Prospective pathology and terminal-bound organisms for Cthulhu Eternal
FORENSIC DIRECTIVE 10-F Do not assign a cause of death until the corresponding living organism has been located. Record what you observe. Preserve the alternatives. Keep what the remains physically establish separate from what the investigative team believes must have happened. A normal autopsy reconstructs a death. This autopsy is constructing one.
Prospective autopsy 10-04
- Decedent: unknown nonhuman organism, provisionally designated 10-04
- Recovery site: service void behind the eastern wall of Calder House, Level B2
- Recovery date: 11 September 2029, 06:42
- Estimated time of death: 17 September 2029, between 02:10 and 02:25
- Examiner: Dr. Mara Ilyan
The body was warm when we took it out of the wall. Core temperature 36.1°C. Rigor complete in the distal limbs, absent from the jaw and the axial musculature. Livor still mobile. No decomposition at all. The organism ran 2.31 metres from the anterior sensory surface to the final articulated segment. Its skeleton mixed radial and bilateral structures with no consistent developmental transition between them, and three major organ systems ended against smooth membranes instead of outlets; nothing in it could have supported independent respiration for more than a few minutes. Cellular examination, all the same, indicated about nineteen years of organized growth.
The fatal injury was a three-channel penetration entering beneath the fourth lateral plate. The wound tracks diverged by 14 degrees, crossed two vascular cavities, and converged on a structure I have provisionally called the heart. Every track contained the same industrial lubricant used in the hydraulic locks of Calder House Floodgate Four. Floodgate Four had not been installed. Its components were scheduled for delivery on 15 September. Tissue toxicology found an experimental paralytic designated RV-17, and the manufacturer’s records say batch RV-17-0929 would not finish quality testing until 16 September; no material from that batch existed yet outside the production reactor. The pulmonary cavities held concrete dust matching a corridor on Level B4, and construction of that corridor began three hours after we recovered the body. Human epithelial cells were lodged under two grasping structures. DNA identified them as mine.
At 12:09, while I was documenting the wound paths, security reported an organism coming out of the northwest junction on Level B2. It was alive. It had no wounds. When it was shown my face through the observation glass, it started trying to reach the morgue.
The corpse as a terminal boundary
The remains of a Born Dead organism are a terminal boundary exposed out of sequence. Humans normally meet a body after the life that made it,
With the Born Dead, the endpoint crosses into our environment before the projected life between has finished entering curved spacetime,
Along the organism’s own worldline, birth still comes before death. The inversion is entirely in the order that different parts of that worldline become accessible to us. So the prospective corpse is not a prophecy, a duplicate, a clone, a shed skin, or a time-travelling cadaver. It is the terminal cross-section of one continuous angular organism, and the living body can exist in curved space only along histories compatible with becoming those remains.
Initial and final conditions
Quantum mechanics describes transition amplitudes between states. Given an initial state at
and a final state
at
,
with transition probability
When an ensemble is both preselected in an initial state and postselected in a final one, the probabilities for an intermediate measurement can depend on both boundaries. For projectors onto the intermediate outcomes, the Aharonov–Bergmann–Lebowitz rule reads
This is a rule about conditional probabilities in pre- and postselected ensembles. It does not establish that a future corpse reaches back and manufactures its own birth. Postselection means looking at the subset of trials that later produced the selected outcome; it does not let an experimenter decree a macroscopic final state and force the universe to arrange it. Boundary-value formulations are not retrocausal by themselves, either: a whole solution can satisfy conditions at two boundaries without one boundary acting like a signal sent backward through time. Established physics stops well short of warm corpses from next week turning up inside walls.
The Tindalosian axiom
Some angular organisms project as worldlines constrained at both ends. Their initial living state and their terminal dead state jointly decide which intermediate curved-space histories have any real support. Let be a possible projected life history. Schematically,
The Born Dead does not pick one classical route and then run into whatever death happens to be waiting at the end of it. It occupies the whole set of histories connecting its emergence to a terminal condition that is already part of the angular organism’s complete structure. Human investigation changes the practical boundary by making features of the corpse stable, redundant, and recoverable. A vague wound allows many histories. A measured wound geometry, an identified lubricant, a unique instrument, a fixed location, and a named witness allow far fewer. Belief alone cannot make a future event more probable through an autopsy. What the autopsy does is build environmental records that eliminate terminal alternatives.
