motor producing less work should draw less power, heat more strongly, alter its electromagnetic fields, or move energy through some other measurable route. A projectile losing momentum has to transfer it. A chemical intervention that binds normally while producing no downstream response has to change some other physical state.

Any honest diagnosis performs the accounting:

\Delta E_{\mathrm{input}} = \Delta E_{\mathrm{system}} + \Delta E_{\mathrm{environment}}

and the same for momentum, charge, and the other conserved quantities where they apply.

Information accounting is subtler, because information depends on distinguishability and correlation rather than serving as one universal conserved scalar. Unitary evolution preserves the full quantum information in a closed system, while an open subsystem can lose accessible information into its environment.

An infested process looks open to an environment that local instruments cannot find. The Parasite’s projected organs may reveal the missing load later. A specimen feeding on braking grows dense and hard to accelerate. One feeding on combustion becomes hot. One feeding on neural response carries electrical and biochemical gradients that match the absent behavior.

The Tindalosian axiom

A Causal Parasite can insert an angular subsystem into an otherwise ordinary physical channel. The subsystem captures intervention-dependent energy, momentum, correlations, and state distinguishability, storing them as projected anatomy or exporting them through angular time.

This supplies a hidden environment that can close the full accounting while staying inaccessible to local curved-space measurement.

The organism obeys four limitations.

A real channel is required

The Parasite needs a physical mechanism connecting intervention to outcome. It cannot consume metaphorical causation, narrative significance, bad luck, moral responsibility, or any consequence the Handler happens to find convenient.

Familiarity improves feeding

Repeated operation lets the animal work out which degrees of freedom carry the intervention difference. Reliable engineered systems grow easier to parasitize over time.

Stored effects shape anatomy

Captured influence has to stay encoded somewhere until export. The body takes on mass, heat, charge, chemical response, information-bearing tissue, or some other measurable property that suits its diet.

Release remains physical

Disgorged effects need compatible carriers and targets. Stored momentum can launch matter. Stored receptor activation can affect compatible tissue. An unheard warning cannot become an explosion unless the parasite also holds a physical explosive channel.

Appearance

A detached Parasite looks like a flattened pale arthropod wrapped around a translucent central organ. Its body length runs from twenty centimeters to two meters depending on how much effect it has accumulated.

Attached specimens are hard to see, because much of their anatomy lives in the transfer relation rather than in ordinary volume. Their visible structures appear at several stages of a mechanism at once:

  • Fine limbs around a switch and the device it controls.
  • Mouthparts in both a drug reservoir and the target tissue.
  • A translucent membrane stretched between a weapon and its impact site.
  • Repeating segments at every relay in a communication network.
  • A dense abdominal knot beside a bearing, brake, valve, or receptor cluster.

The central organ holds moving physical analogues of consumed outcomes. Sparks cross tissue without voltage. Muscles contract with nothing to attach to. Dense pellets circulate without inertia until they are released. Human-shaped neural patterns perform actions their original subjects failed to take.

Color and texture follow diet. Mechanical feeders grow mineralized and dark. Thermal feeders glow beneath translucent tissue. Biological feeders resemble vascular plaques or folded membranes. Informational feeders develop patterned eyes, conductive whiskers, and vocal structures.

Ecology

Causal Parasites favor habitats rich in dependable mechanisms. Industrial systems, hospitals, laboratories, vehicles, weapons, trained organizations, and automated safety equipment all offer repeated high-contrast intervention channels.

They may arrive with Hounds as symbionts. Manifestation in curved space forces angular anatomy through unfamiliar geometry, linear time, entropy, and mechanical strain. A Parasite attached between curvature stress and tissue damage can absorb some of the consequences that would otherwise shatter the Hound’s projected body.

The arrangement extends the manifestation. The parasite piles up fracture, heat, pressure, and pain. A heavily burdened specimen shows up as a dense knot along the Hound’s spine or limbs.

Remove it and you can release those consequences into the Hound, the room, or the investigators doing the extraction.

Erasers benefit indirectly when infested record systems fail to produce new Historical Support. Cleaners may consume the relationships needed to diagnose the missing effect. Boltzmann Flies gather around major exports, carrying fragmentary memories of outcomes the Parasite prevented.

