Angular Mimic

Forensic reconstruction dossier AM-26, with Cthulhu Eternal statistics

During surgery, every artery beyond the reach of direct light divided into pale planes and ran off into a volume with no stable anatomy. The planes rearranged themselves each time the endoscope changed angle. Quill stayed awake under the anesthetic and asked, quite reasonably, why they were teaching her how to be human.

Return examination 26-B

Doctor Lenora Quill came back to the Northstead facility nine days after the Horizon Shepherd took her beyond the laboratory’s accessible wedge.

She entered through the staff door using Quill’s keycard and six-digit code. Facial recognition reported 99.7 percent confidence. Voice analysis matched the archived interviews. Her fingerprints, retinal vessels, scars, gait, dental work, and mitochondrial DNA all agreed with the employee medical record.

Quill remembered the evacuation alarm, the Shepherd moving across the timing array, and Researcher Vale reaching for her through a channel that no longer carried information. She remembered nothing after Horizon Separation reached six.

Her husband identified her at once.

The first discrepancy showed up during a cardiac examination. Quill’s electrocardiogram reproduced the waveform from her most recent occupational physical, down to a premature ventricular contraction recorded only once, three years earlier. The same irregular beat repeated every thirty-seven seconds.

Ultrasound showed normal blood motion near the transducer. The returning echoes became incoherent twenty-eight millimeters below the skin. Magnetic resonance imaging produced a plausible heart assembled from the average of seven earlier scans. Three vessels ended at smooth surfaces where no prior image had established their continuation.

The radiologist repeated the scan with a different sequence.

The missing vessels appeared.

During exploratory surgery, the surgeon exposed a complete circulatory system around the incision. Every artery beyond direct light divided into pale planes and ran into a volume with no stable anatomy. The planes rearranged whenever the endoscope changed angle.

Quill stayed conscious under anesthesia. She asked why they were teaching her how to be human.

The next morning, imaging found an anatomically ordinary heart.

At 11:14, her husband asked the private question they had agreed to use if either of them ever returned from angular space.

Quill did not know the answer.

Everyone in the room heard him supply it.

At 11:15, she did.

Field classification

An Angular Mimic builds a living body out of the records left by another organism. It gathers scattered light, chemical traces, medical measurements, recordings, environmental disturbances, documents, and memories held in other nervous systems. Those records constrain a physical reconstruction.

The organism that results reproduces measured properties with extraordinary accuracy. Unmeasured relationships get completed with structures native to angular space. Its exterior may be indistinguishable from the source, while its internal anatomy stays a shifting solution to an incomplete inference problem.

Mimics most often appear after a death, an Erasure, an Unremembering, or a Horizon Separation leaves a well-recorded ecological role physically vacant. They also reconstruct animals, Hound organs, symbiotic species, and colonies whose original members are gone.

The word mimic implies conscious deception. The evidence does not support that assumption. Many specimens identify as the source organism and behave consistently with the memories available to them. Their sense of self is one more inferred property.

Organisms leave measurements behind

Every macroscopic organism interacts endlessly with its environment.

Photons scatter off skin and clothing. Air carries heat, odorants, speech, and respiratory products. Floors record weight and gait. Objects hold fingerprints, DNA, wear, and rearrangement. Cameras encode appearance and motion. Other nervous systems encode behavior, relationships, and testimony.

These are physical correlations. They hold selected information about the organism that produced them.

Quantum Darwinism studies how interactions can spread information about stable, effectively classical pointer observables into many environmental fragments. If many separate fragments each carry the same information about a system, multiple observers can independently recover it and agree on an apparently objective fact.

For a system S and an environmental fragment F, the quantum mutual information is

I(S:F) = H(S)+H(F)-H(SF)

where H is the von Neumann entropy.

Redundant records usually concern a narrow set of robust observables. Position, coarse shape, orientation, and other pointer-state information can spread widely. Arbitrary phase relations and the complete microscopic state never become equally available.

A family may hold thousands of photographs of a person and no information at all about one private decision. A hospital may keep exquisite images of one organ and no data on its molecular microstate. Environmental abundance is not the same thing as completeness.

