Accursed Thieves

These creatures are created when a mortal person dies after being subjected to a powerful curse, usually one placed on a sacred site or tomb. Most Accursed Thieves were thieves and grave robbers in life, or those they infected afterwards. They appear to be walking corpses very similar to a standard zombie, but a bit more driving and intelligent. Their open wounds teem with maggots. Worms wriggle under their skins, behind their pale eyes, and drip from their open moaning mouths.

Accursed Thieves attack like a zombie, using their hands to claw, their mouths to bite. Sometimes these creatures (40%) employ a simple melee weapons they might have used in life. Much like zombies they are immune to any attacks that don’t specifically target their heads (1 penalty dice to attack rolls). The big difference comes when these creatures are attacked.

For each attack landing on them, whether it targeted their heads or not, causes maggots to fly from their bodies within a 5-foot radius. Anyone within this sphere must make a Luck check or be showered by one or more of these maggots, who quickly burrow into the victim’s skin. This should be considered a Moderate Attack on the Other Forms of Damage table (see page 124 of the Call of Cthulhu Keeper’s Rulebook). This causes an additional 1D6 points of damage, which can be halved with a successful CON check. Those killed by this damage will rise up within 3D4 hours as an Accursed Thief unless their bodies are destroyed or their brain’s destroyed.

Accursed Thieves can be dispatched like a standard zombie, by inflicting enough damage with called shots targeting their heads. However, on the round following this they begin swelling up alarmingly, exploding in a spray of gore the next round. From the shattered corpse comes pouring a swarm of dangerous insects, like biting flies, centipedes, roaches, or carrion beetles. These then attack any living creature within reach, and keepers should use stats for a Rat swarm for this encounter (see page 138 on the Call of Cthulhu Keeper’s Rulebook). In addition to this anyone witnessing this must make a Sanity Check for 1/1D4. Any who die from such damage suffered from this swarm of insects also rises as an Accursed Thief, within 3D6, hours unless their bodies are destroyed or their brain’s destroyed.