The relationship with Worldline Leeches is competitive. A Leech needs particular events to cause a reachable future. A Causal Parasite feeding on those links forces the Leech to spend extra correction budget or abandon the host.

The Causal Graph

For play, draw a compact directed graph of the important mechanisms in the scene. Each edge connects a Cause to an Effect through a named physical Carrier.

Assign each edge Influence from 1 to 3.

InfluenceReliability and consequenceExample
1Weak, noisy, or minorSwitch illuminates a lamp
2Reliable and consequentialDrug controls a dangerous symptom
3Critical and strongly coupledBrakes stop a vehicle; detonator fires a charge

Write the expected physical accounting beside the edge: energy, momentum, signal, chemical change, or behavioral carrier.

Infestation

An attached Parasite begins with access to one edge. Whenever the cause occurs, it may feed. A successful feeding removes 1 Influence and grants Effect Charges equal to the removed point’s original Rating.

At Influence 2, the outcome is delayed, weakened, or intermittent. At Influence 1, it works only under favorable conditions. At Influence 0, the cause still occurs while the named effect fails through that route.

Influence loss is specific. Brakes may lose mechanical deceleration while regenerative braking still works. An antibiotic may keep one biochemical action while failing to suppress bacterial growth. A warning light may illuminate while its trained human response disappears.

Effect Charges

Record every charge by type:

  • Momentum
  • Heat
  • Electrical work
  • Chemical action
  • Physiological response
  • Signal distinguishability
  • Trained behavior
  • Measurement record

Charges fuel the Parasite’s attacks and powers. Incompatible types cannot substitute freely.

Expanding the graph

After consuming an edge, the Parasite can follow the Carrier to an adjacent edge. Repeated operation lets it infest feedback loops and backups. Systems that share sensors, power, software, operators, tissue, or training may be adjacent despite being physically separated.

Competent investigation reveals those dependencies. The Handler should not invent hidden shared carriers after the group establishes genuine independence.

Diagnosing infestation

Establish the intervention

Show that changing the suspected cause should change the outcome. Use controlled trials and appropriate skills: Science, Engineering, Medicine, Pharmacy, Computer Science, SIGINT, Forensics, or a relevant profession.

Instrument the carrier

Measure the intermediate stages. One success clears a healthy segment or identifies a deficit. Several methods with different physical principles keep the Parasite from hiding inside one shared sensor family.

Close the accounting

Track energy, momentum, charge, chemical products, and records. Two successful tests identify the missing quantity’s type. A third locates the attached projected organ.

Vary the input

Test rare, emergency, reversed, low-amplitude, and high-amplitude conditions. A critical success finds the input that most clearly separates the infested channel from the healthy model.

Each destructive or high-energy test gives the Parasite a chance to feed. Diagnosis means balancing information against nutrition.

Attacks

Channel bite 50%, damage 1D8. The Parasite strikes with organs adapted from its current diet. On a critical success, it identifies one reliable cause-effect edge involving the target.

Interposition 70%, costs 2 WP. Used as a reaction when a known cause would produce an effect through an infested edge. Reduce the effect by one Influence step and gain the appropriate Effect Charges. The originating action still succeeds. Its missing consequence becomes observable evidence.

Disgorged effect 60%, spends 1 to 3 matching Charges. Release a stored outcome through a compatible target or carrier. One Charge inflicts 1D6 damage or an equivalent minor effect. Two Charges inflict 2D8 or disable suitable equipment. Three Charges produce Lethality 15%; on a failed Lethality roll, add the percentile dice for damage.

Causal anesthesia 60%, opposed by POW, costs 3 WP. The target performs one intended physical action while its immediate trained or physiological consequence is consumed. A shooter pulls the trigger without completing the aim correction. A medic recognizes a symptom without starting treatment. Success costs the target 1D6 WP and suppresses one declared response for one turn. The power requires a previously observed response channel.

Powers

Channel Attachment: Spend 2 WP after touching any stage of a mapped Carrier. The Parasite occupies its edge and becomes RESILIENT against Lethal Damage. Removing it requires Closed Accounting, physical isolation of the carrier, or saturation.

Channel Transit: Spend 2 WP to move between adjacent nodes on the Causal Graph. The organism vanishes from one carrier and emerges at another without crossing intervening space. Severing the carrier blocks transit only when the system cannot route through a backup.

