The Scribe Vampires of the Monkey Head Nebula (NGC 2174)

John had been trapped in the lab with that thing. Security unlocked the lab and was attacked by what looked like a mound of translucent-opaque gelatinous agony festering in what was John’s lab coat and pants. The creature with John was nowhere to be found. After the other thing in the room was put down, the scientists speculated that it was the remains of our friend John, who had transformed into some sort of proto-creature. His cells had been reduced to a smaller genetic code. He had recorded a brief voice mail to an associate saying, ‘it needs to finish the story….’

Scribe Vampires come from the Monkey Head Nebula (NGC 2174) and usually only encounter cultists, crazed sorcerers, or the rare occult-oriented scientist that foolishly summon them. The attraction is that these creatures are believed to have recorded forbidden lore and are willing to negotiate with anyone—for a price. That price is for the ink upon which they write. The ink is the genetic material, DNA and RNA components, that all creatures on Earth have. A Scribe Vampire has no reservation about just taking what it needs and leaving the victim in a de-evolved primordial state. It forcibly drains the material directly, with its gossamer pseudopods, as it transforms the victim into the state that fits the genetic code left behind.

The Obelisk of Teg Suturloc

“Sometimes in Archaeology you come across something that is just a foot note of a footnote with no actual description, just an amorphous understanding that something exists or existed. That is the Teg Suturloc. An old book of mystic or occult revelations from John Dee talked about a scroll that was lost in the fires at the Ancient Library of Alexandria and how it detailed the Teg Suturloc. I don’t know if it was a place or thing or person. I don’t even know if the name is correct because the text was smeared and damaged. It strikes me curious, though.”

-Dr. Michael Lorraine, recorded quote from Miskatonic University Emetrius professor of Archaelogy, just months before he went missing on expedition in a remote area of Asia.

Lotus Eaters (Lotophagi)

The fog broke and the captain saw the island covered by rows and rows of lotus flowers. In the far distant hill overlooking the ocean the captain could see the people of the island picking the lotus to eat. A crude carving of their hideous God sat in the middle of their harvesting. The hungry men on the ship jumped for joy as they saw the sight. Bitterly the captain warned his men, “Not here! This is the land of the lotus-eaters… Go to shore and we will never leave.”

The Alienist showed his intern a box on his table. It was a small brown wood box with iron hinges. Most peculiar was the strange glyphs in gold decorating the box. The Alienist spoke cautiously, “Back in the day there was some of us who were neophytes under the teachings of the famous psychoanalyst, doctor Carl Jung , who found a path to our patient’s dreams. We had great success bringing the unconscious material to the surface to help our patients merge themselves with their unconscious self. To be a whole person, you see. Doctor Jung didn’t understand how we could cure our people so quickly. It was our secret. We continued for a year or two but we eventually came across a patient named Ichabod Marsh. His shadow tapped into something more primal than any archetype we had seen. It was ancient and it devoured Ichabod’s ego and essence. What was left is in the box…Captured and hungry.”

The curious intern impulsively replied, “Let me see?” Continue reading »

The Unspoken Silence

“What happened to Citizen Felix?” The commander asked his men on patrol, “He was the only one to come back from that mountain excursion. I wanted to ask him more questions about what he saw and what became of the people that had wandered out there with him. He mentioned something about a monument or giant stone with a forgotten language carved on it.” His men reported that the man was found dead yesterday with his eyes gouged out with his lips sewn together. “Great Gods! Did anyone find the culprits?” His men shook their heads sadly. A Senator from the capitol had been listening to the conversation and spoke. “Best leave such curiosities to the silence and let such misfortune fade from our memory my dear young men.” The commander opened his mouth to say a query but was cut off by the senator’s two fingers over his lips. The rest of the men trembled and looked at each other in fright.

“Silence.” Continue reading »

I guess as an old man I would not be so susceptible to stories about the boogey man or monsters under my bed. But let me tell you, I had heard a whopper from Margaret the other night that is something that I cannot let go. It chills me thinking about it now. She told me that there was this guy named the Lantern Man that came to visit her in her dreams the other night and that he had told her that he wants my head so he could…how do I say….experience…no taste  my life.  I don’t know exactly what she meant but I have a good idea. You see only her head had come to visit me last night *Pulls out severed head*.”