What “death permits birth” means
The Born Dead has no viable curved-space projection without a compatible endpoint. Its death is not just the event at the end of its life; it is one of the conditions that define the life as a whole. Keep the prospective corpse underdetermined and many projected lives can connect to it: the organism is unstable but flexible. Pin the corpse down precisely and the organism stabilizes, its anatomy grows coherent, its movements grow predictable, and its life gets harder and harder to divert from the documented end. Destroy every compatible terminal condition before a living projection stabilizes and the organism cannot be born here at all. Destroy them after it stabilizes and the organism starts losing causal support, though it does not simply wink out: its organs stop agreeing on developmental age, memories vanish from the middle, and its limbs become cross-sections of paths that no longer connect birth to death. From where we stand, destroying the corpse may save the creature from its assigned death. It may also erase the only reason the creature was ever alive.
Not a Palimpsest Hound
The distinction matters. A Palimpsest Hound is reconstructed from surviving evidence of an event that already happened; investigation supplies a coherent model its projection can be recovered from, and evidence becomes anatomy. The Born Dead is constrained by a terminal state whose death has not yet happened in local sequence; investigation does not rebuild its body, it eliminates lives that cannot end as the documented corpse.
| Palimpsest Hound | Born Dead |
|---|---|
| Evidence points backward to an erased encounter | Evidence points forward to an uncompleted death |
| Reconstruction adds recoverable functions | Terminal certainty removes incompatible futures |
| It attacks systems rebuilding it | It attacks systems fixing its endpoint |
| Destroying evidence prevents recurrence | Destroying terminal evidence may cause boundary failure |
| Certainty gives the Hound a body | Certainty gives the Born Dead a fate |
Both weaponize investigation. They just do it in opposite temporal directions.
Why it attacks the morgue
A Born Dead usually gets misread as a predator trying to destroy evidence of its crimes. Its real behaviour is closer to an animal working itself deeper into a tightening snare. It goes after the prospective corpse, the tissue samples and imaging taken from it, the pathologist who integrated the findings, the databases linking materials to future locations and instruments, objects identified as part of the terminal event, and witnesses whose memories make the death recoverable. It may destroy, alter, contaminate, or redistribute these records; it may swap the material in the wound, move the corpse, injure the designated witness, or arrange several plausible causes for the same pathology. Even a specimen too animal-like to understand forensic procedure can recognize terminal anchors as threats. It might chew through the morgue wall, carry off one preserved organ, and leave the intact body alone, because that one sample was the only record uniquely identifying the poison. Its attacks are more often about restoring uncertainty than about killing the investigators.
Prospective pathology
As the terminal conditions get fixed, the living projection starts showing signs of its own future remains.
Anticipatory lesions. Bruises form where restraints will later hold it. Tissue inflames along the shape of an instrument not yet applied. Scar remodeling begins around skin that is still unbroken.
Premature metabolites. The living organism carries metabolites of drugs it has not received, digestion products from food it has not eaten, and stress hormones fit for injuries it has not sustained. These usually sit below ordinary forensic thresholds until the relevant terminal condition becomes Probable or Fixed.
Terminal inventory. Foreign material found in the corpse starts appearing in the living organism’s surroundings. Concrete dust settles in its respiratory openings. Lubricant marks the surfaces it touches. Fibres from the future witness’s clothing turn up in its grasping structures.
Retrospective pain. The organism reacts to handling of the corpse. Cut the prospective body and the living projection may feel pain, weakness, or anatomical failure. This is not ordinary nerve transmission; both bodies are parts of one boundary-constrained worldline.
Causal rehearsal. At high Terminal Fit, people and objects start enacting partial versions of the terminal event. A witness reaches for the future weapon without knowing why. A door closes at the documented angle. The creature drops into the posture recorded at autopsy, then recovers. Every rehearsal is testing whether the environment can satisfy the boundary.
The Terminal Ledger
Track six terminal conditions. Each is Open, Probable, or Fixed.
| Condition | Question answered | Examples of evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Which living projection becomes the corpse? | DNA, anatomy, developmental defects, unique foreign bodies |
| Time | When does the terminal coincidence occur? | Tissue chemistry, angular timestamps, future-dated materials, decay states |
| Place | Where does the living body meet the terminal body? | Dust, pollen, architecture, pressure effects, embedded debris |
| Mechanism | What physiological failure causes death? | Wound paths, toxicology, exsanguination, neural disruption |
| Instrument | What object, organism, or process produces the mechanism? | Tool marks, lubricant, residue, geometry, energy signature |
| Witness | Who completes, observes, or makes the death recoverable? | Touch DNA, fibres, recordings, distinctive contamination, linked memory |
Open: the evidence allows several materially different answers, and gives no increase to Terminal Fit. Probable: one answer is favoured but at least one serious alternative survives; no increase to Terminal Fit, though it may throw weak prospective signs. Fixed: the physical record makes one answer uniquely recoverable across independent fragments; it increases Terminal Fit by 1 and switches on its effect. Prepare at least two plausible answers for every condition that starts Open. These are not decorative red herrings. If the investigators preserve them, the organism genuinely keeps both possible terminal histories.
