The Many-Hounded Thing

Branch-injury report MH-27, with Cthulhu Eternal statistics

The team was sure the procedure had picked the one Hound capable of beating it. The strain gauges told a worse story. The projected animal had simply tried to reach the record that tied it to the room, and the containment shell happened to be in the way. The shell was not defeating the Hound. The shell was teaching it how to breach.

Four humane procedures

Project Orison was built to find a less violent way of releasing manifested Hounds.

The research team prepared four mutually exclusive procedures inside a reversible control system. No procedure would be amplified into an ordinary record until the system had evaluated how each one interacted with the angular field.

Procedure A opened the southern test corridor and moved the primary witness away from the manifestation chamber.

Procedure B sealed the chamber inside three independently founded shells.

Procedure C reactivated the witness’s memory and began the Unremembering.

Procedure D flooded the chamber with enough thermal energy to destroy the projected body before it reached stable anatomy.

The controller encoded each procedure coherently. Its output qubits stayed isolated from staff, storage, and the facility network. Phase checks confirmed that the interference between the control alternatives was still measurable.

At 02:14, the angular field coupled to all four control states.

Procedure A acquired a projected skeleton stretched along the southern corridor. Its vertebrae separated farther with every meter assigned to the fleeing witness.

Procedure B acquired a broad body inside the innermost shell. Its forelimbs thickened until the joints split. Each new containment layer appeared beneath its skin as another load-bearing plate.

Procedure C acquired no body in the chamber. Neural monitoring found a second pattern growing through the witness’s reactivated memory. Every recalled detail handed it another sensory surface.

Procedure D acquired a blackened animal whose interior stayed blue-white on the thermal model. It kept producing heat after the simulated energy pulse ended.

None of these results should have been available to a human observer. The controller had never measured which procedure occurred.

The four output registers began printing anyway.

Project lead Mira Solano saw the pages and ordered Procedure B.

The southern skeleton disappeared. The mnemonic pattern vanished from the witness. The thermal body stopped emitting.

Something struck the innermost shell hard enough to move its foundation eleven centimeters.

The team believed the procedure had selected the Hound capable of defeating it.

High-speed strain gauges showed a different sequence. The projected animal first tried to reach the observation record connecting it to the room. The shell lay between them. Its body thickened only where the barrier forced curved-space load through its angular skeleton.

The shell itself was forcing the projected animal to develop breaching anatomy.

Classification

The Many-Hounded Thing is an iatrogenic manifestation syndrome produced when one angular organism is coupled to several mutually exclusive macroscopic boundary conditions before those alternatives decohere.

Each condition forces a different curved-space projection. One grows long enough to follow a moving tether. Another develops enough support to survive confinement pressure. A third projects through neural records because memory has become the localization channel. A fourth acquires tissue capable of staying coherent during an attempted sterilization.

Human observers meet a different Hound in each outcome and infer a family of specialized pursuers. The complete angular state joins those bodies as one organism subjected to several incompatible forms of finite embodiment.

The syndrome requires deliberate apparatus, ritual, or a rare angular habitat capable of maintaining coherent alternatives at macroscopic scale. Ordinary human indecision does not produce an Outcome Fan. Choosing between two doors during a chase will not create two monsters unless some physical system has already preserved and coupled those choices as alternative boundary conditions.

The Many-Hounded Thing is neither a Hound species nor a colony. It is one Hound undergoing several experimental injuries at once.

Measurement creates correlations

Begin with a system prepared in a superposition

|\psi\rangle = \sum_i c_i|s_i\rangle

An idealized measurement interaction correlates the system with an apparatus initially in state |A_0\rangle:

\left(\sum_i c_i|s_i\rangle\right)|A_0\rangle \longrightarrow \sum_i c_i|s_i\rangle|A_i\rangle

The environment then becomes correlated with the alternatives:

|\Psi\rangle = \sum_i c_i |s_i\rangle |A_i\rangle |E_i\rangle

When the environmental states become effectively orthogonal,

\langle E_i|E_j\rangle \approx0 \qquad i\neq j

the interference terms become locally inaccessible. Tracing over the environment gives an approximately diagonal reduced state:

\rho_{SA} \approx \sum_i|c_i|^2 |s_i,A_i\rangle \langle s_i,A_i|

This is decoherence. It explains why macroscopic alternatives stop displaying accessible interference and why records settle into stable classical correlations.

Conscious awareness has no special role. A detector, a page, an air molecule, a thermal field, or a human nervous system can carry the relevant record.