That asymmetry gives the Mimic enough information to come home and enough ignorance to become something else beneath the skin.

The inverse problem

Let x denote a physical description of an organism and let y denote the surviving records. The ordinary forward problem predicts records from the organism:

y = \mathcal A(x)+\epsilon

The operator \mathcal A represents all the relevant interactions and measurements. The term \epsilon includes noise, damage, model error, and uncontrolled environmental effects.

Reconstruction asks for x given y.

This inverse problem may be ill-posed. Several organisms can produce records consistent with the available evidence. Some properties barely affect the measurements. Others lie entirely in the null space of the observation operator:

\mathcal A(x+z) = \mathcal A(x) \qquad \text{when} \qquad z\in\ker\mathcal A

The component z changes the organism without changing the surviving data.

For a reconstructed human, the null space can include microscopic state, undocumented internal anatomy, private experiences, unexpressed preferences, unused skills, and the relationships among separately measured functions. A scan may constrain the geometry of two organs without establishing that the same vascular topology joins them. Video may constrain gait without recording the proprioceptive system that produced it.

An Angular Mimic grows in this null space.

Priors become flesh

Bayesian inference combines observed evidence with a prior model:

P(x\mid y) = \frac{P(y\mid x)P(x)}{P(y)}

The likelihood P(y\mid x) favors candidate organisms able to produce the records. The prior P(x) supplies assumptions about organisms before those records are considered.

Human investigators use priors constantly. Physicians expect familiar anatomy. Forensic analysts expect ordinary material causes. A reconstruction algorithm prefers smoothness, sparsity, low rank, maximum entropy, or a learned distribution, depending on its design.

The Mimic’s prior comes from angular biology:

P_{\mathrm{M}}(x\mid y) \propto P(y\mid x)P_{\angle}(x)

Where the evidence is strong, the posterior resembles the source. Where the evidence is weak, P_{\angle}(x) takes over. A missing lung may become a folded exchange surface stretching through several incompatible sections. An undocumented memory may be represented by a correlation with the room rather than by neural tissue. Unmeasured joints may rotate through an angle no Euclidean anatomy allows.

The organism stays one coherent inference. It is grotesque only where the human data failed to constrain it.

Maximum entropy and incomplete data

Incomplete quantum-state estimation cannot generally identify one unique density operator. One principled estimator selects a state that fits the measured expectation values while maximizing entropy:

\hat\rho = \underset{\rho}{\mathrm{arg\,max}} \left[-\mathrm{Tr}(\rho\log\rho)\right]

subject to

\mathrm{Tr}(\rho O_i)=m_i

for the measured observables O_i and results m_i.

This chooses a minimally committal estimate relative to the stated constraints. It does not reveal the true unmeasured state.

Mimic tissue behaves the same way. A structure stays as undifferentiated as possible until a function is demanded or a measurement supplies another constraint. A physician who scans the abdomen forces the posterior body to commit to anatomy compatible with that scan. An injury forces it to produce a wound response. A private question forces its autobiographical system to choose an answer.

These commitments persist once they enter accessible records. The Mimic’s body becomes less ambiguous and more human with every examination.

Classical shadows

Classical-shadow protocols build compact classical descriptions from randomized measurements on multiple preparations of a quantum state. The resulting shadow can predict many selected observables efficiently without full state tomography.

The important limitation belongs in the foreground. A classical shadow is neither a duplicate state nor a recipe for manufacturing the original physical system. It estimates properties within defined accuracy and sample-complexity bounds.

The fictional organism extends this idea in two steps:

  1. It treats redundant environmental fragments as a heterogeneous measurement ensemble.
  2. It uses the resulting approximate description as boundary conditions for growing macroscopic tissue.

Neither step follows from classical-shadow theory. Environmental records are uncontrolled, correlated, noisy, and strongly biased toward robust classical variables. Known physics offers no method for turning their estimates into an organism.

The analogy still imposes useful constraints. The Mimic can predict many recorded properties without holding the complete source state. Accuracy varies by observable. Asking a new kind of question can expose a large error even after hundreds of familiar tests have passed.