A condition becomes Fixed only when all three of these are met. Observation: the investigators get reliable physical evidence. Exclusion: they eliminate the materially distinct alternatives. Synthesis: they preserve the conclusion in a recoverable model shared by at least one record or witness beyond the original clue. Skill tests provide observations, test exclusions, or validate relationships; they do not automatically fix conditions, and the GM has to tell the players when a proposed conclusion would Fix one, so investigation is not a trap sprung by competence. An autopsy report, a case conference, a synchronized database, a signed finding, a machine-readable model, or a deliberate occult measurement can do the synthesis. Privately thinking a weapon looks likely does not.
Terminal Fit
Terminal Fit equals the number of Fixed conditions.
| Fit | State | Manifestation |
|---|---|---|
| 0: Unassigned remains | No endpoint is definite enough | Only the corpse is stable; living signs are indirect |
| 1: Prospective echo | One terminal fact is fixed | The living organism emerges incompletely within 1D6 hours |
| 2: Causal recruitment | The endpoint has usable structure | Relevant people, materials, and locations start converging |
| 3: Coherent death model | Half the boundary is fixed | It senses terminal anchors and gains active defenses |
| 4: Narrowed life | Few compatible histories remain | Prospective injuries become visible; Final-State Armour strengthens |
| 5: Terminal convergence | One condition is still unresolved | Rehearsals happen; the environment tries to assemble the death |
| 6: Closed worldline | The terminal event is fully specified | It becomes completely stable and mortal in the documented way |
Whenever Fit rises, the living organism loses 1D4 WP and everyone watching a prospective change tests SAN at 0/1D4. At Fits 3 and 5, run a causal rehearsal.
Effects of fixed conditions
Identity: Terminal correspondence. The living organism and the corpse become demonstrably one body at different accessible portions of a worldline. Damage or alteration to the corpse does 1D4 to the living projection ignoring Armour, and healing the prospective corpse may restore the same amount once per injury.
Time: Countdown. The GM sets the terminal interval. The Born Dead always knows how much local time is left and gains +20% to actions that stop others from delaying, accelerating, or rescheduling the endpoint. If the fixed time passes without death, begin Boundary Failure.
Place: Terminal attraction. The organism, the designated witness, and the identified instrument all suffer converging accidents, routes, and institutional decisions dragging them toward the fixed place, and the Born Dead may use Endpoint Step along those relationships.
Mechanism: Selective mortality. Its physiology organizes around the fixed cause. It gains 4 more points of Final-State Armour against attacks that cannot produce that mechanism, and attacks matching the mechanism ignore the bonus.
Instrument: Instrument sense. It always knows the direction and rough distance to the designated instrument while that instrument is in ordinary space, and it can target the instrument through Terminal Seizure. Trying to destroy the instrument may make substitute objects with the same functional geometry Probable.
Witness: Drafted observer. It knows the witness’s direction and emotional state. The witness starts dreaming the terminal event and loses 1 WP after each full sleep until the condition is reopened or completed, and the Born Dead may use Draft the Witness on them anywhere within a kilometre.
Cthulhu Eternal statistics
This profile is a mature Born Dead once the living projection has emerged. At Fit 1 it has half HP and no attacks other than Unfinished Strike. At Fit 2 it has full HP. The other abilities switch on as described. Roll each specimen or use the typical column.
THE BORN DEAD, terminal-bound angular organism
| Characteristic | Roll | Typical |
|---|---|---|
| STR | 4D6+4 | 18 |
| CON | 4D6+4 | 18 |
| DEX | 3D6+5 | 15 |
| INT | 3D6+4 | 14 |
| POW | 4D6+6 | 20 |
| HP | (STR+CON)÷2 | 18 |
| WP | = POW | 20 |
Skills: Alertness 70%, Athletics 60%, Dodge 50%, Navigate 80%, Search 70%, Stealth 60%, Unarmed Combat 60%, Unnatural 50%.
Movement: 12 metres per turn.