Relative states and interpretation

Everett’s relative-state formulation keeps unitary evolution for the entire composite state. Relative to an apparatus record A_i, the system has the corresponding state s_i. Later many-worlds interpretations describe the effectively decohered components as branches.

The formalism and the interpretation have to stay distinct.

Decoherence is experimentally grounded. Relative-state or many-worlds ontology is one way of interpreting the universal state. Other interpretations account for definite outcomes differently. Existing experiments do not establish that visible universes literally split whenever somebody makes a decision.

The phrase “every possible outcome contains a different pursuer” is an in-world description of the Orison syndrome, and it sits outside anything quantum mechanics predicts.

Histories rather than snapshots

The syndrome concerns extended procedures, so histories give a better mathematical language than isolated outcomes.

For a coarse-grained history

\alpha = (\alpha_1,\alpha_2,\ldots,\alpha_n)

define a class operator schematically as

C_\alpha = P_{\alpha_n}(t_n) P_{\alpha_{n-1}}(t_{n-1}) \cdots P_{\alpha_1}(t_1)

Given an initial state \rho, the decoherence functional is

D(\alpha,\beta) = \mathrm{Tr} \left( C_\alpha\rho C_\beta^\dagger \right)

A suitably coarse-grained family of histories can be assigned ordinary probabilities once the interference between distinct histories is negligible:

D(\alpha,\beta) \approx0 \qquad \text{for }\alpha\neq\beta

Project Orison tries to delay that condition for macroscopic containment histories. Each history includes a procedure, an environment, an observer record, and a Hound boundary condition. The apparatus keeps their mutual coherence alive long enough for the angular field to occupy all of them.

Known physics gives no practical route to maintaining coherent people, corridors, clinical procedures, and thermal destruction systems as one controllable superposition. Environmental interactions decohere such alternatives with overwhelming speed.

That impossibility marks the fictional machinery clearly.

Born weight is not a head count

The coefficients c_i determine Born weights

w_i=|c_i|^2, \qquad \sum_iw_i=1

for orthogonal alternatives in the usual measurement setting.

A larger weight means a larger probability for the corresponding outcome under standard operational predictions. It does not mean that physicists have counted more universes in that alternative. Branch number has no unique definition under realistic decoherence, where branching is approximate, continuous, and dependent on coarse-graining.

The game uses Branch Weight as a measure of how strongly Orison’s apparatus couples one procedure to the projected Hound. It affects stability and selection probability. The number is an operational property of the prepared alternatives, not a census of worlds.

The Tindalosian axiom

The article adds one fictional premise:

An angular organism can remain one biological system across several coherently maintained macroscopic histories. When each history imposes a different curved-space boundary condition, the organism develops a corresponding local projection in every alternative while keeping one shared angular integrity.

This premise has three consequences.

First, every projected anatomy is constrained by the physical procedure in its history.

Second, the local projections cannot exchange controllable messages once their environmental records decohere. Their shared origin provides no cross-branch radio.

Third, injury accumulated across the projections feeds into one angular organism’s distress. A local observer sees only one source of that pain.

The Hound’s violent behavior follows the same rule established in The Tindalosian Observation Problem and Endlichwerden. It attacks records, observers, geometry, and machinery sustaining its localization. Different procedures place those tethers in different locations, which produces behavior that looks like outcome-specific hunting.

Adaptation without anticipation

The Outcome Fan does not let the Hound predict human strategy. The apparatus prepares a finite set of interactions, and each interaction forces an anatomy capable of taking part in it.

The distinction is like ordinary boundary-value reasoning. A structure under compression develops different stresses from one under tension. A field in one cavity supports different modes from the same field under other boundary conditions. No foresight is involved.

The speculative step applies that dependence to one living angular state.

Every capability has a physical cost. The Handler should describe the injury whenever the capability appears.

What the Hound experiences

Curved-time observers meet the projections one after another. Orison’s logs list Procedure A, Procedure B, Procedure C, and Procedure D as alternatives in a technical record.

The angular organism does not necessarily hold that ordering. The four projected bodies can belong to one extended biological state. Each body supplies incompatible location, anatomy, causal sequence, and method of injury. The complete organism is required to be fleeing, confined, remembered, and burned inside one experiment.

This grants it no human motives and no moral innocence. An animal in enough pain can destroy a facility and everyone inside it. The alien perspective explains the direction of the violence without making the consequences any less lethal.