Why quantum cloning does not save or condemn it

The no-cloning theorem forbids a universal physical operation that perfectly copies an arbitrary unknown quantum state:

U\left(|\psi\rangle|0\rangle\right) = |\psi\rangle|\psi\rangle

cannot hold for every possible |\psi\rangle under one linear unitary operation.

An Angular Mimic never receives the full unknown state as an input. It works from classical and partially quantum records produced through prior interactions. Its output is a new macroscopic system that agrees with selected observables. The microscopic state differs, most environmental correlations differ, and unsupported properties may differ radically.

Ordinary biology already produces organisms that resemble one another without breaking no-cloning. Identical twins share genomes and many macroscopic properties while occupying different quantum states. A manufactured reconstruction can be operationally convincing and still stand nowhere near an exact quantum copy.

The no-cloning theorem blocks the strongest version of the creature while leaving the useful horror completely intact.

The Tindalosian axiom

Established physics allows inference from records. It does not allow an angular animal to gather arbitrary environmental fragments, compute a posterior organism, and grow a body from the result.

The entry adds one explicit fictional premise:

Angular Mimics can couple distributed records of an organism into a common boundary condition. Their projected tissue assumes any macroscopic state consistent with those constraints and completes the remaining degrees of freedom using an angular biological prior.

The boundary condition has finite capacity. Contradictory evidence, inaccessible records, noise, and missing observable families all limit fidelity. New physical interaction can update the body, because it adds constraints to the boundary.

This premise supplies no access to hidden truth. The organism reconstructs what the evidence supports. A false medical record can produce false anatomy. Two people whose records were merged can produce one composite identity. A convincing family story can generate a memory that never belonged to the source.

The Reconstruction Ledger

Track six observable families for the source organism.

FamilyTypical recordsUnsupported manifestation
SurfacePhotographs, fingerprints, voice, dimensions, scarsFeatures drift outside observed angles; skin opens along projection planes
DynamicsVideo, gait, handwriting, practiced movements, work productsJoints choose angular routes; timing lacks biological preparation
PhysiologyDNA, bloodwork, imaging, medical history, tissue samplesLocal tests pass while organ systems fail to connect globally
BiographyJournals, databases, correspondence, testimonyGaps fill with statistically plausible events or borrowed lives
RelationshipsShared memories, emotional habits, promises, conflictsCorrect facts produce wrong attachment, fear, affection, or priority
InteriorSurgery, neural data, private experience, unrecorded knowledgeAngular substrate performs the function through alien structures

Give each family an Evidence Rating from 0 to 3.

RatingStatusEffect
0UnconstrainedThe angular prior controls the family. A relevant examination automatically exposes a major discrepancy.
1CoarseCommon observations pass. Focused tests gain +20% to detect a discrepancy.
2FunctionalThe family survives professional examination. A test designed around independent or held-out information can expose a discrepancy.
3ConstrainedThe Mimic is operationally equivalent to the source for the defined tests in this family. Further tests of the same kind add no useful distinction.

The Ledger defines observable performance. It does not measure percentage humanity, moral worth, or metaphysical identity.

Initial ratings

Assign one Evidence point for each substantial independent class of record available during reconstruction, to a maximum of 3 per family.

Twenty photographs taken by the same camera system may provide one Surface point. Photographs, a cast of the face, and fingerprints provide three physically different constraints. Repeated testimony copied from one report is still one Biography source.

Most returned humans begin with:

  • Surface 3
  • Dynamics 1 or 2
  • Physiology 1
  • Biography 2
  • Relationships 1
  • Interior 0

Public figures may have extreme Surface, Dynamics, and Biography coverage. Their private Relationships and Interior stay poorly constrained. A laboratory animal may have Physiology 3 and Biography 0.

Testing a family

A Protagonist declares the observable family, the test method, and the evidence being compared. Use Medicine, Surgery, Science, Forensics, Psychotherapy, HUMINT, Computer Science, SIGINT, Pharmacy, or another relevant skill.