Armour: Final-State Armour equal to twice Terminal Fit against damage inconsistent with every Fixed terminal condition. At Fit 4 that is 8; at Fit 6 it is 12. Matching terminal damage ignores it. Ordinary physical protection, if any, applies separately.
vs Lethal Damage: HIGHLY RESILIENT against a Lethal attack inconsistent with its Fixed terminal state. A successful Lethality roll does HP damage equal to the Lethality rating minus Final-State Armour rather than killing it. At Fit 6 it is NORMAL against a Lethal attack that satisfies the Fixed Mechanism, Instrument, Place, and Time.
Attacks:
Unfinished Strike 60%, damage 1D8. It uses projected limbs or surfaces that do not yet match the corpse perfectly. At Fit 1, damage is 1D6.
Prospective Wound 50%, opposed by CON, damage 1D6 ignoring ordinary Armour. The target develops an injury implied by a terminal rehearsal: restraint bruising, a puncture, a chemical burn, crushing trauma. The Born Dead spends 3 WP. If the target is the Fixed Witness, damage is 1D8 and they lose 1D4 WP.
Terminal Seizure 60%, opposed by STR or DEX. Instrument must be Fixed. The designated instrument, or something similar enough to still be a serious terminal alternative, moves up to 10 metres toward the organism. A held object may be kept on a successful opposed test. Used as an immediate attack, damage suits the object and costs 2 WP.
Draft the Witness 50%, opposed by POW. Witness must be Fixed. On a success the target moves their next action toward the Fixed Place, Instrument, or a causal step the terminal model needs. They stay aware and may spend 1D4 WP to refuse, losing the action instead. Not ordinary mind control; doors, vehicles, alarms, and involuntary attention just conspire to make the required action the locally easiest one.
SAN Loss: 0/1D4 to examine prospective remains whose death date is in the future; 1/1D6 to meet the corresponding unwounded organism; 1D4/1D8 to live through a terminal rehearsal; 1D6/1D10 to grasp that your own forensic conclusion is physically narrowing a living creature’s future.
Final-State Protection
When damage would drop the Born Dead to 0 HP through an attack inconsistent with the Fixed conditions, it spends 4 WP and returns to 1 HP as the injury deforms toward the prospective corpse and then closes. Without 4 WP, begin Boundary Failure instead of immediate death. This cannot negate symmetric modification of both the living body and the prospective corpse, nor beat an attack satisfying the complete terminal model at Fit 6.
Endpoint Step
At Fit 3 or higher, it may spend 3 WP to move between two locations connected by a Fixed condition, emerging from a doorway at the Fixed Place, beside the designated Instrument, or within 5 metres of the Fixed Witness, out to one kilometre. The move uses an action and needs an untreated angle at either end. Curved containment blocks it.
Prospective Reflex
+20% to Dodge against an attack absent from the prospective corpse; −20% to Dodge against an attack matching a Fixed Mechanism or Instrument. The body can duck the deaths it is not permitted to keep. It has no comparable defense against the one it has to become.
Causal Recruitment
At Fit 2 or higher, once per scene the GM may introduce one plausible connection nudging a terminal component toward completion: a delivery reroutes, an elevator stops on the wrong floor, a witness gets an assignment, a substitute instrument turns up. It cannot conjure unique objects or erase successful player precautions. Every recruitment needs an ordinary causal route, and blocking that route works, though another may appear later if the condition stays Fixed.
Terminal Rehearsal
At Fits 3 and 5, and whenever the Born Dead spends 5 or more WP in one scene, the environment performs a partial terminal event: the creature takes the corpse’s posture, the instrument moves, the witness acts, or the Fixed Place briefly acquires the documented damage. Everyone directly involved tests SAN at 1/1D6. A rehearsal gives a clue to one remaining Open condition but does not Fix it on its own.
Terminal Coincidence
At Fit 6, once the Time and Place requirements are met, the Born Dead can be killed only by the established terminal model. If the required participants do nothing, the coincidences intensify each turn: required objects move or become available; the Witness must test POW or lose their next action to causal drafting; the Instrument attacks at 40%, then 60%, then 80% on successive turns; and on the fourth failed cycle, resolve a Lethality 20% environmental event affecting the organism and everyone within 3 metres. Players can interrupt it by reopening any Fixed condition before completion.
