Six Cults a-Culting

Following once again in the tenuous holiday connection of “the stars just happen to be aligning on the Winter Solstice!” we present a scenario in which arcane resources are finite, and a number of fringe cults and duking it out to come up on top before the Winter Solstice.

Four Visiting Ghosts

In 1843, Charles Dickens published the Christmas classic, A Christmas Carol. For those of you who have somehow missed either the literary work or the barrage of film adaptations, it’s about a miserly old bastard named Scrooge who is visited by four different spirits (an old business partner, as well as the ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet To Come) who show him how to find the true meaning of Christmas. Fifty years after the publishing of this fine tale, mischievous parties decide to do a little reenactment of their own.

Three Great Old Ones

There are some pretty general assumptions about the Great Old Ones. First, that all of them were to some degree friendly or neutral to each other. (Or, they seem that way to this uneducated boob.) Second, is that they are all somehow sealed away by intentional means. This scenario tosses those two assumptions out the window as three bitter enemies prepare to awaken from the millennia long slumber in order to renew their past gripes with each other.

Two Christmas Goats

The Finnish apparently refer to Santa Claus as Joulupukki. However, Joulupukki was not always the jolly old elf we know and love today. No, apparently Joulupukki, whose name literally means “Yule Buck”, was originally an evil spirit with goat horns clad in goat skins. This Christmas Goat would go around demanding, not giving out, gifts. What’s more, in Iceland they had a giant Yule Cat that went around eating lazy people. And where there are strange legends of demonic creatures, there’s a Call of Cthulhu adventure to be found! (Or, at the very least, an X-Files episode.)

And a ghoul hiding under the tree!

Editor’s Note: Sorry for the delay! AT&T @Home decided to do their server migration this weekend, and I spent hours working on getting my Internet working again so I could post this.

Richard Upton Pickman demonstrated the relative ease with which a human can devolve into the homovoric depths of ghouldom. However, what if a human, once descended to that bestial plane, decides that it wants to recapture his humanity.

The Twelve Days of Cthulhu

I realized on Thanksgiving morning that I’d missed a great opportunity for an article. I mean, what’s more Lovecraftian than a band of religious pilgrims landing on a foreign and savage shore in what would eventually become Massachusetts, and have to turn to the natives for assistance. As Lovecraft demonstrated, Native Americans and Mythos go together like two peas in a pod. Who knows what zany adventures they must have had?

Chewin’ the Fat with Christian Matzke

Since our most popular article of late has been the interview with the d20 Call of Cthulhu developers, we thought, “Hey, how about some more interviews with cool and prominent people in Lovecraftia Fandom?” So, our next guest to our Interrogation Lounge is Christian Matzke. For those of you not immediately saying, “Oh, yeah. Christian Matzke. Love that guy,” here’s the scoop.

Tynes and Cook talk about d20 Call of Cthulhu

Nearly a year ago, Wizards of the Coast announced its plans to publish a d20 version of Call of Cthulhu, the cult classic game of eldritch horror put out by Chaosium, with game designers John Tynes and Monte Cook behind the wheel. With the release of the game scheduled for early next year, Shoggoth.net decided to hit the designers up for an interview. Continue reading »

A Conspiracy of Cthulhians

For the casual viewer of “The X-Files,” you probably know at least one thing about Fox Mulder: his sister was abducted by aliens. You might have no clue what the sister’s name is or how old she was when she was kidnapped or why she was even abducted in the first place, but you know she was abducted. Mulder pursues the trail of her abduction sporadically through the series like the reporter in Citizen Kane chases after the meaning of “Rosebud.”

And, by virtue of the fact that Chris Carter wasn’t very strict with creative control, there are at least three different explanations for what happened to Mulder’s sister, two of which suggest that there was never an alien abduction. They did the same thing with Scully. Scully gets abducted, has her ovaries milked and some sort of device stuck in the back of her neck, then later finds out that the abductors were quite human.

What does this have to do with Call of Cthulhu? Simple: just because you’re playing a game where the characters wander around and investigate paranormal stuff, doesn’t mean there has to be paranormal stuff in the game.