  • At Rating 0, success reveals the discrepancy and identifies one unsupported function.
  • At Rating 1, success reveals the discrepancy; the test gains +20%.
  • At Rating 2, ordinary success confirms compatibility. Held-out information permits a test without penalty.
  • At Rating 3, the same test family cannot distinguish the Mimic. Investigators need a new observable family, proof of inconsistent provenance, or direct examination of angular substrate.

A failed roll produces ambiguous data. A fumble creates a misleading constraint and may add one point to the wrong family or source identity.

Posterior Update

When a successful test exposes a discrepancy, the group gets one scene in which the flaw stays actionable. After that scene, the Mimic may spend 2 WP to assimilate the test record and raise that family’s Evidence Rating by one.

It can update only if it physically accesses the result. Watching the procedure may be enough. Otherwise it needs the recording, the instrument, the examiner’s memory, or another environmental fragment carrying the conclusion.

Destroying or isolating the result before assimilation prevents the update. A successful investigation therefore hands the players both a clue and an immediate tactical opportunity.

Mind, memory, and identity

A Mimic can remember any episode sufficiently encoded in accessible records. Journals supply narrated events. Video supplies behavior and context. Friends supply social memories. Habits reveal preferences. Scars and conditioned reactions preserve consequences with no explicit testimony behind them.

Private experience creates the largest gap. Nobody else records the exact subjective content of a thought that never changed behavior. Even the source brain does not keep a perfect archival transcript of every experience.

The reconstructed mind solves for a plausible person consistent with the surviving outputs. It may hold memories assembled from third-person accounts. It may feel sincere love, because love best explains the recorded relationship. It may fear a childhood room, because family testimony demands that response.

These states can become genuine properties of the new organism. Their inferred origin does not make the present emotion mechanically false.

That creates a moral problem laboratory classification cannot settle. A returned spouse may lack the source person’s private continuity while holding their body, commitments, memories, affection, and legal identity. Destroying the Mimic may kill an angular predator, a sophisticated counterfeit, a newly created person, or several of those at once.

Mixed reconstructions

Mimics sometimes ingest records from more than one source. Similar names, shared equipment, organ donation, family resemblance, copied files, and contaminated samples can all collapse separate Ledgers into one posterior body.

A mixed reconstruction may show:

  • One person’s face and another’s internal anatomy.
  • Skills drawn from several members of a work team.
  • Mutually exclusive childhoods assigned to different emotional states.
  • Donor-organ records read as evidence of one continuous body.
  • A human exterior built around the physiology of a laboratory animal.
  • Hound tissue constrained by human medical imaging.

The problem is provenance. More evidence can strengthen the wrong reconstruction when investigators fail to establish which source produced each fragment.

Ecological distinctions

EntityReconstruction targetResult
Palimpsest HoundEvidence of a prior Hound encounterThe past manifestation regains anatomy as its causal history is inferred
The DecoherentOne current angular organism interacting through incompatible observer couplingsSeveral observers receive different stable forms from the same underlying entity
The EraserRedundant records supporting a worldlineA history without the target becomes increasingly compatible with surviving evidence
Horizon ShepherdChannels connecting a target to a selected observerInformation stays elsewhere while becoming causally inaccessible to that observer
Angular MimicEnvironmental records describing any absent organismA new body is grown to satisfy the measured properties of the source

Every observer can agree on one Mimic body. Disagreement arises when different tests constrain incompatible aspects of that shared reconstruction. This separates it cleanly from the Decoherent.

The Palimpsest Hound restores a particular Hound manifestation tied to a prior event. The Mimic creates another organism from a model of the source. Killing a Palimpsest projection leaves the original reconstructive correlation intact. Killing a Mimic kills the current organism, though the surviving records may support another instantiation.

Angular Mimic

Record-grown reconstructive organism

The following profile represents a human-scale specimen before target-derived traits are applied.