Completing the worldline
When the Born Dead dies in a way satisfying the closed terminal model, the prospective corpse and the new remains become one physical boundary object. Witnesses at the morgue watch the earlier corpse flatten into a blue, wet cross-section and vanish, while at the terminal site the newly dead body acquires every incision, sample removal, suture, identification mark, and handling injury inflicted during its autopsy. Samples already removed remain; their existence is now supported by the completed worldline. Everyone who sees the merger loses 1D4/1D8 SAN, and the Fixed Witness loses an extra 1 with no test. The body is now ordinary dead matter apart from residual Tindalosian contamination. If the terminal event fails to merge the two cross-sections, both sets of remains persist and a second living projection may emerge between them. That possibility is why organizations cremate completed specimens. It is also why cremation sometimes produces twins.
Boundary Failure
Boundary Failure begins when a Fixed Time passes without terminal completion, when Final-State Protection fires without enough WP, when too many terminal records are destroyed after the living projection stabilizes, or when changes to the prospective corpse leave the current living anatomy unable to reach it. At the start of each scene during Boundary Failure, the Born Dead loses 1D4 HP and 1D4 WP ignoring Armour, one organ or memory or relationship or section of anatomy becomes incomplete, and the GM attempts a Terminal Correction: choose or roll one of an alternative instrument acquiring the required geometry; the living organism and Witness being displaced 1D100 metres toward the Fixed Place; a previously Open condition becoming Probable through new physical evidence; the prospective corpse changing to match the nearest viable terminal history (everyone examining it loses 1/1D6 SAN); a causal rehearsal doing 1D8 to someone other than the organism; or one Fixed condition reopening, dropping Terminal Fit by 1 and ending Boundary Failure for now. If the Born Dead reaches 0 HP through Boundary Failure, it collapses into disconnected anatomical cross-sections and is pulled through the nearest angle, and the prospective corpse decays through nineteen years in 1D6 minutes. Whether that prevents its birth or merely relocates the complete worldline is unknown.
Changing the terminal boundary
Preserve underdetermination. Keep several serious explanations alive for a wound, location, time, or witness. Do not manufacture random noise; build or protect alternatives that stay physically consistent under examination. One successful test can stop a Probable condition becoming Fixed. Reopening a Fixed one usually needs two independent successes plus the destruction, invalidation, or reinterpretation of the records that made it unique.
Destroy the record. Destroying the prospective corpse reopens every condition it was the only recoverable record for, and does nothing to conditions already encoded redundantly in samples, scans, reports, witnesses, or environmental changes. Destroying the body after Fit 3 immediately triggers Boundary Failure.
Alter the remains. Physical alteration changes the terminal state only if it gets documented as part of the corpse rather than recognized as later handling damage. A surgical change, an implanted substance, a modified wound may reopen one condition or substitute another. Once Identity is Fixed, modification does 1D4 to the living organism, and major alteration costs the operator 1/1D6 SAN when the matching prospective injury appears.
Substitute an instrument. Forensic evidence constrains properties, not names. A three-channel penetrating wound could come from a hydraulic fork, a ritual implement, a surgical device, a broken chair assembly, or a specially prepared restraint. A safer substitute has to match every Fixed physical feature; a successful Engineering, Medicine, Science, Craft, or relevant test makes it Probable, and a second independent validation may reopen the original Instrument condition.
Change the story without changing the facts. The corpse can establish that the Witness’s cells were under its grasping structures. It does not establish whether the Witness killed the organism, treated it, carried it, or was rescued by it. This is the investigators’ greatest source of agency, because terminal facts constrain physics far more tightly than they constrain meaning. They can stage a controlled death, an accidental death, a euthanasia, a fight, surgery, or a sacrifice that all produce the same material endpoint. The organism may care desperately which narrative surrounds its last moments even where the boundary does not.
Separate the endpoint. Continuous curved containment around the corpse can cut its coupling to the living projection. While it is contained, alterations and new measurements do not become terminal records unless they are transmitted outside. The corpse stays dangerous; the chamber is not hiding information from reality, it is keeping that information from joining the angular worldline.
Running the investigation fairly
Prepare at least two viable alternatives for every Open condition. Never let a skill success Fix a condition without player synthesis. Announce when a conclusion will raise Terminal Fit. Preserve facts once observed, and reinterpret ambiguity rather than erasing clear evidence. Give every Fixed condition a visible prospective consequence. Let players exploit the gap between physical fact and narrative meaning. Allow careful substitutions and controlled terminal events. Do not use Causal Recruitment to override blocked routes without explanation. Treat Boundary Failure as escalating pressure, not a licence for arbitrary coincidence. And remember the creature is trying to survive, even when survival threatens its birth. By Day 10, the investigators can predict the death. The whole thing turns on what they do once that prediction becomes operational.