Preparing an Outcome Fan

The Handler writes an Outcome Fan before the relevant decision enters play. It holds two to four Alternative Cards. Four is the ordinary maximum for one adult Hound and one human-built branch apparatus.

Each Alternative Card holds:

FieldPurpose
ProcedureThe materially distinct intervention prepared by the apparatus
AmplifierThe system that will turn the alternative into a durable record
TetherThe observer, record, boundary, or mechanism holding the projection finite
AspectThe anatomy forced by that procedure
CapabilityOne mechanical advantage arising from that anatomy
InjuryOne weakness created by the same deformation
WeightA rating from 1 to 3 representing relative coupling strength

At least one physical warning sign has to reveal each Aspect before selection. Players need enough evidence to infer that the alternatives are shaping the body.

The Handler cannot add a card after the group commits to an action. A response materially outside every prepared Procedure is an Off-Basis Action.

Branch Weight

Assign each Alternative a Weight from 1 to 3. The total Weight of the Fan should usually equal 6.

WeightProjection stateMechanical effect
1Weakly coupledAspect has 10 HP, 2 Armor, and suffers −20% on its specialized action
2StableUse the listed Aspect profile without modification
3DominantAspect gains 4 HP, 2 Armor, and +20% on its specialized action

If the apparatus selects probabilistically, draw among the Alternatives in proportion to Weight. The group may alter Weights before amplification through relevant Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or Unnatural tests.

One success transfers 1 Weight between two Alternatives while keeping every Weight at least 1. A critical success can reduce one Alternative to 0 and remove it from the Fan. Failure leaves the distribution unchanged. A fumble adds 1 Weight to the procedure producing the greatest Projection Strain.

This manipulation changes probabilities. It never guarantees which result a single trial will produce.

Projection Strain

Track Projection Strain from 0 to 6 for the shared angular organism.

StrainManifestation
0One coherent angular state without macroscopic procedural coupling
1Two alternatives produce faint, incompatible outlines
2Each Aspect develops one functional organ
3Pain responses correlate across the Fan; all projections attack their local tethers
4Injury in one Alternative produces blue residue and mechanical stress in the others
5Local anatomy overlaps before outcome amplification; the apparatus begins recording several procedures at once
6Branch rupture forces incompatible Aspects into one curved-space volume

Initial Strain equals the number of Alternative Cards minus one. Add 1 when:

  • A new macroscopic procedure joins the coherent Fan.
  • One procedure imposes two incompatible terminal demands.
  • Staff extract a durable record from an unselected Aspect.
  • A projected body is injured while the alternatives are still coherent.
  • A human observer learns enough to distinguish all Aspects before amplification.

Reduce Strain by removing an Alternative coherently, severing one common tether, or completing a humane release path. Ordinary destruction of an output register after decoherence does not recombine histories.

At Strain 6, resolve Branch Rupture immediately.

Outcome selection

Selection occurs when one Alternative produces an irreversible environmental record. A person reading the output, a relay copying it, a room executing the procedure, or uncontrolled coupling to the environment may provide the amplifier.

The selected Aspect becomes the local projection. The other Aspects cease to be accessible from that history. They cannot communicate with the selected body, provide tactical knowledge, or enter as reinforcements.

The common angular organism keeps the Projection Strain it accumulated before selection. The current Aspect keeps attacking the Tether named on its card.

Destroying the local projection kills that finite body and costs the shared organism 6 WP. An unselected Aspect cannot replace it. A later manifestation requires the ordinary surviving Scent or a new Outcome Fan.

Off-Basis Actions

An Off-Basis Action changes the experiment in a way none of its Alternative Cards describe. It has to alter actual boundary conditions. Renaming a prepared procedure or choosing a cosmetic variation does nothing.

Examples include:

  • Staying in the chamber when every plan assumes evacuation or containment.
  • Opening the facility to the external environment when every card assumes a sealed laboratory.
  • Moving the primary record instead of the witness.
  • Replacing an attack with a delocalization protocol.
  • Using the branching controller itself as the physical exit.
  • Joining two roles that every procedure treats separately.

A successful relevant test prevents every specialized Aspect from stabilizing. Use the Raw Projection profile. Failure reveals which card still contains the action. A fumble amplifies that card immediately.

The group earns this advantage by understanding the Fan. Surprise phrasing on its own is not enough.

Invariant interventions

Some features are common to every Alternative: one power supply, one Hound record, one observer, one untreated corner, or one control register. An intervention applied identically across the whole coherent Fan can affect the shared angular organism.