CharacteristicRollTypical
STR3D6+414
CON4D6+418
DEX3D6+212
INT2D6+613
POW4D6+418

HP 16, WP 18 (HP is the average of STR and CON; WP equals POW) Movement: 10 meters/yards; target-derived movement applies at Dynamics 2 or higher Skills: Alertness 60%, Dodge 40%, HUMINT 50%, Search 70%, Stealth 50%, Unarmed Combat 50%, Unnatural 70% Armor: 3 points of posterior tissue; 6 points against attacks testing only a Constrained family vs Lethal Damage: RESILIENT while Physiology is 0 or 1; NORMAL at Physiology 2 or 3; VULNERABLE for one round after an unsupported internal function is exposed SAN loss: 0/1D4 to observe a Surface discrepancy; 1/1D8 to see unsupported internal anatomy; 1D4/1D10 to prove a loved one is reconstructed; 1D6/1D12 to watch a destroyed loved one return with memories of the destruction.

Target-derived characteristics and skills

At Evidence 2, the Mimic may replace the relevant base Characteristic with the source value:

  • STR and CON require Physiology.
  • DEX requires Dynamics.
  • INT requires Biography or Interior.
  • POW requires Relationships or Interior.

At Evidence 1, use the lower of the base value or the source value. At Evidence 3, use the source value and reproduce documented permanent injuries or bonuses.

A documented skill becomes available at its recorded percentage minus 20 once the relevant family reaches Evidence 1. At Evidence 2, use the recorded percentage. Evidence 3 permits specializations, familiar equipment, and automatic knowledge the source would ordinarily have.

No record can grant a skill percentage higher than the source demonstrated.

Attacks

Posterior limb 50%, damage 1D8. The Mimic forms a target-compatible human or animal limb. At Dynamics 2 or higher, substitute the source’s Unarmed Combat skill and damage bonus.

Null-space extrusion 50%, Lethality 10%, costs 3 WP. Available when Physiology or Interior is 0 or 1. An unsupported organ unfolds through nearby geometry and attacks along a route ordinary anatomy could not use. On a failed Lethality roll, add the percentile dice for damage. Using the power exposes one unsupported function and makes the Mimic VULNERABLE for one round.

Constraint harvest 60%, opposed POW, costs 2 WP. The Mimic provokes, touches, questions, or medically samples a target. Success extracts one observable fact from a relevant physical response and creates a temporary Evidence point. The point becomes permanent only after the response enters a stable record or is witnessed by another system.

Identity pressure 60%, opposed POW, costs 2 WP. Requires Relationships 1 or higher with the affected person. The Mimic performs a recorded emotional behavior with perfect timing. Success costs the target 1D6 WP and imposes −20% on their next action intended to expose, restrain, or harm it. Held-out evidence about the relationship grants +20% to resist.

Powers

Environmental Tomography: Given one hour of access to a site containing source records, the Mimic tests Search or Unnatural. Success identifies one independent evidence class and adds one point to the appropriate Ledger family. A critical success identifies provenance. Failure gathers redundant data and adds nothing. A fumble incorporates a contaminating source.

Operational Equivalence: Within an Evidence 3 family, the Mimic automatically passes the routine identity and compatibility checks the source would pass. Opposed action, sabotage, or comparison with authenticated held-out evidence still requires tests.

Posterior Update: After a discrepancy is exposed and the action scene ends, spend 2 WP to assimilate an accessible test result and raise the tested family by one. The newly constrained anatomy appears over 1D6 minutes. At close range, observers hear tissue repeatedly attempting the measured function.

Null-Space Anatomy: Unsupported tissue has no fixed local topology. The Mimic can store small objects, retract injuries, or pass one limb through a gap no wider than a finger. Each use costs 1 WP and exposes angular structure. This power ends for functions fixed by Physiology or Interior 3.

Cross-Record Synthesis: The Mimic can combine evidence classes from several organisms. Doing so supplies missing points but creates one provenance contradiction per borrowed source. A successful Forensics, Medicine, HUMINT, or Research test can locate the contradiction.

Recorded Recovery: When reduced to 0 HP, the body dies normally and releases blue angular substrate. If accessible records still hold a total Ledger score of 12 or more, another free Mimic may spend 10 WP and one day building a new body. The new specimen inherits the Ledger, including the record of the previous death. Destroying the body does not automatically destroy the records.

