General

Octobernomicon is our yearly frenzy of monsters & creatures you can use in your games. They are taken from pulp culture, folklore, urban myth, or simply just made up.  We try to get at least one new beastie per day.  To facilitate this; we run a large contest for artists & game writers.

Here are the official rules of the OctoberNomicon Contest!  All the details are worked out, the T’s dotted and the I’s crossed. The contest runs until October 30th, although admittedly the earlier & more often you enter, the better your chances of getting illustration, and the better your chances of winning.  If any other companies are reading this, and would also like to contribute, please contact us immediately and we will get you credited here!  Remember, to compete you have to create an account on Shoggoth.net!

Writing Submission Guide

Entries should be at least 250 words, and start with a paragraph or so of what we affectionally refer to as “flavor text”. Flavor text should consist of a quote from someone who’s encountered the creature, or something out of context concerning the beast.  The entry must contain the name of the creature, flavor text, body text telling us about the history, attack style, culture and any other pertinent information about the creature. It must also contain a paragraph or so, that is not counted against your word count, to give a physical description to the artist illustrating your piece.  Try to be as helpful as possibly, as good art can really help your chances of winning beyond the imaginativeness of your submission. If you are interested in competing, claim your horrible monster by mailing the following to [email protected]:

  • Author: Your name
  • Beastie: It’s name
  • Description for Artist: A short paragraph describing it for the artist
  • Definitions: A short paragraph telling the rest of us what you’re up to so two folks don’t cover the same angle.

Art Submission Guide

The art contest is slightly different, in that you have to ask (by mailing us) to participate. UPDATE: Any entry displaying the Enter the Contest graphic is fair game. Simply email your submission to us at [email protected].  You still have the option of requesting the monster list though.  All art contest contestants will receive a list of submitted monsters containing it’s name as well as it’s general description for the artist. You should submit your name, your website (your profile on Shoggoth.net can be used in the interim), and any other attribution information.  All art posted on Shoggoth.net has to meet by our Image Hosting Guidelines.

Winning!

Animated Image is Charlie Sheen in a manic rant with the text "WINNING" above him.

This man is winning, and you can too.

All winners are decided via a vote. All users on shoggoth.net can sign up and vote for the best monsters, with the voting stopping on November 1st. Users are encouraged to vote for multiple entries.

Submitting Content

All submissions should be emailed to [email protected].

  2. *ANYTHING* we want?
Nothing above a PG-13, nothing with a political agenda please.

Sure, just imagine generating some description for the artist along with anything you see here.
