Despite historical sightings going back to the dark ages very little is known about these strange creatures. Some say these creatures are the products of ancient magic, elemental forces given shape and will. Others say they are natives to another dimension who take on a terrestrial shape to contain the unstable energies that their made of. Whatever their origins these fast moving, frightening creatures can be as dangerous as they are mysterious.
Hellfire Hounds appear suddenly, manifesting into our reality in a mist like cloud of sparkling lights and spatial distortion. What appears from this is a creature of shadow, smoke and fire given form, mimicking that of a wolf. Their bodies are surrounded by smoke and fire, granting them some minor natural armor. While these creatures are incredibly vulnerable to physical matter, they are immune to fire, acid, poison, water, and spells that effect the mind or bodily functions. Strangely they take half damage from electricity.
The creatures even howl and growl, as they stalk their prey. Once located these creatures always attack, racing directly towards their targets with total abandon. In combat they deliver vicious bites, but the true danger lies in fighting back.
When struck by any form of terrestrial matter these creatures explode in a burst of fire. This destroys the Hellfire Hound and causes 1D6 points of damage to all creatures within a six-foot radius. The concussion force of such blasts briefly stuns those caught within it, imposing two penalty dice on all actions on the next combat round. The safest way to combat these creatures is with ranged weapons and successfully attacking them before they close to within 6 feet, causing them to explode without harming anyone. However, those making a successfully attacks using melee weapons are automatically caught in the blast.
Unfortunately, these creatures are never encountered alone appearing in packs of between four and sixteen individuals (4D4). Luckily these creatures only manifest once every other combat round, so it takes some time for a full pack to form.