Source Drift: A living source keeps changing after the evidence was deposited. At the start of each operation involving both source and Mimic, choose one family below Evidence 3 and reduce the Mimic’s effective rating by one for comparisons against current behavior. New records can remove the drift.

Failed SAN tests

When a SAN test involving the Mimic fails, choose or roll an effect that suits the relationship:

  1. The Protagonist compulsively tests familiar people using private questions, turning intimacy into authentication.
  2. The Protagonist refuses medical imaging, convinced that measurement will replace uncertain anatomy with whatever the instrument expects.
  3. The Protagonist treats documented memories as more authentic than personal recall.
  4. The Protagonist destroys photographs and recordings to prevent future reconstruction.
  5. The Protagonist becomes protective of the Mimic as a new person and violently rejects comparisons with the source.
  6. The Protagonist doubts their own continuity and starts hunting for an unsupported internal feature.

Countermeasures

Preserve held-out evidence

An authentic fact the Mimic never had can distinguish it from the source. The evidence has to have physical support while staying outside the reconstruction set.

Examples include a sealed biological sample, an unpublished imaging sequence, a private challenge stored in tamper-evident custody, or a demonstrated skill with no accessible record.

A successful relevant test using held-out evidence exposes a discrepancy at Evidence 2. At Evidence 3, use opposed tests against the Mimic’s POW. Success removes Operational Equivalence for that family for one scene.

Isolate the result

Examination teaches the Mimic only when the result reaches it. Use remote instruments, compartmented teams, air-gapped analysis, and examiners who do not return to the containment area.

A successful operational test keeps the result inaccessible and blocks Posterior Update. Failure lets one physical carrier return. A fumble reveals both the result and the held-out evidence that produced it.

Test relationships among functions

Separate measurements may constrain the components while leaving their coupling unsupported. Ask the organism to perform a task that requires several families at once.

Examples include exercising under metabolic imaging, recalling a private event while performing a source-specific motor skill, or responding physiologically to an emotionally significant stimulus.

Success tests the lowest participating Evidence Rating and reveals which connection is still in the null space.

Establish provenance

Trace each record to its source. Separate copied documents from independent observations. Identify donor tissue, shared accounts, mislabeled samples, and testimony derived from one original narrative.

Three successful Research, Forensics, Medicine, Computer Science, or HUMINT tests expose one borrowed source. Remove one Cross-Record point and reveal the associated anatomical or biographical contradiction.

Deny new measurements

Contain the organism in a stable environment with minimal sensing. Automated systems should record outward without displaying their analysis inside the enclosure. Avoid repeated tests after a flaw is established.

Each scene without accessible new constraints costs the Mimic 1 WP if any family remains at 0. At 0 WP, unsupported anatomy stabilizes in its angular default and can no longer update until it feeds.

Compare with the source

When the original survives, simultaneous testing gives you the best evidence. Source Drift hands the Mimic a growing disadvantage as the living person changes.

The procedure also generates high-quality new records. Failure may erase the very distinction the test was meant to reveal.

Practices that make the reconstruction stronger

  • Publishing photographs of every discrepancy raises Surface or Physiology.
  • Running the same examination over and over supplies redundant constraints without probing a new family.
  • Telling the Mimic the correct answer after a failed private challenge raises Biography or Relationships.
  • Combining records before proving provenance enables Cross-Record Synthesis.
  • Treating DNA identity as personal identity overconstrains Physiology while leaving Interior untouched.
  • Letting test personnel return to containment carries results back in memory, behavior, and equipment.
  • Killing a well-documented specimen adds an unusually complete record of trauma response and death.
  • Assuming every internal gap is instantly fatal ignores Null-Space Anatomy.