The group first identifies an invariant with Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Search, SIGINT, or Unnatural. Acting on it before selection inflicts 1D6 WP damage on the Many-Hounded Thing and reduces Projection Strain by 1.

Useful invariant interventions include:

  • Disconnecting the common amplifier reversibly.
  • Moving the primary observer outside every prepared geometry.
  • Removing the boundary condition shared by all procedures.
  • Replacing one common Hound record with a low-information decoy.
  • Applying the same curved release path to every Alternative.

An attack directed at only one Aspect stays local to that history.

Attacks

Tether lunge 60%, damage 2D8, Armor Piercing 3. The local Aspect crosses the shortest physically available route toward its named Tether. On a critical success, it pins the Tether or its carrier and reduces the current manifestation’s Scent contribution by 1 after one uninterrupted round.

Projection fracture 50%, damage 1D10 and 1D4 WP. Broken angular anatomy closes across a target. At Projection Strain 4 or higher, the attack gains +20%, because injuries from other Aspects begin overlapping locally.

Branch Rupture, Lethality 20%. At Strain 6, incompatible limbs, organs, pressures, temperatures, and trajectories occupy the same volume. Everyone within 10 meters/yards tests against Lethality. On a failed Lethality roll, add the percentile dice for damage. The Hound also suffers that damage with Armor ignored, loses all Aspect benefits, and becomes a Raw Projection.

Aspect profiles

Apply one profile after the corresponding Alternative becomes local.

Pursuit Aspect

DEX +6, Movement 20, Armor −3. It gains Athletics 80% and may move before initiative during the first round. Changes of direction greater than 45 degrees require an Athletics test. Failure inflicts 1D6 damage as stretched lateral joints separate.

Breach Aspect

STR +8, DEX −6, Armor +3. Its Boundary Ram attack is 60%, Lethality 15% against structures and 10% against living targets. Sensory tests suffer −40%. Attacks directed through an opening behind or beneath the support plates ignore Armor.

Mnemonic Aspect

STR −10, POW +6, Armor 0. It occupies a reactivated memory rather than a stable room position. Engram Tear 60%, opposed POW, costs 3 WP removes one Hound-related Memory Anchor and inflicts 1D8 WP. Presenting an authentic external record forces it into visible Raw Projection for one round.

Thermal Aspect

CON +8, Armor 8 against heat and radiation. Contact inflicts 1D6 heat damage. Rapid cooling or energy withdrawal inflicts 2D8 damage with Armor ignored and prevents movement for one round.

Instrumental Aspect

Alertness and Search 90%, Armor 2. It automatically identifies shared measurement dependencies that have interacted with it. Each independent detector family successfully coupled to the body reduces its DEX and Armor by 1, to a minimum of 0.

Pressure Aspect

STR +4, Movement 14 through fluid, Armor 6. Hydraulic Fold 60%, damage 1D10 or Lethality 10% against sealed structures. In dry open air it loses 1D4 WP per round and becomes VULNERABLE.

Raw Projection

Use base Characteristics, Movement, and Skills. Armor becomes 0. The body loses RESILIENT status and cannot use a specialized attack. Every visible joint carries portions of the injuries imposed by the abandoned Alternatives.

Powers

Outcome-Indexed Projection: While the Outcome Fan stays coherent, each Alternative holds one procedure-specific body. Only the selected or actively instrumented Aspect can affect local characters. Unselected Aspects provide no tactical information.

Shared Angular Integrity: The Fan shares one WP pool and one Projection Strain rating. An Invariant Intervention damages shared WP. Local HP damage affects only the current projection.

Boundary-Forced Anatomy: An Aspect gains only the capability written on its card. New player tactics do not produce spontaneous adaptations after selection. A later modification requires a new coherent Alternative and increases Strain.

Tether Recognition: The Hound automatically locates the Tether named by the selected card within the current Access Network. It gains no knowledge of unrelated people, plans, or records.

Pain Across Alternatives: At Strain 3 or higher, damage to one instrumented Aspect costs the shared organism 1 additional WP. At Strain 5, it also triggers one Projection Fracture in every currently amplified procedure.

Desperate Delocalization: With the selected Tether reduced below recoverable threshold, the Hound may spend all remaining WP and leave curved space. Its local body collapses into blue residue, heat, and damaged records. If prevented, it gains +20% to all attacks against the Tether and loses 1D4 HP each round.