Scenario operations
Cause of Death
A prospective corpse has three wounds, any one of which could be fatal, and different agencies insist on fixing different Mechanisms because each implies a different threat: industrial sabotage, ritual murder, or Hound attack. The living organism is trying to keep all three explanations viable. One wound leads to a controllable euthanasia. Another will rupture a containment site. The third requires one of the Protagonists to become the Instrument.
The Mercy Killing
Five terminal conditions are Fixed. The remaining Time condition spans three months. The Born Dead is intelligent, articulate, and in continuous prospective pain, and it asks the Protagonists to narrow the time and complete the death now. The terminal merger will stabilize a Hound scar under the hospital. Waiting might allow a safer substitute. The creature does not believe it can last that long.
The Wrong Witness
DNA fixes a Protagonist as the Witness. Investigation assumes they kill the organism, and prospective rehearsals make the creature attack them again and again. Closer analysis shows the cells came from CPR performed after the fatal injury: they identify the Protagonist as the last person who tries to save it, not its killer. Fixing that reading does not prevent the death. It decides who will be holding the body when it happens.
Future Evidence
The terminal Instrument contains an electronic control module whose serial number will be assigned next week. The investigators seize the manufacturing line and stop production. At Boundary Failure, several existing devices start changing internally toward the required geometry. The team can permit one controlled module to be built or watch the terminal function distribute itself across an entire factory.
The Unautopsied
An organization has stored twelve prospective corpses without examining any of them, and no living projections have appeared because no terminal condition has been Fixed. A new director orders full genomic, radiological, and forensic processing, and the automated analysis starts connecting bodies to locations, materials, and staff. One by one, living organisms begin emerging throughout the facility. The database is giving birth.
Born Twice
The investigators complete a terminal event, but the prospective corpse does not merge with the new remains. Both bodies persist, each now a terminal boundary for a different compatible worldline. Two living projections emerge, one remembering being hunted by the investigators and one remembering the controlled death they tried to arrange, and both insist the other is the failed version that has to be killed.
Field classification
THE BORN DEAD Type: angular organism projected between an initial living state and a terminal corpse exposed out of sequence Habitat: future death sites, morgues, construction zones, forensic institutions, active Tindalosian boundaries Diet: appropriate to the projected anatomy; often incidental during its short local life Behaviour: desperate disruption, alteration, or diversification of terminal records Reproduction: possibly a self-closing worldline; failed terminal mergers can produce additional projections Primary sign: fresh remains containing materials, injuries, or timestamps belonging to future events Containment principle: preserve terminal ambiguity, isolate the corpse, and keep physical facts separate from narrative assumptions Primary hazard: every confirmed forensic conclusion removes futures in which the organism does not die that way
Why Hounds suffer
The Born Dead is the first real evidence that native angular life may ordinarily experience its worldline as a bounded whole. Birth and death jointly define the organism, and its anatomy is not forced to discover an unknown future one irreversible moment at a time. A Hound projected into curved space appears to lose that closure. It gets an initial state with no comprehensible terminal boundary. It experiences entropy without knowing the final distribution. Injuries pile up before their completed place in the body is available. Time arrives in sequence. The future is not already an anatomical fact. For us, uncertainty is just ordinary life. For a Hound, it may be a vivisection stretched across duration. The Born Dead is not unnatural because its death takes part in its birth. The Hound is unnatural because our spacetime has forced it to live open-ended.
Final autopsy amendment
17 September, 01:52. All six terminal conditions are now Fixed.
- Identity: Organism 10-04.
- Time: between 02:10 and 02:25.
- Place: Calder House, Level B4, Floodgate Four.
- Mechanism: exsanguination following three-channel cardiac penetration.
- Instrument: hydraulic alignment fork, component F4-A17.
- Witness: Dr. Mara Ilyan.
The organism breached the morgue at 01:31. It did not attack the corpse. It destroyed the terminal imaging server and took the fork out of secured storage. I intercepted it on Level B4. It put the fork into my hands. I had assumed it wanted me to understand how to kill it. It was showing me what I needed to destroy. The alarms closed Floodgate Four. The organism struck the unfinished wall, and concrete dust entered its respiratory cavities. I tried to sedate it with RV-17. It seized my arm. My skin is still under its grasping structures. The fork is between us. The terminal window begins in eighteen minutes. By narrowing the terminal conditions, the autopsy taught the future how to kill the creature.
