Bayechnik

“Olaf never knew when to stop. After a few drinks, chopping up a few goblins turns into an epic battle against fire-breathing ogres. Each night, the men at the end of our bed keep coming, but Olaf can’t tell them damn truth. Gods help us.”

No one knows the origins of the bayechnik, yet they seem tied to the very nature of narrative. These figures manifest after the telling of a terrifying tale in the evening, especially one that is supposed to be true but is not entirely accurate. They appear to be tall, gaunt old men with black eyes who stand at the end of the bed, muttering and grumbling.

The one afflicted by the bayechnik is forced to relive the events in their dreams, losing 1D3 Intelligence for each repetition until someone corrects the story. Each time ends with the sight of the bayechnik at the foot of the bed. If lucky, the teller may be encouraged to remember or tell a true account of events. If the teller has no idea their story is incorrect, they will be trapped in the cycle until dead. If anyone stays awake that night, the bayenchik may attack him or her as well, with a hit causing deep fatigue in the form of Strength damage. They may also use the spells sleep and phantasmal force at will, if someone resists them.