Failed SAN tests

When a SAN test involving the Many-Hounded Thing fails, choose or roll an effect:

  1. The Protagonist refuses to discuss plans aloud and treats every contingency as a body being prepared for the Hound.
  2. The Protagonist becomes convinced that an unchosen version of them is still suffering elsewhere.
  3. The Protagonist compulsively searches every defense for the injury it would impose on an attacker.
  4. The Protagonist tries to remove options from other people, believing fewer choices mean fewer victims.
  5. The Protagonist identifies with one unselected Hound Aspect and feels its injuries as phantom pain.
  6. The Protagonist tries to create a release outcome with no regard for anyone occupying the selected history.

Countermeasures

Map the Fan

Identify each Procedure, Amplifier, Tether, Aspect, Injury, and Weight. One successful relevant investigation reveals one field. Instrument readings have to provide concrete evidence. A success never creates a new Alternative.

Once every card has at least four known fields, the group may attempt Off-Basis Actions and Invariant Interventions without penalty.

Remove alternatives coherently

Reverse one preparation before its output reaches the environment. A successful Science, Computer Science, Engineering, or Unnatural test removes the card and reduces Strain by 1. Failure leaves it in the Fan. A fumble amplifies the partial procedure and adds 1 Strain.

Deleting a classical record after amplification does not restore interference.

Build a release branch

Prepare one Alternative whose boundary conditions let the Hound delocalize: reduce Scent, open compatible angular geometry, remove active observation, and prevent redundant recording.

Three successful actions create the card at Weight 1. Further successes can transfer Weight toward it. Selecting the release branch makes the projection VULNERABLE for one round while it leaves.

The process may release other organisms sheltered in the same angular state.

Attack the invariant

Find a physical support common to every procedure and affect it identically before selection. This damages shared WP and can collapse the whole Fan without fighting every body.

Accept one injury

Choose the Aspect whose weakness offers a survivable local encounter, then amplify it deliberately. This abandons the other procedures and prevents Branch Rupture. The selected Hound stays dangerous, finite, and in pain.

Exhaust shared integrity

Repeated Invariant Interventions can drive the shared WP pool to 0. The Outcome Fan collapses into a Raw Projection, which can be killed or released through ordinary methods.

Practices that make the syndrome worse

  • Adding contingencies creates more projected injuries and raises Strain.
  • A quantum randomizer selects among the prepared cards; it does not create an unmodeled escape.
  • Reading every output makes the alternatives more distinguishable and can trigger Branch Rupture.
  • Attacking one body does little to the shared angular state unless the intervention is invariant.
  • Building defenses after seeing an Aspect can create another coherent procedure if the controller is still active.
  • Treating Born Weight as a number of universes confuses the physics and encourages meaningless branch arithmetic.
  • Assuming an unselected Hound can pass tactics to the selected one grants a power absent from both real theory and the fictional axiom.
  • Trying to recombine full macroscopic histories after environmental amplification mistakes destroyed paperwork for erased which-way information.

Running the Outcome Fan fairly

  • Write every Alternative Card before presenting the decision.
  • Cap the ordinary Fan at four cards.
  • Telegraph one physical sign for every Aspect.
  • Give each capability a related injury.
  • Refuse retroactive countermeasures for unlisted player actions.
  • Let a genuinely Off-Basis Action produce a Raw Projection.
  • Keep unselected Aspects unable to act after selection.
  • Track shared WP separately from local HP.
  • Let a release branch work when its conditions are satisfied.
  • Describe violence as movement toward a Tether unless the individual Hound has separate evidence of predatory feeding.

The system should reward investigators who understand the experiment. It should never let the Handler claim that another universe holds a Hound prepared for every idea.

Compact incident: Project Orison

Orison’s Outcome Fan begins with four cards, each at Projection Strain 3 before staff observe the outputs.

Southern evacuationCorridor timing arrayWitness trajectory2Pursuit Aspect; cannot turn without fracturing
Triple-shell containmentFoundation strain recordObservation archive outside the shell2Breach Aspect; blind behind its support plates
UnrememberingClinician’s elicited accountReactivated engram and physician1Mnemonic Aspect; external records force local embodiment
Thermal destructionCalorimeter archiveHeat-resistant tissue record1Thermal Aspect; rapid cooling breaks the projection

Solano’s observation amplifies triple-shell containment. The Breach Aspect becomes local at Weight 2. Strain stays at 4, because reading the unselected outputs produced durable records before selection completed.