Effect Metabolism: Stored Charges modify the projected body. Three Momentum Charges grant +4 STR and 2 Armor. Three Heat Charges make contact inflict 1D4 damage. Three Signal Charges grant Stealth 90% against electronic observation. Three Physiological Charges grant +20% to affect compatible living tissue. The bonuses end when those Charges are spent.

Selective Appetite: The Parasite may let routine tests pass while feeding on a defined rare input. Investigators gain +20% when they test a condition outside the system’s normal self-check procedure.

Non-Markovian Reservoir: The Parasite remembers the last three intervention sequences used on an infested process. Repeating one gives it +20% to Interposition. A genuinely novel sequence removes this bonus and may expose a hidden organ.

Angular Export: At the end of a scene, spend 3 WP to export up to three Charges and recover 1D6 HP. Export creates heat, broadband noise, phase anomalies, and a temporary rise in local Boltzmann Fly Density. Exported effects cannot be recovered by killing the specimen.

Rupture: When reduced to 0 HP, release every stored Charge through the nearest compatible carriers. Resolve the highest three-Charge group first. Remaining Charges produce environmental damage, involuntary physiological responses, false records, or sudden machinery activation. Careful extraction before death can drain Charges individually.

Countermeasures

Closed Accounting

Use diverse instruments to find where the physical ledger fails. Three successful relevant tests expose the Parasite, remove its RESILIENT status, and prevent Channel Transit for one scene.

Decoy channel

Build a strong repeatable cause-effect mechanism whose output can safely be lost. A successful Engineering, Science, Computer Science, Medicine, or Unnatural test creates an Influence 2 lure. A critical success creates Influence 3. Failure introduces a shared carrier leading back to the protected system.

Saturation

Feed the Parasite repeated small effects of one type until it holds at least three matching Charges. Its anatomy specializes and becomes visible. It cannot consume further Charges of that type until one is spent or exported.

Saturation is dangerous when the stored effect can harm personnel. Momentum, heat, and physiological responses need prepared sinks.

Reverse protocol

Some laboratory, chemical, computational, and mechanical processes have physically meaningful reverse operations. A successful relevant test drives one stored Charge back through its carrier and restores 1 Influence.

Reversing symbols, video, or narrative order does nothing unless the underlying physical dynamics are actually reversed.

Carrier isolation

Break the channel into independently monitored stages. Mechanical disconnects, optical isolators, air gaps, metabolic blockers, and human procedural separation can strand the organism in one segment.

Controlled extraction

Once it is exposed, opposed Surgery, Engineering, Medicine, Science, or Unnatural tests can remove the Parasite. Each success drains one Charge into a prepared sink. Failure releases one Charge. A fumble triggers Rupture.

Practices that make everything worse

  • Repeating the standard self-test teaches the Parasite which outcomes it can safely return.
  • Adding backups that share sensors, power, software, operators, or tissue only extends the same infested graph.
  • Increasing input energy supplies a larger effect without necessarily improving diagnosis.
  • Treating a successful action as a failed roll hides the evidence the players need.
  • Killing a saturated specimen releases its stored outcomes with no one choosing the carriers.
  • Removing an attached Hound symbiont can dump years of accumulated manifestation trauma back in seconds.
  • Automating every intervention hands the organism a predictable sequence to learn.
  • Assuming information loss violates energy conservation confuses several different physical quantities and blocks proper accounting.

Running Causal Parasites fairly

  • Draw the important Causal Graph before the infestation expands.
  • Name each Carrier and its expected physical accounting.
  • Announce the successful cause before you describe the missing effect.
  • Identify which edge lost Influence.
  • Track Charges by physical type.
  • Let controlled interventions reveal the organism.
  • Respect independent backups when the players genuinely create them.
  • Require compatible carriers for released effects.
  • Keep exported Charges unrecoverable and unexported Charges dangerous.
  • Do not treat metaphor, coincidence, or plot consequence as a causal channel.

The creature rewards experimental reasoning. Cancelling successful actions at random would reduce it to a permission slip for the Handler to ignore the rules.