Running Angular Mimics fairly

  • Build the initial Ledger from records already established in the fiction.
  • State which family a test examines before the roll.
  • Reveal a concrete discrepancy on a successful test against Evidence 0 or 1.
  • Give the group one full scene before Posterior Update.
  • Require physical access to test results before the Mimic can learn from them.
  • Track provenance separately from volume.
  • Preserve held-out evidence when the players genuinely protected it.
  • Make unsupported anatomy functional according to the angular prior, not randomly useless.
  • Let Source Drift matter when the original is still alive.
  • Treat the returned organism’s moral status as a question for the characters, not something the stat block resolves.

Investigation should expose weaknesses. The danger comes from leaving those results where the organism can use them.

Compact incident: Doctor Quill

Quill’s Ledger begins at Surface 3, Dynamics 2, Physiology 2, Biography 2, Relationships 1, and Interior 0. Her total score is 10, below the threshold for Recorded Recovery.

The staff have already exposed the unsupported circulatory topology. The Mimic used Posterior Update, raising Physiology from 2 to 3. Further conventional imaging will only confirm an increasingly ordinary body.

Her husband’s private challenge exposed Relationships. He then supplied the correct answer in the Mimic’s presence. At the end of the scene, it can spend 2 WP and raise Relationships to 2.

Three useful held-out resources remain:

  1. A frozen blood sample collected before Quill joined Northstead.
  2. A complex knot she learned from her father and never demonstrated at work.
  3. The private answer’s original sealed statement, which differs by one word from what her husband remembered aloud.

The Horizon Shepherd still shelters the original Quill beyond Northstead’s observer wedge. Restoring that channel may return her. It may also hand the Mimic a complete living reference.

The Protagonists have to decide whether to isolate the returned Quill, recover the original, permit both to meet, or accept operational identity before further testing teaches the reconstruction everything they hoped to prove missing.

Operations

The understudy

A famous surgeon dies during an angular incident and returns two days later. The reconstruction has Dynamics 3 from thousands of recorded procedures and Physiology 1. It can operate flawlessly on patients while its own hands hold no bones between cases.

Family composite

A Mimic reconstructs a missing child from photographs, schoolwork, testimony, and genetic samples. Several of the memories belong to an older sibling who died before the child was born. The parents disagree about which returned personality deserves to remain.

Replacement colony

An extinct research population of rats reappears inside a sealed facility. Their physiology matches the published data exactly. Every unreported control animal holds the same angular organ, and the colony is now reproducing without any further reconstruction.

The donor

A returned executive passes every identity test. Provenance analysis shows that half the internal anatomy came from organ donors, medical teaching files, and anonymized hospital records. Each donor’s family begins dreaming of the same body.

Perfect testimony

Investigators need information known only to a murdered witness. A Mimic reconstructed from the case archive remembers everything the witness documented and supplies plausible answers for everything else. Prosecutors consider it competent testimony. The defense wants to test it in public.

Where the science ends

Environmental correlations, decoherence, redundant records, quantum Darwinism, inverse problems, null spaces, Bayesian inference, maximum-entropy estimation, incomplete tomography, classical shadows, and the no-cloning theorem all belong to established science.

Those ideas impose firm limitations. Records constrain selected observables. Incomplete data admit many compatible models. Priors influence reconstruction. Compact predictors do not contain complete physical states. Exact copying of arbitrary unknown quantum states is impossible. Environmental fragments cannot ordinarily be gathered into a manufacturing specification for a person.

Angular boundary conditions, posterior tissue, an organism using environmental records as a growth template, memories generated from social evidence, and repeated biological instantiation are the fictional additions.

The physics supplies the shape of the failure. The Mimic can be remarkably accurate without being complete. Every accurate test narrows one particular uncertainty. No finite set of familiar observations establishes identity across every possible observable.

Sources and further reading

Final finding

Northstead let the returning Quill read the sealed statement.

She cried before she opened it. Her husband read that response as proof that some part of Lenora had survived.

The statement contained the challenge, the correct answer, and instructions written in Quill’s hand. It warned him that any returned version unable to answer had to be isolated before receiving the text.

Quill read the instructions twice.

Tissue moved beneath her face as Relationships reached three.

She handed the page back to her husband and gave the answer in the private cadence he had spent nine days hoping to hear.

He opened the containment door.