The Hound attacks the observation archive beyond the shells. Breaking the barrier is a mechanical consequence of reaching that Tether. Personnel between the animal and the archive stay in lethal danger.

The controller, primary witness, angular field source, and master clock are invariants. Disabling the controller irreversibly would amplify its last state. A reversible shutdown takes three successful technical actions. Moving the archive into the chamber changes the Tether route and lets the Hound reach it without breaching the outer shells.

The team can fight the Breach Aspect, attack the invariant control system, or reconstruct the release procedure the researchers left out because its outcome provided no useful experimental data.

Operations

Contingency engine

A defense agency feeds every proposed response to a coherent planning system before approving it. Hound-shaped strain shows up in each plan’s resource model. The system has prepared seventeen Alternatives by spreading them across separate facilities, and nobody realizes they share one angular state.

Mercy trial

Researchers compare four methods of releasing a Hound with minimal human casualties. Each method reduces one tether while strengthening another. The Hound experiences all four treatments, and the least harmful human outcome produces the most severe projected injury.

The unchosen patient

A hospital uses an angular controller to evaluate several surgeries before operating. One procedure becomes real. Imaging keeps the anatomical stress from the unselected operations, each one accompanied by a different Hound organ trying to remove the corresponding medical record.

Branch shelter

A cult prepares several histories in which different members become the primary witness. The goal is to spread the Hound’s attack among sacrificial alternatives. Every Aspect recognizes the same child as the only invariant observer.

The humane weapon

A laboratory has learned to force Hounds into specialized bodies by preparing hostile Outcome Fans. It sells the selected projections as weapons adapted to particular targets. The animals attack the target records exactly as designed, injuring everyone between themselves and release.

Ecological significance

Many-Hounded events reveal how easily human experimentation can manufacture apparent predation.

A Pursuit Aspect looks evolved to chase people. A Breach Aspect looks evolved to defeat architecture. A Mnemonic Aspect looks evolved to hunt thought. Each appearance may be a wound shaped by the procedure meant to stop it.

None of this rules out genuine predators in angular space. Zeno Predators, Erasers, Worldline Leeches, and other organisms may have evolved to feed across dimensional boundaries. Their ecology should be inferred from repeated feeding behavior, metabolic consequences, prey selection, and life history.

Hound violence calls for a different default interpretation. Observation creates the tether. Boundary conditions determine the body. Movement follows the systems maintaining localization. Predation remains possible in individual cases, but pursuit alone does not establish it.

The distinction will matter on Day 30, when the larger ecology places Hounds among organisms that use them, clean them, shelter them, scavenge them, reproduce around them, and hunt them.

Where the science ends

Unitary measurement models, entanglement, environmental decoherence, reduced density operators, relative states, Born weights, class operators, decoherence functionals, and consistent histories all belong to real quantum theory.

The science imposes several restrictions. Observation is physical interaction. Decoherence does not require consciousness. Many-worlds ontology is interpretive rather than an experimental conclusion. Born weights are not counts of universes. Decohered branches do not exchange controllable messages. Macroscopic alternatives cannot ordinarily be preserved and recombined after their records disperse through the environment.

Project Orison, coherent macroscopic procedures, Outcome Fans, one animal sharing biological integrity across histories, cross-alternative pain, and boundary conditions growing specialized Hound bodies are all fictional.

The invented premise preserves the real relational structure. Each projection stays correlated with its procedure. The apparatus has to define the alternatives before selection. Unselected bodies cannot advise the selected body. New tactics do not retroactively create adaptations. Environmental amplification closes access to interference.

Those restrictions keep the Many-Hounded Thing alien, tragic, and playable.

Final report

Solano ordered the observation archive moved into the inner chamber.

The Breach Aspect stopped striking the shell.

It crossed the room on limbs too dense to bend and placed its fractured head against the archive cabinet. The first bite destroyed the output identifying Procedure B. The second reached the master record linking the chamber to all four procedures.

As the paper tore, strain gauges registered the Pursuit Aspect folding back toward a corridor it no longer needed to cross. Neural monitors recorded the Mnemonic Aspect releasing the witness. The thermal model fell dark.

For eleven seconds, the local body became narrow, armored, translucent, and incandescent across overlapping regions. Every injury Orison had designed passed through the same animal.

Solano initiated the omitted procedure.

The omitted procedure opened no door, fired no weapon, and altered no witness.

The archive stopped asking which body could survive what the humans planned to do next.

The Hound lost its final definite shape and left.