Compact incident: Braking distance

The depot Parasite begins attached to the edge

\text{brake-cylinder force} \longrightarrow \text{wheel friction} \longrightarrow \text{deceleration}

That edge started at Influence 3 and has fallen to 0. The animal holds six Momentum Charges, three Heat Charges, and two Measurement Record Charges. It has exported nothing.

Routine brake tests pass because they measure cylinder pressure and pad travel without ever placing the locomotive under realistic load. The Parasite returns those minor outputs and feeds only when friction should change the vehicle’s motion.

Investigators can put the locomotive on a dynamometer, measure torque at the axle, instrument pad temperature independently, and compare mechanical work against electrical input. Three successes perform Closed Accounting and reveal the animal around the relay plate.

They can saturate it with low-energy friction cycles, isolate the brake command and mechanical assemblies, and drain Momentum into a flywheel before extraction. Kill it beside stationary rolling stock and it releases enough stored motion to turn the depot into a collision field.

The specimen also holds one trained behavioral response. During the derailment, Nwosu saw a worker on the track and turned the locomotive away. The Parasite had consumed the difference between recognition and evasive action, and yet Nwosu acted anyway.

Something else supplied the response.

The worker’s personnel file belongs to a man removed by an Eraser six months earlier.

Scenario hooks

The successful treatment

A hospital’s infusion pumps deliver correct doses. Drug levels, receptor binding, and metabolism all look normal. The patients receive none of the expected therapeutic effect, while a vascular organism beneath the pharmacy gains resistance to every medication administered upstairs.

The silent evacuation

An alarm system passes every electrical and acoustic test. During emergencies, occupants hear and understand it and stay seated. The infestation lives between recognition and trained response.

Dead-man circuit

A nuclear safety mechanism consumes power, moves every actuator, and leaves the reactor state unchanged. The Parasite feeds only on interventions capable of shutting the plant down.

Pain bearer

A captured Hound tolerates curved-space manifestation with no visible injury. A dense parasite runs along its spine, carrying fractures, heat, hypoxia, and neural trauma. Removing it may free the Hound while transferring the entire accumulated effect into the containment room.

The unloaded weapon

Several shootings produce muzzle flash, recoil, recovered bullets, and no wounds. A Parasite storing ballistic effects has started hunting for a carrier that can release them all in one direction.

Field classification

CAUSAL PARASITE Type: Angular channel-infesting organism and Hound symbiont Habitat: Reliable engineered, biological, behavioral, and informational processes Diet: Intervention-dependent energy, momentum, physiological response, and output distinguishability Behavior: Learns a channel, attenuates its expected effect, stores the missing difference, and expands through adjacent carriers Movement principle: Transit along mapped cause-carrier-effect relationships Primary sign: A verified cause occurs while both its expected effect and its ordinary physical dissipation are absent Containment principle: Vary interventions, close physical accounting, isolate carriers, saturate one effect type, and drain stored Charges before extraction Critical hazard: Killing the organism releases unexported consequences through whatever compatible carriers happen to be nearby

Where the science ends

Interventionist causal reasoning, quantum channels, trace distance, channel discrimination, the diamond norm, data-processing inequalities, open-system dilation, non-Markovian memory, and process tensors all belong to real physics and causal theory.

Real attenuation requires physical interaction. Energy and momentum have to be accounted for, and lost access to information ordinarily means correlation with an environment or a discarded subsystem. Trace-distance contraction does not imply that a creature has eaten causation. Process tensors model multi-time operational statistics; they do not provide habitats between events.

Known physics offers no angular subsystem able to occupy a macroscopic channel, export conserved quantities outside local accounting, metabolize intervention distinguishability, or replay a withheld outcome through another carrier.

The Tindalosian axiom supplies those mechanisms. Influence, Effect Charges, Channel Transit, and Rupture are fictional consequences built for Cthulhu Eternal play.

Final accounting

The team isolated the depot Parasite and drained its stored momentum into a flywheel. Heat went into a ceramic sink. False instrument records filled three disconnected drives.

One Charge remained. No instrument could identify its type.

Nwosu approached the extraction table. The Parasite turned toward her and made the emergency-brake gesture with two folded limbs.

She remembered the worker on the track. She remembered deciding to turn. She remembered the locomotive obeying.

The parasite opened its central organ.

Across the depot, every machine responded to the command she had never completed.
