Octobernomicon, Oct 8: Old Hags

Old Hags, Lesser Indepedent Race

Folklore says terrible old hags are responsible for the phenomena of night-terrors, a frightening experience where one wakes up in the middle of the night, to find paralyzed, and unable to breath with a crushing weight on their chest. Science has since explained the nature of this phenomena — the body waking during paralysis caused by REM sleep. While this is true in most cases, some night-terrors are indeed caused by encounters with the wraith-like beings. Belief in the Old Hags may be waning, but they have not forgotten us.
Old Hags attacks as a normal wraith, but target the victim’s POW, and only attack the sleeping. During these attacks, the victim will awaken momentarily, finding the old hag sitting upon his chest, causing a sensation of suffocation. The victim is unable to move or call out as his eyes freeze on the old hag’s horrid visage, and it stares back at him with bloodshot eyes and mockingly amused grin. Victims fall back to sleep, and in the morning generally write off the experience as a horrible dream. They awake feeling drained and fatigued.

Old Hags only attack once per night. Often they will attack a victim just one time, and move on to the next. On rare occasions, those suffering from emotional trauma will find themselves attacked night after night.
